The first step is to identify what your VPS is doing. If it uploads a playlist as one live stream to YouTube, reduce the encoded stream’s bitrate carefully, use a more efficient supported codec where possible, and measure outbound traffic during a representative run. If the VPS relays viewer playback instead, the traffic calculation is different. YouTube’s recommended 4K60 ingest rate is 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC and 50 Mbps for H.264—not a guarantee of image quality on every video. YouTube’s current encoder settings are the right starting point.
First, identify which traffic you want to reduce
“Playlist” can describe different setups. Trace the actual path before changing settings:
- VPS uploads a playlist to YouTube: A player or encoder on the VPS reads source files and sends one encoded live stream to YouTube. Its outbound traffic is principally determined by the stream’s encoded bitrate and how long it runs.
- VPS relays a live feed: The VPS receives a feed and sends it onward. It may incur both inbound and outbound traffic, depending on the relay design.
- VPS serves YouTube playback to viewers: This is a proxy or distribution arrangement, not YouTube ingest. The ingest guidance below does not establish its traffic, technical behavior, or legality; measure that setup separately and check the relevant service terms.
The recommendations that follow apply primarily to the first case: a VPS sends one live source stream to YouTube. YouTube says it automatically transcodes the incoming stream into multiple viewer formats, so the VPS does not need to upload a separate rendition for each viewer quality. For HLS ingest, YouTube also specifies one encoded stream and says it ignores master playlists. YouTube’s encoder guide and HLS ingestion guide describe these behaviors.
Set a realistic 4K60 bitrate
YouTube’s encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, gives these minimum and recommended rates for a 4K/2160p stream at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not measurements of your VPS or a promise that every source will look good at the listed rate.

| Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
If you need to retain 4K60, begin with the recommended rate for the codec and protocol you are actually using. To reduce traffic, test a lower bitrate in measured steps, then inspect the image during motion and fine detail and watch YouTube’s stream health. Fast gameplay, camera movement, particle effects, and detailed textures can expose compression artifacts more readily than static scenes. There is no universal lower bitrate that preserves the same quality for every source.
YouTube’s general live encoder guidance lists H.264, HEVC and AV1, with CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). That general codec list does not mean every codec is accepted through every ingest protocol: for HLS, use the narrower requirements in the HLS section below.

Choose the codec your ingest protocol supports
HEVC can reduce the rate needed for comparable quality
Where your encoder and chosen YouTube ingest protocol support it, HEVC is worth evaluating against H.264. YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation says HEVC generally yields 25% to 50% more data compression at the same video quality compared with H.264. That is YouTube’s documented general comparison, not a guaranteed saving for your particular playlist or VPS. Test your actual content before relying on a lower bitrate.
Do not assume AV1 works for HLS
YouTube’s general encoder settings list AV1, but its HLS ingestion guide specifies H.264 or HEVC video. If sending HLS, do not configure AV1 based solely on the general encoder page. Match codec and container to the ingest protocol you selected.

Lower resolution or frame rate if 4K60 is optional
If the audience or content does not require 4K60, reducing resolution or frame rate can cut the recommended bitrate substantially. YouTube lists these recommended rates for 60 fps at lower resolutions:
| Resolution at 60 fps | AV1 or HEVC recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1440p | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1080p | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These values are YouTube guidance, not guaranteed quality targets for every game or recording. Compare the actual output at the intended viewing size: 1080p60 may be a sensible bandwidth trade-off for some footage, while fast movement or small interface text may make the loss more noticeable. If 60 fps is also optional, test a lower frame rate separately rather than assuming a particular rate will suit the content.

Configure HLS correctly if that is your ingest method
HLS uses a media playlist and media segments sent to YouTube’s HLS endpoint. YouTube’s guide specifies the following format requirements:
- Send one encoded stream in an HLS Media Playlist; YouTube ignores Master Playlists.
- Use muxed audio and video in M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, and AAC audio.
- Use a closed GOP and no more than 60 fps.
- Keep media segments at the recommended 1–4 seconds and never exceed five seconds.
The HLS guide says shorter segments can reduce latency, but may increase rebuffering risk and lower encoding efficiency. Segment length is not a bitrate-reduction shortcut: changing it does not by itself lower the encoded video rate. HLS and DASH are segment-based and typically have higher latency than RTMP, according to YouTube’s protocol comparison.

Estimate and measure VPS transfer
Estimate outbound data from bitrate and runtime
For a constant stream rate, a useful estimate is:
Gigabytes transferred ≈ bitrate in Mbps × runtime in hours × 0.45
This is an approximate decimal-GB estimate for one continuous outbound stream. At the recommended 35 Mbps for AV1/HEVC, that is about 15.75 GB per hour; at 50 Mbps for H.264, about 22.5 GB per hour. Actual transfer can differ due to audio, transport overhead, bitrate variation, reconnects, and how the VPS provider accounts for traffic. Treat provider billing counters as authoritative.
Measure the right interface and direction
- Run the playlist for a representative period, including scenes with the most motion and detail.
- Record the VPS network interface’s outbound bytes before and after the run. If the VPS is receiving a relay feed too, record inbound separately.
- Compare the observed average transfer rate with the encoder’s target bitrate and with the VPS provider’s dashboard or billing meter.
- Repeat after each bitrate, codec, resolution, or frame-rate change. Keep enough headroom for observed variability and reconnect behavior; there is no universal headroom percentage established here.
Do not estimate viewer delivery traffic as though it were the same as one VPS-to-YouTube upload. YouTube’s transcoding means viewers receive YouTube’s output formats rather than separate source uploads from your VPS.
Troubleshoot bandwidth and stream quality
- VPS outbound usage is higher than expected: Confirm the encoder is sending only one stream, check whether the playlist restarts or reconnects frequently, and compare interface counters with the provider’s billing interval and definition of transfer.
- The stream buffers or loses connection after reducing bitrate: Check YouTube stream health and the VPS’s sustained upload capacity. Restore the last stable bitrate, then retest more gradually; the minimum listed bitrate is not a guarantee of reliable delivery.
- 4K footage looks blocky during motion: Increase bitrate or test HEVC where supported. If neither fits the transfer budget, compare a lower resolution against the visual requirements rather than forcing 4K at a rate that damages the image.
- HLS ingest rejects the feed: Verify M2TS with muxed audio/video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOP, a single media playlist, and segments within the documented duration limits.
- HLS latency or rebuffering worsens after changing segments: Revisit segment duration within YouTube’s 1–4-second recommendation. Shorter segments can reduce latency but may increase rebuffer risk and reduce encoding efficiency.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube playlist rather than managing a VPS, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price regardless of quality. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
