FFmpeg Playlist Concat for 4K 60fps YouTube Live: Settings and Gap Checks

Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer for sequential YouTube Live playback, but check source compatibility and duration metadata. Configure the output for 4K60 and rehearse joins before streaming.

For a reliable 4K 60fps YouTube Live playlist, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer only when the clips have compatible streams and accurate durations; otherwise decode and re-encode them to a consistent output. Set the encoder for 3840×2160 at 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, then rehearse the joins and confirm YouTube reports a healthy 2160p60 stream. Playlist syntax alone cannot guarantee gapless transitions.

How FFmpeg concat works—and why joins can still glitch

The concat demuxer reads a text list and presents the listed files sequentially as if their packets had been muxed together. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so each file follows the prior one. That is packet-level concatenation, not a repair or normalization step: unlike sources can still produce timestamp issues, gaps, or visible and audible discontinuities. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation says the files need the same streams, codecs, and time base for this workflow.

Before building the playlist, compare each clip’s stream count and ordering, codecs, time bases, dimensions, pixel formats, frame rates, audio layout and sample rate, and timestamps. Unequal audio and video stream lengths may leave gaps. If clips differ in relevant properties, plan to decode and re-encode them to a common format rather than expecting -c copy to make them match.

Build an ffconcat playlist

Save a plain-text file such as playlist.ffconcat. Put the format header exactly on the first line, without leading spaces or a byte-order mark:

Use paths relative to the playlist file or valid absolute paths. Follow FFmpeg’s quoting and escaping rules for filenames containing spaces or special characters; do not assume ordinary shell quoting rules apply inside the list. With the exact header, FFmpeg can recognize the format automatically.

The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1, which rejects unsafe paths and directives. Setting safe=0 allows any filename, so use it only for a playlist you control and have checked. Do not disable this safety check for an untrusted playlist.

Check duration metadata before relying on timestamps

The demuxer calculates the next file’s starting timestamp from the previous file’s duration. Incorrect or unavailable duration metadata can therefore create timestamp jumps or other artifacts at joins. Inspect suspect clips and verify their actual timing before changing the playlist.

A duration directive can override the duration FFmpeg reads for an input, but use it only when you have verified the correct duration against the media timing. An arbitrary value can replace one timestamp problem with another. If audio and video streams within a clip end at different times, investigate that mismatch too; a duration override does not make unequal streams continuous.

Choose between stream copy and re-encoding

Use stream copy only for compatible sources

Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding, but it does not normalize codecs, time bases, frame rates, dimensions, pixel formats, audio layouts, or timestamps. It is appropriate only when the input streams already match and the resulting streams are suitable for the intended output container and YouTube ingest. Verify the output instead of assuming that matching file extensions mean matching streams.

Re-encode when clips differ

When sources are not compatible, decode and encode to a consistent 3840×2160 progressive, 60 fps output. Choose an encoder available in your FFmpeg build and verify it can sustain real-time 4K60 encoding. Software and hardware encoder options have different syntax and performance; there is no single command that is correct for every build, encoder, and source set.

YouTube’s 4K60 live settings

YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 2026, gives the following codec-specific targets for 2160p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your encoder or network can sustain the feed.

Ingest video codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

Set the target for the codec you actually send; do not copy a 1080p or 30 fps example’s bitrate into a 4K60 command. Allow reliable upload headroom above the video bitrate for audio and network variation. The bitrate table is YouTube’s guidance, not a measurement of your connection.

  • Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At 60 fps, two seconds is 120 frames; if your encoder takes GOP length in frames, 120 is the nominal starting point. Check that encoder’s option semantics and actual keyframe cadence, particularly with variable-frame-rate material or scene-cut behavior.
  • Transport: YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
  • Audio: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance allows AAC or MP3; its stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
  • SDR color: YouTube lists Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth in its advanced settings.
  • Latency: YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams, which use normal latency.

These settings are drawn from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings and YouTube Help’s latency guidance. Platform guidance can change; check the current pages when configuring a production stream.

Shape the FFmpeg command around your encoder and stream key

Treat any command as a template, not a universal recipe. First decide whether the sources support packet copy or need normalization, then select an available encoder, set 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use the codec-specific bitrate and CBR, and configure the two-second keyframe interval according to that encoder’s options. Read at real-time speed for a live feed, and send the output to the RTMPS ingest destination and stream key shown in YouTube Studio.

Do not publish or share your stream key. Keep it private as you would a password; anyone with access may be able to send video to your channel. Exact FFmpeg flags depend on the chosen encoder and its build, so consult that encoder’s documentation and inspect the resulting stream rather than assuming a copied command sets every property correctly.

Rehearse the playlist and verify the live output

  1. Inspect representative clips. Check stream properties and duration metadata, especially for files that differ in origin or format.
  2. Prepare and validate the playlist. Confirm its paths, ordering, escaping, and any duration overrides. Use only playlist entries you trust.
  3. Run a representative rehearsal. Include clips with the most motion and the most demanding audio, and watch actual transition points for black frames, timestamp jumps, audio gaps, or overlaps.
  4. Check encoder and network performance. Confirm the selected encoder sustains real-time 4K60 and the connection can reliably upload the chosen bitrate.
  5. Check YouTube Studio’s live control room. Use a private or unlisted rehearsal where appropriate, confirm YouTube detects 2160p60, and monitor stream health before the real event.

YouTube recommends testing with similar motion and audio and monitoring stream health during the event. A 4K stream uses normal latency, not YouTube’s low-latency option.

Troubleshoot common playlist and ingest failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Black frame, pause, or timestamp jump at a clip boundary Inaccurate duration metadata, incompatible stream properties, or timestamp differences Inspect the clips’ streams and timing; verify any duration override. Re-encode sources to a common format if packet concatenation is unsuitable.
Audio gap or audio that ends before the picture Unequal audio and video stream lengths, differing audio layouts or sample rates, or a transition mismatch Compare audio and video durations and audio properties across clips; listen to the transition during a rehearsal. Normalize incompatible sources when needed.
Playlist will not open or a file is missing Wrong relative path, incorrect escaping, or a path rejected by the default safety check Check paths relative to the playlist, filenames, and FFmpeg’s concat escaping rules. Use safe=0 only for a checked playlist you control.
YouTube does not detect 2160p60 or reports an unhealthy stream Output resolution or frame rate differs from target, encoder falls behind, bitrate is unsuitable for the codec, or upload is unstable Inspect the actual encoded output, confirm real-time encoder throughput, select the correct codec-specific target, and test sustained upload performance.
Keyframe timing does not match the intended interval GOP option interpreted differently by the encoder, scene-cut behavior, or variable-frame-rate input Check encoder-specific GOP semantics and inspect actual keyframes. At 60 fps, 120 frames is the nominal two-second interval when GOP length is frame-based.
