If your Restream YouTube stream has no sound, first find where the audio disappears: play the source file, check the encoder’s audio meter, listen to a local recording, inspect YouTube Live Control Room, then test playback on another device. If the source or recording is silent, fix the source or encoder setup. If those have sound, focus on the outgoing audio track, YouTube’s ingestion messages, the connection, or viewer playback.
First, isolate where the sound disappears
“Pre-recorded video” can mean a video uploaded and scheduled through Restream or a media file played through an external encoder. The checks below apply to either workflow, but exact controls differ. Restream’s published no-audio guidance covers encoder streams; it does not establish the current file or scheduling requirements for its separate upload workflow.
- Play the original video file. Confirm its audio is audible in a player, not just that the timeline appears to contain an audio track.
- Check the encoder preview and meter while the video plays. A moving meter indicates that the selected source is producing audio; it does not by itself prove the correct track is being sent to YouTube.
- Make or inspect a local recording. Compare its audio with the live output. Restream recommends checking both the encoder meter and a local recording. Restream: My encoder’s stream has no audio.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Note the event status and any stream-health or audio error messages.
- Test playback somewhere else. Try another browser or device and check whether the issue affects every viewer or only one.
Write down which checks have sound. “Audio works in the recording but not on the live stream” points to a different stage than a silent source file or a muted player.
If the source file or encoder meter is silent
Confirm the source and route
- Play the file in another media player. If it is silent there too, investigate the file or its audio track before changing YouTube settings.
- In the encoder, verify that the file or audio source you intend to use is selected, enabled, and unmuted.
- Confirm the source is routed to the audio track that the encoder sends to the stream. A visible audio source can still be assigned to a different track.
- Watch the meter while the video plays. If it does not move, check the source selection and the operating system’s audio-device visibility or the encoder’s media-source audio settings.
Restream notes that many encoders display an animated meter to show whether sources are picking up and producing sound. If your workflow is Restream’s upload-and-schedule feature rather than an encoder, do not assume these encoder controls apply; first verify the uploaded file itself plays with audio.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the local recording to narrow it down
If the local recording is silent too, concentrate on the source, selected input, mute state, and track routing. If the recording has sound but the stream does not, the source is less likely to be the problem: check which track is sent out and whether YouTube or another destination is muting or rejecting it. Restream says some platforms may mute content after detecting copyright issues; treat that as a possibility only when platform notices or the symptoms support it, not as the default explanation.
If YouTube Live says there is no audio stream
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and read the specific health message. YouTube documents ingestion errors for no audio, multiple audio streams, an unsupported audio codec, and an incorrect sample rate. Its missing-audio guidance notes that some encoders have a checkbox to enable audio and that the stream should supply only one audio stream. See YouTube: Fix streaming issues.

Check the encoder’s audio output settings
Restream’s YouTube setup guide recommends AAC or MP3 audio, 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround, and a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1. These are recommendations in that guide, not a guarantee that every encoder exposes identical controls. Match the settings to the audio format you are actually sending, and avoid sending multiple audio streams. See Restream: How to set up a YouTube stream.
- No audio stream: confirm audio is enabled in the encoder and that the intended source is routed to its outgoing track.
- Multiple audio streams: inspect track or output configuration and send only one audio stream to YouTube.
- Unsupported codec or incorrect sample rate: compare the encoder’s outgoing settings with YouTube’s message and the settings above.
After correcting a setting, allow the stream to update and recheck the Live Control Room status. If the message persists, compare the encoder output and local recording again rather than changing unrelated video settings.

If the encoder and recording sound fine but the live stream does not
Focus on the outgoing path: verify the correct audio track is selected for streaming, confirm the audio is not muted in the encoder or platform, and read YouTube’s ingestion diagnostics. If the encoder preview and local archive both sound healthy, YouTube advises testing the outbound internet connection. A healthy local preview does not prove that the audio reaches YouTube correctly.
For a planned broadcast, YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview before starting and monitoring audio and video during the stream. Its preparation guidance suggests setting up encoders two hours before an event and starting them 15 minutes beforehand; these are planning recommendations, not technical requirements for every workflow. YouTube’s advice is to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” See YouTube: Streaming tips.

If only one viewer or device cannot hear it
If other viewers can hear the stream, check the affected viewer’s YouTube player volume, browser or app audio, device volume, and system sound settings. Restart the browser or device and try another playback route before changing encoder settings.
If desktop playback works but a mobile device does not, mono compatibility or phase may be involved. YouTube documents that stereo audio with poor mono compatibility can be degraded or muted when a mobile device converts it to mono. Check the mix for phase problems rather than treating this as a general YouTube outage. See YouTube: Troubleshoot audio problems.
