First identify whether you mean a gap inside one archived replay, time between two separate VODs, or a pause while seeking through a stream that is still live. Those are different situations, and YouTube’s published guidance does not document a standard “delay between VOD segments.”
First, identify what “between VOD segments” means
- A pause inside one archived replay: The video stops or goes blank at a point in a single published livestream recording.
- A gap between separate VODs: One livestream recording ends and another begins later in the channel’s videos. This is a gap between uploads, not necessarily a pause within one video.
- A pause or jump while watching live: You are watching the active stream and using pause, rewind, or seek. This involves YouTube’s live DVR feature, not replay playback.
Check the video’s progress bar and watch page: if the replay has one continuous timeline, note the timestamp where playback pauses. If the channel has separate video entries, note each entry’s title and upload time. If the stream is still live, treat it as a DVR or live playback issue.
Live latency is not the same as a VOD gap
YouTube defines stream latency as the time between a camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. That is a live-stream delay, not a measure of how quickly a published replay resumes between sections. YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than 10 seconds of latency on low-latency streams and less than 5 seconds on ultra-low-latency streams; these are typical live-viewing figures, not a promised VOD playback interval. YouTube’s latency guidance explains that lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer and can mean more buffering. Network congestion can also interrupt playback even when a connection can sustain the stream’s average bitrate.
The creator-side latency setting is intended to balance audience interaction and buffering during a live broadcast. It is not an established fix for a pause inside an already published gaming replay. Likewise, the fact that a livestream is delivered in segments does not establish that those segments cause a visible gap in its VOD.

If the pause happens while watching the stream live
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. Its capabilities may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours; limits can be lower on Apple TV, with AirPlay, or in older app versions. When DVR is disabled, you cannot seek back during the live broadcast, but a recording may still be available afterward. See YouTube’s DVR instructions.
- Confirm that the channel is still live and that you are not watching its archived recording.
- Try pausing and resuming, then seek to a different point. If DVR controls are missing or seeking is limited, check whether the stream is unusually long and whether your app or device is supported and up to date.
- Compare with the replay after the stream ends, if one becomes available. A live seek limitation and an archive playback pause are separate symptoms.
If the pause happens in an archived gaming replay
Test whether the issue follows your device or connection
- Play the same timestamp on another supported device, or switch between the YouTube app and youtube.com.
- Try another internet connection if available. If the replay works elsewhere, the issue may be specific to the original network, app, or device; this test does not by itself identify the cause.
- For the YouTube app, clear its cache. Restart or update the device, then try the same point again. YouTube also recommends testing another supported device when playback trouble continues. See Google’s video troubleshooting steps.
For the channel owner, compare the replay with a local recording
YouTube says livestreams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so YouTube recommends keeping a local backup. These are archive-capture limits; they do not establish a typical processing time or explain a long pause inside a particular replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- If you recorded locally, check whether the same timestamp has a pause or missing footage in that file.
- If the local file plays continuously but the YouTube replay does not, that narrows the difference to the uploaded replay or its playback path; it still does not establish a specific YouTube cause.
- For future broadcasts, YouTube’s creator tips recommend checking that the local archive file is growing, verifying the file’s integrity, confirming the event is accessible through channel/watch pages and mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video quality. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Why HLS segments do not prove the cause
YouTube’s HLS setup documentation says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. For HLS, the documented segment duration is 1–4 seconds; shorter segments mean lower latency. Those figures describe live ingest and latency. They do not show that this gaming stream used HLS, or that HLS creates a long pause between sections of an archived VOD. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
YouTube’s published guidance covers live latency, DVR, archive capture, HLS ingest, and general playback troubleshooting. It does not specify a standard duration for replay availability or document a general “long delay between VOD segments” behavior. Without the affected video, the point where the pause occurs, and tests across devices or connections, the cause cannot be established. Avoid changing live latency settings as a presumed fix for an archived replay, and do not assume that HLS segmentation or a viewer’s connection is responsible without a comparison that supports it.
