To run a 24/7 YouTube radio stream through Switchboard Live, enable live streaming on your YouTube channel, connect YouTube as a Switchboard destination, send your encoder feed to Switchboard, verify it in the confidence monitor, and then start the YouTube destination. Before launch, confirm music rights and plan for recordings: YouTube may not archive a stream longer than 12 hours, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond that point.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of launch. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains current requirements.
- A Switchboard Live account and a workflow with a Stream Group for the broadcast.
- An encoder that can send to Switchboard. Switchboard supports software and hardware encoders, so dedicated hardware is optional.
- Permission to transmit every recording and composition in the playlist for the intended territories and uses, including any retained or monetized recording.
Keep the YouTube Studio eligibility screen in view when preparing the launch: platform rules and interface labels can change.
Set up the Switchboard and YouTube connection
1. Create a workflow and Stream Group
- Sign in to Switchboard Live and create or open a workflow.
- Create a Stream Group for the radio broadcast and enter its title and description. The Stream Group holds the broadcast’s destination choices and controls.
See Switchboard Live’s initial setup guide for its workflow and Stream Group setup.
2. Add the YouTube destination
- In the Stream Group, choose the option to add or connect a destination, select YouTube, and authenticate the channel that will host the stream.
- Switchboard says a connected destination can be reused across Stream Groups.
- If you are using a scheduled YouTube event as a custom RTMP destination, copy the event’s YouTube stream URL and key into the matching URL and key fields in Switchboard. Check that the URL and key have not been swapped.
For the connection flow, see Switchboard’s YouTube connection instructions.

Configure the encoder to send to Switchboard
Copy the ingest address and key
Open the Switchboard workflow’s ingest details and copy its Stream URL and Stream Key into the encoder’s server or URL field and stream-key field, respectively. These are Switchboard ingest credentials, not the YouTube event credentials used when configuring a custom RTMP destination inside Switchboard. Keep the key private: someone with it may be able to send a feed to the associated workflow.
Choose an ingest protocol
Switchboard documents RTMP(S) and SRT ingest. Its guide describes RTMP as widely supported and suitable for most users, RTMPS as encrypted RTMP, and SRT as an option for low-latency resilience on unstable networks. Use a protocol supported by both your encoder and the Switchboard ingest setup; the best choice depends on compatibility and network conditions.

Set encoder output
Switchboard’s initial setup recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and 30 or 60 frames per second. Treat these as Switchboard recommendations, not universal settings for every encoder or YouTube profile. Set a resolution and bitrate your source and connection can sustain, and check the applicable YouTube encoder guidance for the stream profile you choose: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Switchboard’s setup guide does not establish one bitrate or resolution for every radio stream. For an audio-led broadcast, choose the video format intentionally—such as a stable still or visual loop—and verify that the encoder’s output matches the destination’s current requirements rather than copying a bitrate intended for a different resolution.

Test the feed, then start YouTube
- Start streaming from the encoder to Switchboard. Sending the feed to Switchboard is a connection test; it does not by itself start the YouTube destination.
- In Switchboard, check that the confidence monitor displays the incoming video and that the status changes to Receiving.
- When the feed is ready, use the destination control to start YouTube.
- Open the destination’s View Stream option and confirm that the intended YouTube page is actually live. Check playback and audio from the viewer’s perspective before leaving the stream unattended.
Plan for a continuous broadcast and recordings
A 24/7 broadcast is an operating plan, not a guarantee that a single YouTube video or archive will remain uninterrupted. The Switchboard setup documentation describes sending and starting a feed, but does not establish an uptime guarantee or a particular automatic-recovery arrangement. Monitor both the incoming feed and destination, and test your actual restart and recovery procedure before relying on it unattended.
YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives at all. It also warns that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If a recording matters, make a local recording or other independent backup and plan to preserve programme segments rather than relying on YouTube to save one continuous 24-hour VOD. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Clear music rights before going live
YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service apply to live streams, but they do not grant you rights to music. Check that your permissions cover the actual recordings and compositions, continuous public transmission, the territories where the stream can be viewed, and any archive or monetization you intend. The required rights depend on the catalogue and licences; do not assume that owning a file or having permission for personal listening also authorizes a live broadcast.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube live is unavailable | Channel verification or eligibility is incomplete, or the channel has a live restriction. | Review the current YouTube live eligibility requirements and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| Switchboard does not receive video | The encoder is using the wrong ingest URL or key, an unsupported protocol, or is not sending. | Copy the workflow’s Switchboard URL and key again into the corresponding encoder fields; confirm protocol compatibility and that the encoder is running. |
| The confidence monitor shows no feed or does not say Receiving | The ingest connection has not been established. | Do not start the YouTube destination yet. Verify encoder output and credentials, then wait until video appears and status shows Receiving. |
| The feed reaches Switchboard but YouTube is not live | The destination has not been started, or the wrong YouTube destination/event was connected. | Start YouTube from the destination control, then use View Stream to inspect the intended page. If using custom RTMP, recheck that the YouTube event URL and key are in their matching fields. |
| Playback stops or becomes unstable | Encoder, network, or destination interruption; the setup guide does not promise automated recovery. | Check the encoder and network, inspect Switchboard’s incoming status and YouTube playback, and follow a recovery procedure you have tested in advance. |
| The full broadcast is missing from archives | YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. | Use an independent local recording or backup and preserve the show in manageable segments. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube stream built from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo offers a different route: upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or its pricing page. Start your free StreamNeo day.
