To reduce dropped frames, first capture a performance trace while the animated story is stuttering, then fix the bottleneck the trace reveals. Schedule JavaScript animation with requestAnimationFrame(), account for hidden-tab throttling, and move canvas rendering to a worker only when main-thread work is the problem. Recheck frame timing, visual output, resource use, and long-run behavior on the browsers and devices that will actually run the stream.
What causes dropped frames in an animated story stream?
A frame can be late because the browser has too much work to do before it can present the next image. That work may be on the main thread, in rasterization, or in GPU activity; low frame rate alone does not identify which. A stream that becomes choppy after running for a while may also behave differently because of its target device, browser, display refresh rate, or whether its page is visible. Diagnose the workload during the stutter rather than assuming a faster GPU, a different animation API, or a code rewrite will solve it.
Chrome’s performance tools expose frame outcomes alongside main-thread, GPU, raster, and animation activity. Use those views to narrow the cause before changing implementation (Chrome DevTools: Analyze runtime performance; Performance features reference).
How to find the bottleneck
- Reproduce the issue. Run the representative story sequence on the intended device and browser. Record when the stutter starts and whether it occurs only in a hidden tab, during a particular animation, or after extended runtime.
- Capture a Chrome DevTools Performance recording while it happens. Inspect the FPS chart and Frames section for low-rate periods, partially presented frames, and dropped frames. Chrome describes a dropped frame as one it cannot render in reasonable time.
- Follow the work in the trace. Look at main-thread activity and animation tracks, then check GPU and raster activity. A busy main thread points toward JavaScript or other main-thread work; GPU or raster activity may point elsewhere. Treat these as diagnostic clues, not proof that a hardware upgrade is needed.
- Save a baseline. Note frame duration and the frequency and severity of dropped or partially presented frames, plus main-thread time and CPU load. If the trace implicates GPU or raster work, include those observations too. Record visual fidelity, animation timing, memory, and power behavior for the same sequence.
- Change one thing at a time and record again. Compare the new trace with the baseline under the same representative workload. Check that the animation still looks and behaves as intended, and repeat on the deployment browser and device matrix.
DevTools can show where time is being spent; it cannot guarantee a specific frame rate for this particular stream. See Chrome’s runtime performance guide and its performance reference for interpreting the recording.

Schedule JavaScript animation with the browser
For JavaScript-driven animation, use requestAnimationFrame() rather than a fixed-rate timer as the repaint scheduler. The browser calls the requested callback before repaint, and the request is one-shot: the callback must request another frame to continue the loop. Use the callback timestamp or elapsed time to advance the story so motion follows elapsed time rather than assuming every display refreshes at 60 Hz.
let previousTime;
function animate(timestamp) {
if (previousTime !== undefined) {
const elapsed = timestamp - previousTime;
updateStory(elapsed);
}
renderStory();
previousTime = timestamp;
requestAnimationFrame(animate);
}
requestAnimationFrame(animate);
This is a scheduling pattern, not a performance guarantee: expensive work inside updateStory or renderStory can still make frames late. Callback frequency generally follows the display refresh rate. MDN lists 60, 75, 120, and 144 Hz as common examples, not required targets or success thresholds. Timestamp-based progress helps prevent the animation from running faster on a higher-refresh display (MDN: requestAnimationFrame()).

Handle hidden tabs deliberately
Most browsers pause requestAnimationFrame() callbacks in background tabs and hidden iframes. An always-on requirement for a product does not mean the browser will render a hidden page at foreground cadence. Decide what the story should do when its document is hidden: pause rendering or other work that does not need to continue, then resume according to the product’s intended timing behavior.
Listen for the visibilitychange event and check document.hidden or document.visibilityState to detect the transition. If the story must remain synchronized to elapsed time while hidden, account for the time away when resuming rather than expecting background callbacks to provide a continuous animation clock. The correct behavior depends on the story’s requirements (MDN: Page Visibility API; MDN: requestAnimationFrame()).

When moving canvas rendering to a worker can help
If profiling shows canvas work blocking other main-thread tasks, consider transferring the canvas to an OffscreenCanvas and rendering in a worker. This separates the DOM canvas element from the Canvas API and permits rendering operations in a worker context. It may help with main-thread contention, but it is not a general fix for GPU-bound work, excessive drawing, or a different bottleneck.
Before adopting it, verify support in every browser and device the stream must run on, and measure the same workload before and after the change. Check frame timing, CPU and GPU or raster activity where relevant, visual fidelity, memory, and long-run behavior. MDN documents OffscreenCanvas and its browser support details.

Choose animation techniques based on the trace
There is no universally best choice among CSS animation, JavaScript with requestAnimationFrame(), canvas, or worker rendering for every animated story. Match the technique to the work and required visual behavior you measured.
- For suitable effects, simple CSS transforms and opacity can be efficient because browsers may offload them to the compositor. Confirm the actual result with profiling.
- Do not add layers or GPU hints indiscriminately. Layer promotion can consume memory, and the benefit depends on the animation and browser.
- For canvas, consider worker rendering only if the trace indicates main-thread contention and your target browsers support the approach.
- For any change, compare frame outcomes, main-thread time, relevant GPU or raster activity, visual timing, memory, and power on the intended deployment matrix.
These trade-offs are described in MDN’s guide to CSS and JavaScript animation performance, last modified November 7, 2025.

Why an animated stream may stutter after running for a while
When the issue appears only after extended runtime, capture a trace at that point instead of relying on a short startup test. Compare it with a recording from the same story sequence before the problem appears. Check whether frame outcomes worsen alongside main-thread time, CPU load, GPU or raster activity, or memory use. Also note whether the page has become hidden or the browser and display conditions have changed. The evidence does not establish a universal cause or a guaranteed frame-rate outcome for long-running animated streams; the trace and target-device checks determine which change is appropriate.
