How to Set Up a 24/7 Hindi Music YouTube Stream with Docker Compose

Use Docker Compose and FFmpeg to loop a Hindi music playlist into YouTube Live, with a persistent media mount, RTMPS setup, launch checks, and practical limits.

You can run a continuous Hindi music stream with Docker Compose by keeping your audio files and visual on a host machine, using FFmpeg in a container to loop and encode them, and sending the output to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Docker makes the service repeatable; it does not make the stream outage-proof or grant music rights. Test privately or unlisted first, and only use tracks you are authorized to broadcast.

What you need

The stream has four parts: a Docker Compose service, FFmpeg, a music playlist and visual source, and YouTube Live credentials. Compose starts and monitors the container; FFmpeg reads the media in real time and sends an encoded audio/video stream to YouTube. Your computer, network connection, and storage still need to stay available for as long as you self-host.

  • A machine with Docker Engine and Docker Compose installed, enough storage for your media, and a stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity.
  • Hindi music files you have permission to transmit live, plus any permissions needed for an archive or monetization.
  • A static image or prepared video to provide the visual track.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, and the current stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

This is an example layout, not an official FFmpeg image or a one-size-fits-all command. The exact FFmpeg build, available codecs, ingest URL, and YouTube settings may differ. Check the command against the FFmpeg build you use and the current settings shown for your stream in Live Control Room.

Prepare the media and project files

Make a persistent media directory

Keep your library outside the container so rebuilding or replacing the container does not erase it. For example, create a project directory with this layout:

The sample below mounts media/ and visual/ read-only into the container. Add files to the host folders and update the playlist when you want to change the program.

Create the playlist

For FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, make media/playlist.txt a list of file entries. Use absolute paths inside the container and quote filenames with spaces:

file '/media/track-01.mp3'
file '/media/track-02.mp3'

Check that every listed file exists, is readable, and has a format your FFmpeg build can decode. When the end of the list is reached, the example command loops it from the beginning. A playlist of only a few tracks will therefore repeat frequently; that can also affect how viewers and YouTube assess the originality of the channel.

Add a small Docker image definition

This example builds FFmpeg into a Debian-based image rather than relying on an unofficial prebuilt streaming image. Package availability and image tags can change; rebuild and test it before relying on it.

Keep credentials out of version control

Create .env beside compose.yaml and put your current RTMPS base URL and stream key in it:

YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL=rtmps://paste-the-current-url-from-live-control-room-here
YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY=paste-your-stream-key-here

Those values are examples of variable names, not a real ingest URL or key. Copy the actual RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. Add this to .dockerignore so a future image build does not include the secrets file:

.env

Also exclude .env from Git or any other repository you use. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public Compose file, screenshot, support post, or copied log. A local environment file protects against accidental commits only; anyone with administrative access to the host or Docker environment may still be able to inspect runtime configuration or processes.

Configure the Compose service

Save this as compose.yaml. It builds the image from the Dockerfile, mounts media persistently, and restarts the container if its process exits or Docker restarts. The example sends a 720p, 30 fps video stream with AAC audio. It is a starting configuration, not a YouTube-wide requirement.

Confirm that the URL copied from Live Control Room is the base ingest URL expected by your encoder and that appending the key in this manner matches the current instructions for that URL. Some configurations may present the URL and key differently. Do not assume a static URL copied from a tutorial is current.

What the example settings do

  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the playlist input; -re reads it at real-time speed rather than sending it as fast as the machine can process it.
  • -loop 1 keeps the still image available as a continuous video input. The filter fits it inside a 1280×720 frame and pads any unused area.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac encode video and audio. The example’s 2,500 kb/s video target and 128 kb/s audio target are illustrative settings, not a guarantee of suitability for every connection or YouTube configuration.
  • -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 request a 60-frame keyframe interval at the example’s 30 fps output. Recheck keyframe and bitrate expectations in YouTube’s current encoder guidance if you change the frame rate or quality.
  • The output uses the FLV container over the supplied RTMPS endpoint. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; obtain its current URL from Live Control Room rather than reusing an old tutorial’s address.

If you use a prepared video instead of a still image, replace the image input and review the video mapping, duration, and looping behavior. The command above assumes the playlist supplies an audio stream and the image supplies the video stream. It will fail if those inputs are missing or incompatible.

Enable YouTube Live and get the stream credentials

  1. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel if it is not already enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned launch.
  2. Open the channel’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
  3. In the stream’s encoder settings, reveal and copy the current stream URL and stream key. Prefer the RTMPS URL when available and supported by your FFmpeg build.
  4. Put the URL and key in the local .env file. Keep the key private and confirm it belongs to the stream you intend to use.
  5. If the stream is scheduled, plan to check the preview and use YouTube’s Go live control when the preview is ready. Starting FFmpeg alone does not necessarily make a scheduled broadcast publicly live.

