Use VLC to organize and play the podcast files, but use OBS Studio to send the continuous broadcast to YouTube. In OBS, add a VLC Video source, load the episodes in order, turn on Loop Playlist, and connect OBS to your YouTube Live event with its server URL and stream key. VLC’s documented playlist-broadcast example sends video over HTTP to local-network receivers; it is not the YouTube encoder setup.

Before you start: confirm the files and rebroadcast rights

Make sure each episode plays on your computer and that you have permission to rebroadcast it publicly. A podcast being available to stream or download does not, by itself, grant permission to rebroadcast it on YouTube. Check rights for the episode, music, artwork, and any other material included in the broadcast; permissions can depend on the work, territory, and agreement.

You will need VLC, OBS Studio, a computer able to run both while encoding, the podcast files stored where the computer can access them, and a reliable internet connection. You do not need a microphone or capture card just to play prerecorded files.

Choose the right VLC and OBS setup

Several episodes: OBS VLC Video source

For a queue of podcast episodes, use OBS’s VLC Video source. It can play a VLC playlist and provides controls for playlist order, looping, and shuffle. VLC must be installed. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC so the programs’ architectures match.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

One episode: OBS Media Source

If you only need to repeat one file, OBS’s Media Source is a simpler alternative: select the file and enable its Loop option. OBS documents support for common local audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, as well as common video containers. Use the VLC Video source when you need a multi-file queue.

Why not use VLC’s VLM example for YouTube?

VLC’s VideoLAN Manager (VLM) documentation shows how to sequence files and broadcast them over HTTP, with a receiving example on a local network. YouTube’s encoder workflow instead uses the event’s server URL and stream key in an encoder such as OBS. Do not treat the documented local HTTP example as a direct YouTube ingest method.

Build and loop the podcast playlist in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and create a scene. In the Scenes panel, add a scene for the continuous broadcast, or select the scene you intend to use.
  2. Add a VLC Video source. In the Sources panel, select +, choose VLC Video, and create a new source. If VLC Video is unavailable, install VLC with the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture as OBS, then reopen OBS.
  3. Add the episode files in playback order. Open the source properties and add the local files to its playlist in the sequence you want listeners to hear them. Keep the files available at those paths for the duration of the stream.
  4. Set repeat and order behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to restart the queue after its last item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if episodes should play in the order you selected. If you want a randomized sequence instead, enable shuffle deliberately and check the result before going live.
  5. Make an audio-first scene watchable. Add a rights-cleared still image, title card, or other visual using an OBS image source. Check that it appears in the preview and that the OBS audio meter responds when an episode plays. A visual is a practical production choice, not a special requirement of the VLC playlist itself.
  6. Check playback before connecting to YouTube. Confirm that the first file starts, audio is audible, and the playlist advances as expected. If a file is missing, moved, unsupported, or silent, correct it before starting the live encoder.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or select the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. For a scheduled stream, use the event you intend to broadcast.
  2. Copy the encoder details. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate service option, and enter the event’s server URL and stream key as required by the available interface.
  3. Protect the stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address. Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on it again.
  4. Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance specifies H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use settings supported by your encoder and follow YouTube’s current live guidance for bitrate and resolution; the appropriate bitrate depends on the chosen video and audio configuration.
  5. Start OBS streaming and inspect the preview. Start the stream from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and then start the event in Live Control Room. Test ahead of the intended broadcast rather than making the first check during the event.

What “continuous” means in this setup

Loop Playlist repeats the media queue; it does not keep the encoder or internet connection alive. In a local OBS workflow, the computer must stay on and running OBS, the source files must remain accessible, and the network must stay available. A computer shutdown, OBS exit, file problem, or connection interruption can stop playback or the YouTube feed. A loop setting is not a promise of uninterrupted uptime.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded podcast recordings without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a live-camera service. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and its first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.

Troubleshooting

OBS does not show VLC Video as a source

Install VLC and restart OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, make sure VLC is also 64-bit; a mismatch can prevent OBS from finding the VLC components it needs.

The playlist does not repeat or plays in the wrong order

Reopen the VLC Video source properties. Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled and, for fixed episode order, Shuffle Playlist is disabled. Check the file list itself to verify the sequence.

The source appears but there is no sound

Confirm the selected episode plays locally, then watch the OBS audio meter while it is playing. Check that the VLC Video source is not muted and that the scene’s audio is routed to the stream mix. If the meter does not move, test another known-good file and verify its path and format.

YouTube shows no preview or reports an unhealthy stream

Check that OBS is streaming to the server URL and stream key for the correct event, then verify the encoder settings against YouTube’s current recommendations. Confirm the local file is playing and the OBS audio meter moves. If you changed the key or event in YouTube Studio, update OBS with the current details.

The broadcast stops when the laptop closes or loses internet

This method runs OBS locally, so keep the computer awake, OBS open, source files accessible, and network connected for the whole broadcast. Playlist looping cannot restore a stopped local encoder or a lost connection.
