To loop a church’s recorded Advent readings on YouTube Live, play the recording through OBS Studio, enable Loop on its Media Source, and send OBS to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. For several recordings, use OBS’s VLC Video source with a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. Test the broadcast and confirm content rights before the service.
Before you set up the broadcast
Check channel access and activation time
The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the scheduled broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Prepare the recording and confirm permissions
Choose the finished video or readings you intend to play, and make sure the computer running OBS can access the files. The recording may include material beyond the spoken reading—such as a translation, music, or other third-party content—so check that the church has the necessary rights for everything in the stream. YouTube scans live broadcasts for matches and may replace the live image with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate the stream, or apply a strike. Even licensed content may need the rights holder to add the church channel to its Content ID allowlist. Which permissions apply depends on the particular works, licenses, and church location; there is no universal permission that covers every reading or recording. Choose how to repeat the readings

Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Create the scene: In OBS, select or create the scene intended for the broadcast. Add a Media Source, choose the recording, and turn on Loop in the source properties. For multiple readings, add a VLC Video source, build the playlist in the intended order, and check Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to be available.
- Create or select the YouTube encoder stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Enter the connection details in OBS: Open OBS streaming settings and enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if it may have been exposed.
- Connect and inspect: Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview before you start the broadcast for viewers. Confirm the expected video and audio are present.
Test the stream and plan for reliability
YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Use a representative portion of the recording to check both audio and video movement; inspect the preview, confirm the stream is reachable from the channel or watch page and on mobile devices, and monitor stream health and quality while live. Check upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving around 20% of upload bandwidth available above the total stream bitrate; other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Consult YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current platform guidance.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the church is planning a longer continuous broadcast, do not assume the same archive behavior; confirm YouTube’s current handling or schedule a shorter session. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Common problems and what to check
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check verification and whether a live-streaming restriction occurred in the preceding 90 days. If this is the channel’s first broadcast, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- The file stops instead of repeating: Open the OBS source properties and check Loop for a Media Source. For a playlist, confirm VLC is installed and Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and stream key for the selected encoder stream. If the key may be compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The preview is missing or the stream is unstable: Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, verify the recording plays correctly in OBS, and check the actual outbound upload available to the streaming computer. Leave the recommended headroom and account for other devices using the connection.
- The broadcast is interrupted or replaced with a placeholder: YouTube may have detected third-party material. Review rights for the recording, translation, and music; where the material is licensed, confirm whether the rights holder must allowlist the channel.
