Budget for the VPS plan plus its outbound data transfer—not just the advertised monthly server price. As a 2026 DigitalOcean example, Basic Droplets start at $4 per month, but that smallest example includes only 500 GiB of transfer. At YouTube’s recommended 6 Mbps for 720p30, one continuous stream sends about 1,944 decimal GB (roughly 1,810 GiB) in 30 days before overhead. A $12 example plan includes 2,000 GiB, making it a plausible fit at that bitrate but with little headroom. Encoding workload, actual bitrate, region, taxes, backups, and overage can all change the final bill.
What does a 24/7 VPS stream cost?
There is no single all-in price: the main variables are the VPS configuration, whether it encodes or merely relays media, and how much outbound transfer your stream uses. DigitalOcean’s listed Basic Droplet examples, accessed October 3, 2026, show the following base prices and included resources:

These are provider price and configuration examples, not proof that a particular plan can encode your video reliably. The $4 and $6 transfer allowances are below the estimated monthly output for a continuous 6 Mbps stream. The $12 example is closer, but its 2,000 GiB allowance leaves limited room for overhead or bitrate variation. DigitalOcean’s published examples do not establish a universal CPU or RAM minimum for FFmpeg or another encoder.
DigitalOcean says transfer allowances are pooled at team level, inbound Droplet transfer is free, and additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01/GiB, according to its documentation last verified September 14, 2026. Check the provider’s billing units and current plan details before estimating your bill. Taxes, optional backups, additional storage, and other services may add charges; DigitalOcean lists weekly backups at 20% of the Droplet price.

How much bandwidth does a 24/7 stream use?
For a steady stream, a useful estimate is bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 = decimal GB per day. Multiply the daily result by the number of days in your billing period. These 30-day estimates exclude protocol overhead:

GB here is decimal; the approximate GiB conversions divide decimal GB by about 1.074. Actual transfer can be higher because of protocol overhead and bitrate variation, so treat the figures as estimates and check measured traffic.

Match the estimate to your video settings
YouTube’s official live-encoder guidance recommends H.264 and constant bitrate. Its representative recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30; the table also recommends 8 Mbps for 720p60 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Those are ingest recommendations, not VPS sizing advice. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.
At the recommended 6 Mbps, the estimated 30-day output is already about 1,810 GiB before overhead. A 1,000 GiB allowance would be insufficient if all of that traffic counts against it; a 2,000 GiB allowance is a closer fit but not a generous margin. At 10 Mbps, about 3,017 GiB is estimated, above a 2,000 GiB allowance. For an allowance shortfall, estimate overage using the provider’s stated rate or choose a plan with more included transfer.

Does encoding on the VPS change the cost?
Yes. If the VPS encodes source video in real time, CPU capacity and sustained workload matter. If it sends already encoded media without re-encoding, compute demand may differ, though outbound transfer remains tied mainly to the stream bitrate. YouTube’s bitrate guidance does not say how much CPU or memory your particular VPS needs.
There is no established universal minimum CPU or RAM for a 24/7 encoding workload. Size against your actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and source media, then run a sustained test before relying on the server. A plan that looks inexpensive on paper can be a poor choice if it cannot encode your workload consistently.

What automatic restart and monitoring need to cover
A restart policy is only one layer of recovery. Configure the operating system’s service manager or a container policy to start the streaming process after reboot and restart it after a process failure. Then monitor host and process status, and separately check YouTube’s stream health: a process can remain alive while its outgoing feed is unhealthy.
YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Its guidance recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP, for sending a stream to YouTube. A restart cannot fix every failure: an unreadable input file, exhausted transfer allowance, invalid stream key, provider outage, or YouTube ingest problem may require a different response. YouTube’s official encoder guidance covers stream health and troubleshooting messages.

- Use a boot-enabled service or container restart policy for process failures.
- Alert on host availability and whether the encoder process is running.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health status rather than treating a live process as proof of a healthy broadcast.
- Test the chosen video and settings for a sustained period before depending on the setup.

Hetzner CX22: historical price, not a current quote
Hetzner’s June 6, 2024 announcement listed the CX22 with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB disk, and 20 TB traffic at €3.79 per month excluding VAT at that time. That is a historical price, not a current offer; check the present price, region, and transfer terms. The figures are not directly comparable with DigitalOcean’s current listed examples without accounting for date, tax, configuration, and billing terms.

Estimate your own total before going live
- Choose your output settings. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate, then use YouTube’s recommendations as an ingest starting point rather than a server-performance guarantee.
- Estimate monthly transfer. Multiply bitrate in Mbps by 10.8 for approximate decimal GB per day, then multiply by days in your billing period. Add headroom for overhead and variation.
- Compare transfer with the plan allowance. Confirm whether allowance is pooled, how overage is billed, and whether the provider’s units are GB or GiB.
- Choose compute based on the media path. Determine whether the VPS must encode or can relay already encoded media; test the actual workload rather than assuming a published bitrate implies a CPU requirement.
- Add operational costs. Account for tax, backups, storage, monitoring or alerting, and any transfer overage.
- Test recovery and stream health. Verify that the process starts after reboot, restarts after failure, and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
Common cost and reliability mistakes
- Budgeting only for the VPS: compare monthly transfer needs with included outbound capacity and calculate any likely overage.
- Using the wrong units: the examples above distinguish decimal GB from GiB; confirm which unit your provider uses.
- Assuming bitrate determines CPU needs: bitrate recommendations describe YouTube ingest settings, not encoding performance on a specific server.
- Monitoring only the process: a running encoder can still send an unhealthy feed, so check YouTube stream health as well.
- Expecting restart to solve every interruption: investigate input, key, provider, transfer, or YouTube issues when restarting does not restore a healthy stream.
