Measure the average power drawn at the wall by each complete setup while it runs the same stream, then apply your local electricity rate. No controlled Chromebook-versus-desktop test establishes a universal winner or a reliable savings figure.
How to compare the electricity cost
Compare like with like: run the intended YouTube stream on each machine using the same content, stream quality, software or method, and connected equipment. Measure the average wall power of the entire setup over a representative period with a plug-in electricity meter. A processor’s TDP, a charger’s maximum rating, or a brief idle reading is not a substitute for measuring actual streaming use. Include the display, peripherals, and any other equipment that will remain powered for the stream. If one setup uses a monitor while the other does not, either account for that difference or configure both to reflect how you will really operate them.
Calculate the energy charge
Use the same period and electricity tariff for both systems:

Electricity cost = (average wall power in watts ÷ 1,000) × operating hours × electricity price per kWh.
For a monthly estimate, use the hours you expect to run the stream in that month and your local price per kilowatt-hour. This estimates electricity charges only; it does not include hardware purchases, accessories, internet service, or cloud-service fees. Without measurements for the particular devices and your tariff, an exact monthly bill or savings estimate would be guesswork.

What can make the Chromebook cheaper—or not
A Chromebook may use less power than a particular desktop, but that possibility is not a general result for every model or streaming workload. Desktop components, screen size, peripherals, power-management settings, stream processing, and the network setup all affect the wall reading. The available comparison evidence does not provide controlled, continuous-stream power measurements for the two categories.
ENERGY STAR’s computer guidance covers desktops and notebooks and addresses efficiency in multiple modes, including off, sleep, and idle. Its computer specification took effect in October 2025. ENERGY STAR says certified computers “use about 30-40% less energy than standard models,” but that is a general claim about certified computers—not an estimate of Chromebook savings versus a desktop during continuous streaming. Use certification and power-management features as factors when choosing hardware, not as a substitute for measuring your own stream setup. See ENERGY STAR’s computer guidance.

Check that the machine can run the stream reliably
Low power use only helps if the chosen device can produce the stream you need and keep it online. YouTube describes webcam, mobile, and encoder methods; an encoder can be software or a hardware device and supports uses such as screen sharing, gameplay, external audio or video equipment, and more advanced productions. YouTube’s documentation does not establish that every Chromebook model supports every encoder or workflow, so verify compatibility for the specific device and software before relying on it. - Check upload capacity: YouTube advises ensuring total stream bitrate fits available upload bandwidth and leaving headroom above the stream bitrate.
- Use a stable connection: YouTube cautions, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A power-efficient device is not a dependable 24/7 solution if the connection repeatedly drops.
- Test before relying on it: Preview the stream, check that it appears on your channel and watch pages, and monitor audio and video quality. Follow YouTube’s streaming tips.
These checks matter especially for an unattended gaming stream: make sure the selected workflow can handle the intended content, audio, and stream settings, and test the whole system rather than assuming that a device capable of ordinary browsing can also sustain the encoder workload.

Consider whether a local computer is needed at all
If you are streaming a live camera, gameplay session, or produced event, local capture and encoding equipment may be part of the job. For prerecorded video played continuously, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists cloud services for 24/7 streaming without a dedicated PC. A cloud option can remove the always-on computer from the electricity comparison, but its subscription or usage charges and terms must be checked separately; the available evidence does not establish that cloud streaming is cheaper overall.
