Why Is My 24/7 Kids’ YouTube Stream Choppy but the Audio Is Clear?

Choppy video with clear audio can originate in OBS, YouTube ingest, or viewer playback. Use stream-health evidence to identify where it starts before changing settings.

Clear audio with choppy video is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The video may be stuttering before it reaches YouTube, YouTube may be reporting an ingest or encoder problem, or playback may be failing only for some viewers. Check the point where the stutter begins and the actual stream-health signals before changing settings or buying equipment; clear audio alone does not prove the connection is healthy.

First find where the video becomes choppy

Compare the same moment at each stage. These checks help localize the problem; none alone proves a specific cause.

  • OBS preview or local recording: If either is choppy, investigate the computer, source video, and OBS output before focusing on YouTube playback.
  • YouTube Live Control Room: Check stream health messages while the stream is running. A warning can point to bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, codec, or insufficient incoming video.
  • Live player and archive: Compare playback on more than one device and network, then check the archive after YouTube has processed it. Smooth local output with choppy playback points the investigation downstream, but does not distinguish YouTube ingest from a viewer-side problem.
  • One viewer only: If other viewers can watch smoothly, check that viewer’s device, app or browser, and connection rather than changing the encoder first.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement like the intended stream and monitoring stream health during the event. For a 24/7 stream, observe a representative segment rather than relying on a brief test with a static image.

Read the health signals before changing settings

Check OBS statistics

In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator during a stuttering period. A rising dropped-frames count together with a yellow or red connection indicator supports a connection-stability or bitrate-capacity problem. OBS notes that dropped frames can occur when the connection cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; that evidence is more useful than a headline speed-test result.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check YouTube stream health

In YouTube Live Control Room, review the stream-health message that appears during the problem. YouTube’s health documentation names conditions such as bitrateHigh, bitrateLow, frameRateHigh, gopSizeLong, videoCodec, and videoIngestionStarved. The last means YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, so viewers may experience buffering. Audio and video are assessed separately, so clear audio does not rule out a video-specific ingest or configuration issue. YouTube Live Streams health documentation

If there is no encoder or ingest warning but playback still stutters, compare different viewer devices and networks. An encoder warning and a viewer-only playback problem call for different fixes.

Match OBS output to YouTube’s settings

Use the warning, your chosen resolution and frame rate, and the stability of your upload connection together. YouTube’s recommended bitrates are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a stream at another setting must stutter or that a recommended rate will work on an unstable connection.

Output H.264 recommended bitrate AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s listed recommendations for the specified codec, resolution, and frame rate; higher resolution or a different codec may have different recommendations. YouTube recommended live encoder settings

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Rate control: Use CBR, which YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. An overly long interval can cause buffering.
  • Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Do not select 60 fps just because it is available if your source, encoder, or connection cannot sustain it.
  • Codec and protocol: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, and RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols. Use a codec supported by your encoder and check YouTube’s health message if it flags codec configuration.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. A clear audio track does not establish that the video encoder or video ingest is working correctly.

If evidence points to the connection, test it in low-risk steps

  1. Compare the configured bitrate with stable upload capacity. Test upload under conditions similar to the stream; a one-time maximum does not show what the connection can sustain continuously. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when reducing video bitrate. This is OBS troubleshooting guidance, not a universal YouTube target. Lower bitrate can reduce connection-related dropped frames, but it can also reduce image quality.
  2. Try wired networking. If the streaming computer uses Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. OBS says Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. If already wired, check the cable and network path; test with a known-good cable if a fault is plausible rather than assuming new hardware is needed.
  3. Check software and drivers. Temporarily investigate VPNs, firewalls or security software, bundled network-prioritization or optimizer software, and network drivers if they could be affecting the stream. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether the result changed.
  4. Restart network equipment if appropriate. A modem or router issue is one possibility, not a diagnosis. If the problem persists after basic checks, ask your ISP to investigate the connection.
  5. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. OBS can lower bitrate dynamically when the connection cannot keep up. OBS cautions that this does not fix the underlying connection problem and may reduce image quality.
  6. Test another ingest server or streaming service if needed. OBS lists these as ways to help determine whether an issue is service-specific. Keep the test controlled and compare the same source and output settings.

OBS’s troubleshooting guide covers unstable connections, dropped frames, bitrate reduction, dynamic bitrate, and network checks. OBS: Dropped Frames and Network Issues

Keep a 24/7 stream stable without guessing

Change one setting at a time and record the health message, OBS dropped-frame count, selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. That makes it easier to tell whether a change improved the stream or merely coincided with a quieter network period. Avoid replacing a router, encoder, or cable until the diagnostics point to that part of the path.

For a children’s channel, technical smoothness is separate from whether the video and audio are authorized for continuous use.
