Desktop Streaming

Is It Cheaper to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream With Your Desktop Monitor Off?

A monitor-off setting can trim display power, but the desktop must stay awake to stream. Measure the full setup and use your own electricity rate to estimate cost.

Turning off your monitor can reduce electricity use, but it does not turn off the desktop: the computer must remain awake to encode and send the stream. Whether the saving is meaningful depends on the monitor’s actual power draw, the rest of your setup, and your electricity rate. Measure the whole setup at the wall while it is streaming to get a useful estimate.

What turning off the monitor changes—and what it does not

The monitor and desktop are separate electrical loads. With the display off or in its standby state, the monitor may use less power; meanwhile, the computer still has to run the encoder and transmit the stream. Putting the computer itself to sleep would stop that work, so it is not a way to keep the same desktop stream running.

ENERGY STAR distinguishes computer Off, Sleep, and Idle modes from monitor On, Sleep, and Off modes. Its guidance also says, “A screen saver does not save energy”; some screen savers can keep the CPU from sleeping. A screen saver is not a substitute for turning off or allowing the display to sleep. ENERGY STAR computer guidance

ENERGY STAR’s display criteria set a limit of under 0.5 W for certified displays that offer an Off Mode. That is a certification threshold effective January 28, 2020—not a measurement of your monitor, nor a guarantee that every monitor’s power switch or standby mode draws the same amount. Measure the actual setup before estimating the bill

A desktop’s draw during a YouTube stream depends on its hardware, encoding workload, settings, and attached equipment. The available guidance does not establish a universal wattage for a desktop continuously encoding and uploading a livestream. A plug-in power meter can measure the wall draw of your own setup; include the equipment you want counted, such as peripherals or network gear.

  1. Connect the equipment you want to include to a plug-in meter, following the meter’s instructions. Keep the computer, encoder settings, content, and other equipment consistent for both readings.
  2. Measure average wall watts while the stream is running and the monitor is on. Allow the reading to settle, and record the average over a representative period.
  3. Turn the monitor off, or put it into the exact sleep or standby state you intend to use. Keep the stream running and measure average wall watts again.
  4. Subtract the second reading from the first. The difference estimates the power saved by changing the monitor’s state in this setup; it does not represent the desktop’s total draw.

For a fair comparison, do not add a router or other device to only one reading. A published desktop video-energy study used a Kill-a-Watt meter for wall-power measurements, but its playback tests are not a substitute for measuring your own livestream. ENERGY STAR computer guidance

Calculate energy use and cost

Use the average wall power of the complete setup, not a generic PC specification. Let P be average watts, H the hours of operation, and R your applicable electricity price per kilowatt-hour:

  • Energy (kWh) = P × H ÷ 1,000
  • Estimated energy charge = (P × H ÷ 1,000) × R

For continuous operation across a 365-day year, H is 8,760 hours, so annual energy is P × 8.76 kWh. To estimate the monitor-off saving, use the measured watt difference between the two states as P in the same formula.

This is a calculation, not a quoted electricity rate or observed result. It estimates the energy-price component when one marginal rate is appropriate. Actual bills may also include fixed charges, time-of-use pricing, taxes, or tiered rates. It does not include internet-plan changes, equipment purchase costs, or streaming service fees.

Do encoding settings tell you how much electricity your PC uses?

No. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers stream configuration and quality, not a desktop’s electricity consumption. It says settings depend on the ingestion resolution, frame rate, and codec; it lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends a constant bitrate, and advises testing with representative video and monitoring stream health. Those recommendations help configure and check a stream, but they do not establish how many watts a particular computer will draw. YouTube Live encoder settings

Would another streaming method cost less?

There is no supported like-for-like cost ranking without measuring energy and counting all costs. Compare the same content and stream workload, electricity rate and hours, upfront hardware and replacement costs, recurring service fees, and whether the method sends prerecorded media or a live camera feed. Consider reliability, control, and setup requirements too.

Standalone hardware encoder

YouTube describes encoders as either software applications or standalone hardware. Its hardware encoder listing describes the AJA HELO Plus and says its PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. That establishes an alternative for scheduled prerecorded content, not that it consumes less electricity or costs less overall. YouTube live encoder options

Cloud service for prerecorded video

For a prerecorded-video stream, StreamNeo is #1 among the options described here: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot and a free first day. Your computer does not have to stay on. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera livestreams. See StreamNeo for details.

Or let it run in the cloud

For prerecorded video, the steps are upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home. It plays uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. India-based users can pay with UPI or a card; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free first day.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • The stream stops when you turn off the screen. Check whether you put the computer to sleep instead of turning off only the display. The encoder needs the computer to remain operational.
  • Your electricity estimate seems unusually high or low. Measure wall draw while the actual stream is running; idle specifications or playback-device figures do not establish encoding draw. Check that both readings include the same equipment.
  • You expect the monitor’s certified Off Mode figure to match your reading. The under-0.5 W figure is an ENERGY STAR certification criterion for displays offering Off Mode, not a guarantee about your particular monitor or its standby state.
  • You change resolution or bitrate expecting a known power saving. YouTube’s encoding guidance does not quantify the resulting PC wattage. Measure the real workload after changing settings.
  • Your stream has health or connection problems. Follow YouTube’s encoder guidance: test using representative video, use the recommended constant-bitrate approach, and monitor stream health. This addresses streaming behavior, not a guaranteed reduction in power draw.

Evidence that should not be mistaken for a desktop estimate

ENERGY STAR cites potential savings of $15 per year from enabling power management on an ENERGY STAR-certified desktop. That is general guidance, not the saving from switching off a monitor during a continuous stream. Likewise, an NRDC report hosted by IEA 4E uses a seven-hours-on/17-hours-in-standby daily assumption for the consumer streaming devices it studies; those figures concern playback devices, not a desktop encoding and uploading a livestream.