A stream key identifies the encoder connection, not permission to use the music. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. Its guidance says a match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder and prompt you to stop; continued third-party content may interrupt or terminate the stream. For licensed third-party material, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license does not guarantee that a stream will avoid interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.

Validate, launch, and operate the stream

  1. From the project directory, run docker compose config to validate the resolved Compose configuration. Do not paste or publish output that contains credentials.
  2. Start the service in detached mode with docker compose up -d.
  3. Follow the container output with docker compose logs -f hindi-live. Check for FFmpeg errors such as missing files, unsupported codecs, authentication failures, or connection errors. Avoid sharing logs without first checking that they do not expose secrets.
  4. In Live Control Room, verify that YouTube receives the stream and that its preview has audio and video. Before a public launch, run a private or unlisted test and watch it long enough to confirm the playlist advances and loops as expected.
  5. Stop the service with docker compose down. To restart it after a configuration or media change, use docker compose up -d and check the logs and preview again.
  6. When changing FFmpeg or Dockerfile settings, rebuild with docker compose up -d --build, then verify the process and YouTube preview. Keep the host media directories intact when replacing the container.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on one indefinitely running broadcast becoming one complete archive; plan how you will handle archives and long-running sessions.

Rights and monetization are separate from the technical setup

Clear every recording for the intended uses

Before launch, make sure you have the permissions required for live transmission and for any archive or monetization you plan to enable. Keep records of the rights and their scope. Crediting an artist, buying a consumer download, or finding a song already on YouTube does not by itself establish broadcast permission. There is no general Hindi-music blanket license route established here; confirm permissions with the applicable rights holders and ask about Content ID allowlisting before streaming.

Do not assume a live playlist qualifies for monetization

YouTube’s channel monetization policies also apply to live streams. Its rules expect monetized content to be original and authentic, and say mass-produced, generic, or repetitive material may be ineligible. A repeated playlist over an unchanged image can present a monetization risk, even when the music is properly licensed. Going live for many hours or holding a stream key does not guarantee monetization; channel review and YouTube’s other requirements still apply.

Continuity limits and troubleshooting

Compose can restart a container after the process exits, and its logs help diagnose the service. A restart policy is not end-to-end recovery: it cannot fix an invalid key, a rights match, missing or corrupt media, a broken host connection, or a YouTube-side interruption. If the stream runs from a home machine, power, network, and storage reliability remain your responsibility.

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Container exits immediately Missing environment values, bad Compose syntax, unavailable image packages, or a failing FFmpeg command. Run docker compose config, check docker compose logs hindi-live, and confirm the variables are set without printing the key publicly.
FFmpeg cannot open the playlist or a track Wrong host path, filename mismatch, unreadable file, or a playlist entry that does not match the container path. Confirm the file is in the mounted media/ directory and that playlist entries use paths such as /media/track-01.mp3.
FFmpeg reports an invalid input or missing stream The playlist is malformed, a track cannot be decoded, or the chosen visual has no expected video stream. Test the media with the same FFmpeg build, check the playlist formatting, and verify the image or video path and format.
YouTube shows no incoming signal Wrong or stale RTMPS URL, mismatched stream key, network egress issue, or an encoder connection error. Copy the current URL and key again from the correct Live Control Room stream, update local configuration, restart the service, and inspect the new logs.
Preview appears but audio or video is missing Input mapping, codec, or source mismatch; the sample expects playlist audio and image video. Check FFmpeg’s input and mapping errors, confirm both sources are readable, and verify the preview before going public.
Stream stops despite a restart policy The process may have restarted but the underlying issue persists, or YouTube/network interruption is outside Compose’s control. Inspect container logs and Live Control Room status; resolve the actual cause before treating the stream as restored.
Broadcast is replaced or interrupted YouTube may have detected third-party content or another platform-side issue. Review YouTube’s notice, verify the rights and allowlist status with the rights holder, and follow the platform’s instructions before resuming.
Playback stutters or the host struggles Upload capacity, CPU encoding load, storage, or source media problems may be responsible. Check host and network capacity, reduce the example’s output quality if appropriate, and test privately before restoring public service.

Choosing a home machine or a VPS

A home machine avoids choosing and managing a hosted server, but it depends on your local power, internet, and storage. A VPS can keep the workload on a server intended to run continuously, but you must choose and manage the provider, region, media storage, and outbound bandwidth. Compare who patches the host, how files are transferred, what restart and log access you get, and the recurring cost for your actual needs. No particular provider or price is established here, and a VPS does not remove the need to manage the stream or its rights.
