How to Stream Prerecorded Lessons 24/7 on YouTube Without Repeated Black Frames

A practical guide to sending prerecorded lessons to YouTube Live around the clock, with encoder settings, playlist preflight checks, and troubleshooting for black frames.

To stream prerecorded lessons on YouTube around the clock, send a continuous video feed from an encoder to YouTube Live. You can run that encoder locally on a computer or use a cloud service. To avoid black frames between lessons, test the playlist handoff in the actual output: YouTube’s encoder guidance covers stream ingestion and health, but does not establish a particular OBS setting as a fix for gaps between media files.

Choose how to keep the stream running

YouTube accepts a live feed from software running on a computer or from standalone hardware. A cloud service is another option for prerecorded 24/7 streams; YouTube’s verified-encoder page lists Gyre in that category. The listing is a vendor listing, not evidence of YouTube ownership, endorsement, or tested performance.

Approach What must stay available Playlist and troubleshooting control Cost and service dependency
Local encoder The computer or hardware encoder, power, software, and internet connection. You operate the encoder and can inspect its configuration. Playlist transitions depend on your software and source setup. Costs depend on your equipment and service choices; the cited YouTube guidance does not give a price.
Cloud encoder The cloud service handles the encoding run; you still depend on the service and its connection to YouTube. Controls and troubleshooting depend on the service. Check that its playlist behavior suits your lessons. Pricing and detailed feature comparisons vary by service and are not established by YouTube’s encoder guide.

Choose local encoding if you need direct control over the encoder and can keep the equipment and network available. Choose a cloud option if keeping a computer running at home is impractical, after confirming how it handles lesson playlists and transitions.

Set up a local YouTube Live encoder

  1. Enable live streaming. Sign in to YouTube and enable live streaming for the channel. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before a scheduled lesson stream. Follow the current workflow in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  2. Prepare the lesson playlist. Put the recordings in the intended order and configure the encoder or playback software to send them as one continuous feed. The exact playlist and loop controls vary by encoder and version; verify how your setup moves from one file to the next rather than assuming a particular transition setting prevents black frames.
  3. Connect the encoder to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. Use YouTube’s setup guide for the current Studio workflow.
  4. Choose an ingest protocol and configure output. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the contribution feed. Set a supported video codec, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Current YouTube RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video at up to 60 fps. For SDR, use Rec. 709. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
  5. Set a bitrate the connection can sustain. YouTube’s published H.264 examples are minimum and recommended bitrates, not guarantees of a stable connection:
H.264 output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 or 720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

Test the upload connection and leave capacity for normal variation rather than setting the encoder to a rate your connection only occasionally reaches. For stereo audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports AAC or MP3 and recommends 44.1 kHz at 128 Kbps.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Run a representative preflight. Test with the same sort of lesson files, audio, motion, and playlist transitions you will use live. Watch the outgoing feed and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages before relying on a long run. YouTube detects incoming encoder settings and transcodes the feed into viewer formats; that does not validate every source-file handoff.
  2. Start the feed and monitor it. Start sending from the encoder, then confirm that YouTube receives the signal and the stream is healthy. A YouTube encoder stream that runs for less than 12 hours is automatically archived after sending stops, according to YouTube’s encoder guidance. This is not a promise that a 24/7 stream will be archived as one complete video.

Diagnose black frames without guessing

First determine whether the interruption is in the incoming stream or only at lesson boundaries. Note the time of a black frame and compare the encoder’s output with the stream shown in YouTube. The distinction matters: a connection problem and a media-source handoff are different failure paths.

Black frames coincide with dropped frames or an unstable connection

In OBS, a rising dropped-frames counter and a yellow or red connection indicator point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check upload stability, compare the configured bitrate with sustainable capacity, and lower it if needed. OBS’s guidance addresses dropped frames from connection problems; that indicator alone does not prove why a frame went black between lesson files. See the OBS Help Portal.

YouTube reports a stream configuration issue

Check Live Control Room stream health and the issue details, then compare the reported problem with your encoder’s codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and other settings. The YouTube Live Streaming API distinguishes health states: good means no warning-or-worse configuration issues, ok means no error-level configuration issues, bad means at least one error-level issue, and noData means YouTube has no health information. The API also exposes configuration issue details; see LiveStreams.

The stream stays healthy but goes black at lesson boundaries

If the encoder connection and YouTube stream health remain normal while black frames occur exactly between files, the cited OBS and YouTube documentation does not identify a universal playlist-transition fix. Inspect the playback source’s loop behavior and the playlist handoff, then reproduce the transition in a controlled test while watching the actual encoder output. Treat any change as a test, not a guaranteed remedy.

When HLS is relevant—and when it is not

HLS is a YouTube ingest option for high-quality or high-resolution streams when higher latency is acceptable. It is not a general-purpose cure for black frames between lesson files. YouTube’s HLS guidance requires an HLS-compliant media playlist and segments, HTTPS, a persistent connection, one encoded stream with muxed audio and video, supported codecs, and a closed GOP. HLS segments are typically one to four seconds and must not exceed five seconds; supported video codecs are H.264 and HEVC, and supported audio is AAC. Because HLS is segment-based, its latency is generally higher than RTMP or WebRTC. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.

Protect the channel and lesson content

Only stream recordings you have the rights and permissions to use. A live format does not remove copyright obligations. Review YouTube’s current live-stream policies and any applicable content licences before scheduling lessons. Also assess whether the channel’s prerecorded programming complies with YouTube’s current monetization policies if monetization matters to you; technical availability of a live encoder is not a guarantee of monetization eligibility.
