Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To start a live stream with AWS Elemental Link, connect and configure the physical Link device, create an Elemental Link input in AWS Elemental MediaLive in the same AWS Region, then attach that input to a MediaLive channel and start the channel when the source is sending video. Link sends a camera or production feed into AWS; MediaLive handles the channel and its output destination.
Before you begin
- Confirm whether your device is Link HD or Link UHD; their supported workflows differ.
- Connect the device to power, an IP network and a live video source over HDMI or 3G-SDI, as supported by the actual unit. Check the AWS Elemental Link documentation for model-specific hardware and network requirements.
- Make sure the device is visible to the AWS account you will use and that your account has the required IAM permissions. A device obtained through an AWS reseller may need to be claimed.
- Choose the AWS Region before creating resources. The device and the relevant MediaLive input and channel must be in the same Region.
Set up the stream through MediaLive
-
Connect and prepare the Link device
Attach the production source and network connection, then power on the device. Have the upstream operator ready to send the intended video feed. The Link hardware is the physical encoder/source; it is distinct from the Link input device interface and the Elemental Link input resource you create in MediaLive.
-
Configure the device in the MediaLive console
Open the Link input device in the MediaLive console and set its descriptive name and input source. Choose SDI or HDMI to match the connected production feed, or use Auto behavior where appropriate. If both connectors may be active, select the intended source rather than relying on an unintended feed being chosen.
The device configuration also offers an optional maximum bitrate. Leave it blank if you want the device to determine a bitrate suited to network conditions between the device and MediaLive. Set a limit only when your production or network requirements call for one.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
-
Create an Elemental Link input
In MediaLive, create an input with type Elemental Link in the same Region as the device. Select the input class and the required device or devices for that class; AWS’s procedure allows one or two devices depending on the input class. The resulting input details show a device identifier and, while video is being pushed, a thumbnail.
-
Attach the input to a channel when the feed is ready
Add the Elemental Link input to the MediaLive channel as you would another channel input. AWS recommends waiting until the upstream operator has powered on the hardware, connected it to the internet and started sending video before attaching it and running the channel. This avoids charges associated with an idle input and a running channel.

Start and verify the channel
Start the MediaLive channel using the controls for your configured workflow. Check the Link thumbnail and device metrics to confirm the expected picture is reaching AWS before investigating downstream output or destination settings. The destination itself requires the appropriate MediaLive output configuration.
Choose the right Link model and workflow
| Device | Documented MediaLive use | MediaConnect flow source |
|---|---|---|
| Link HD | HD or lower; produces the same resolution in HEVC for a MediaLive input. | Not supported. |
| Link UHD | UHD or lower as a MediaLive input. | Supported; AWS lists AVC or HEVC output. |
Check the AWS model and workflow documentation for the precise capabilities of your unit before planning a resolution or signal path. The MediaLive workflow wizard also accepts Link hardware as an input and documents delivery paths that include YouTube, Facebook and Twitch; this does not configure the same downstream destination automatically for every account or event.

When to use Link UHD with MediaConnect
MediaConnect is a separate workflow, not a step required for an ordinary MediaLive channel. It requires Link UHD. AWS’s documented Link-to-MediaConnect flow uses a flow in the same Region, a Zixi push source with AES 128 static-key encryption, and the relevant flow and IAM details. Follow the AWS Link flow instructions for that setup rather than applying those MediaConnect-specific settings to a MediaLive channel.
Troubleshoot common setup issues
- No thumbnail or video: Confirm that the device is powered, online and receiving an active source; check the selected HDMI or SDI input and the device metrics.
- The device does not appear in MediaLive: Verify that it is visible to the intended AWS account, that any reseller-supplied device has been claimed if required, and that your IAM permissions allow device and input configuration.
- Resources do not line up: Confirm the device, Elemental Link input and channel are in the same AWS Region. For MediaConnect, the flow must also be in the same Region as the Link device.
- Wrong source appears: Set the source explicitly to the connected HDMI or SDI feed when both may be active; use Auto only when its behavior suits the event.
- Unexpected charges while waiting: Do not attach the input and run the channel until the operator is ready and video is being sent; AWS specifically warns about charges for an idle input and running channel.
- MediaConnect setup is unavailable: Check the device model. Link HD is not documented as a MediaConnect flow source; Link UHD is the supported variant.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than send a live camera or production feed through AWS, StreamNeo is a different kind of service. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
