The original PC manual describes an altar workflow using a filled soul gem and effects your character knows; a Game8 guide reports a separate Sigil Stone method in Remastered. The altar details below are documented for the original game, while the Sigil Stone route is a secondary guide claim to check in your current game.
What you need to enchant equipment
Not every piece of equipment can be enchanted, and an effect that your character knows may still be incompatible with a particular item. The original PC manual says the altar interface presents eligible items and applicable known effects. For its altar process, you also need a filled soul gem large enough for the enchantment and enough gold to cover the displayed creation cost.
Choose an enchanting route in Remastered

These are distinct routes, not interchangeable descriptions of one confirmed Remastered system. Bethesda’s Getting Started in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered provides general game context, but not an enchanting walkthrough that resolves the differences.
Use the original manual’s altar workflow
If you are using an altar and its options match the manual’s description, follow this sequence. Treat the Arcane University location and Mages Guild rank requirement as legacy-game guidance rather than a confirmed Remastered prerequisite.

- Go to the Altar of Enchanting at the Chironasium in the Arcane University, Imperial City. In the original PC manual, access to the University altars requires the appropriate Mages Guild rank.
- Select an eligible weapon, armor piece, or other item offered by the altar.
- Select a filled soul gem. Check the stored charge shown in the interface and use a gem with enough capacity for the enchantment.
- Choose from effects your character knows that the altar lists as applicable to that item.
- Review the displayed creation cost and confirm only if you have enough gold and want to proceed.
The manual says a constant-effect item’s magnitude is set to the maximum allowed by the soul gem. It does not provide a universal enchantment value or gem ranking for Remastered.
Know what happens after enchanting
In the original PC manual, enchanted weapons and staves draw on charge as they are used and need recharging when that power runs out. Enchanted armor and clothing are described as constant-effect items and do not need recharging. Keep that distinction attached to the manual’s documented system; the available official Remastered material does not confirm whether every item type or behavior is unchanged.

If the enchanting menu freezes
Bethesda Support says an update dated June 11, 2025 resolved an issue that could freeze the enchanting menu. If the menu still freezes, Bethesda recommends fully exiting and restarting the game.
