There is no fixed electricity cost for running a YouTube stream 24/7, and adding channels does not create a predictable charge per channel. Measure the average wall power of the equipment that will actually stay on, multiply it by the hours it runs, then multiply by your electricity rate. Multiple independent feeds can also increase upload and encoding demands, which should be assessed separately from electricity.
What changes when you stream to one channel or several?
One continuous feed on one channel
A single continuous feed generally means one configured outgoing feed. Its electricity cost depends on the complete equipment setup and workload—not simply on the fact that the stream is live.
Independent feeds for multiple channels
YouTube’s Live Streaming API guidance calls for a different stream for each channel. If you send separate feeds, plan for each output’s upload bitrate and measure the PC and related equipment while handling the intended workload. The extra electricity depends on your hardware and workflow; there is no established fixed cost per additional channel.
One source attached to multiple broadcasts on the same channel
YouTube also documents binding one stream to multiple simultaneous broadcasts on the same channel when they carry the same underlying source content—for example, a continuous feed and an interview that is a subset of it. That specific API use case is not evidence that unrelated feeds to different channels require no extra encoding or network capacity. See YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide.

Calculate the electricity cost from measured power
Use this formula:
energy cost = (average wall watts ÷ 1,000) × operating hours × electricity price per kWh
Watts describe power at a point in time; kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy over time. Utilities generally bill electricity in kWh, as explained by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. A 365-day year has 8,760 hours of continuous operation. Use the rate on your own bill or tariff; fixed charges, taxes, demand charges, and time-of-use rates can make your total bill differ from this energy-only estimate.

Measure the equipment that stays powered
- Define the measurement boundary: include the PC and any separate encoder, router or other network equipment, or display only if it will remain powered during the stream.
- Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor or watt meter to measure wall draw while the equipment runs the actual streaming workload. It is an optional measurement tool, not a streaming requirement.
- Repeat the measurement for each configuration you want to compare—for example, one output and several independent outputs—and use the same boundary and workload assumptions where possible.
- Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000, multiply by the hours operated, then multiply by your applicable price per kWh.
Do not substitute a power supply’s rated capacity or a processor’s thermal design power for measured system draw. Neither tells you what the complete setup is drawing from the wall during your stream.
Illustrative calculation, not a typical-PC estimate
At an assumed constant 100 W for 730 hours, a setup uses 73 kWh. At an assumed rate of $0.15 per kWh, that is $10.95 in energy charges for the period. Both inputs are examples, not typical streaming-PC measurements or a forecast of your bill. Replace them with your measured average watts and local rate.

Account for upload capacity separately from electricity
YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are encoder recommendations, not estimates of power use. For multiple independent outputs, add the configured feed bitrates to estimate aggregate upload demand, then leave practical headroom for connection variation. The sum is planning arithmetic based on your settings, not a guarantee about the capacity of a particular internet connection.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes a submitted live stream into different output formats for viewers. You therefore do not need to assume that your PC must send a separate bitrate ladder for every viewer resolution. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Encoding workload depends on the actual outputs
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among encoder options, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The codec, resolution, frame rate, number of simultaneous independent outputs, and hardware all affect the encoding task. YouTube’s bitrate guidance does not establish a universal CPU/GPU requirement or wattage for each concurrent feed.

- Electricity: What average wall watts did the equipment draw, for how long, and at what tariff?
- Upload: What is the sum of the independent outgoing feed bitrates, with connection headroom?
- Encoding: How many independent outputs are being encoded, at what codec, resolution, and frame rate, and can the hardware sustain them?
- Equipment and operations: Which devices remain powered, and does the setup rely on a local PC and connection staying online?
