The path is: media files on the VPS → encoder loop → secure RTMPS connection → YouTube Live. This guide uses a headless Ubuntu VPS as an example; the commands are a starting pattern, not a guaranteed-uptime setup.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- A VPS you can access over SSH, with enough storage for your media and capacity to run your chosen encoder and send the stream continuously. No universal CPU, RAM, storage, or bandwidth requirement is established; check your provider’s limits and test the workload.
- A playlist of sleep stories and any accompanying sound or visuals that you have the rights to use.
- An encoder such as FFmpeg, which can run without a desktop interface.
YouTube provides a server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. Keep the key private: do not put it in screenshots, public repositories, logs, or commands likely to remain in shell history. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion; confirm your encoder is using the matching ingest URL and settings. See YouTube’s encoder settings and the RTMPS ingestion guide.
Prepare the sleep-story playlist
Check rights and media
Confirm you have permission for every story, narration recording, music bed, sound effect, and visual. You are responsible for the full program, not only the spoken story. The technical setup does not establish whether a repetitive prerecorded format meets YouTube’s current monetization or content-policy requirements; check YouTube’s channel monetization policies and current platform rules before making eligibility assumptions.
Make playback consistent
Test the files in playlist order. Check that they open in your chosen encoder, that transitions do not create unintended gaps or abrupt changes, and that perceived audio levels are reasonably consistent from one story to the next. There is no authoritative sleep-story loudness target established here, so do not treat a particular level as a platform requirement.

Store the media locally on the VPS or in storage mounted for the process, and verify the playlist paths before going live. Consider the total storage required for the files and any space needed for logs or temporary files; available storage depends on your VPS plan.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Select or create the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s steps are documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Store the key securely on the VPS, for example in a file readable only by the account that runs the encoder. Avoid pasting it into public scripts or repository files.
- Choose a modest resolution and frame rate for your visual. A mostly static image may not need a high frame rate, but select a configuration your encoder, VPS connection, and YouTube ingest settings can sustain.
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps among its encoder options. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. Bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate: consult the current values in YouTube’s live encoder settings rather than reusing a universal number.
Run a looping playlist with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is one way to run a file-based playlist on a headless VPS. The exact command depends on your file formats, playlist, codecs, available CPU, bandwidth, and the ingest settings selected in YouTube. The public cooscreations 24/7 YouTube streaming repository illustrates an FFmpeg/VPS/systemd pattern; it is a community example, not an official YouTube requirement or proof of uninterrupted operation.

Use a concat playlist as a starting pattern
For compatible files that should play one after another, create a text file such as /opt/sleepstream/playlist.txt in FFmpeg concat format:

file '/opt/sleepstream/story-03.mp4'Adapt the paths to files that exist on your VPS. Paths containing apostrophes need appropriate escaping. The concat demuxer works best when the files have compatible stream layouts and encoding; mismatched media may need to be normalized or handled with a different playlist method.

Set the video bitrate and output resolution to YouTube’s current table and your measured upload capacity; use a 2-second GOP/keyframe interval at the chosen frame rate (for 30 fps, 60 frames is 2 seconds). Confirm that the output codecs and protocol match the selected ingest mode. The example uses H.264/AAC in an FLV container commonly used with RTMP-style ingestion. Do not assume an H.265 or AV1 configuration will work with every ingest route.
Define YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY through a private environment file or service configuration rather than embedding the secret in a shared script. Restrict access to that configuration. Verify the exact URL format from Live Control Room and your FFmpeg build before starting.
Supervise the encoder process
A VPS can run the encoder as a system service so it can be started after a reboot and monitored with service tools. A systemd unit is one possible approach, but its restart policy and behavior must be configured and tested for your setup. A restarting process does not guarantee an uninterrupted connection or a complete YouTube archive.

sudo systemctl status sleepstream.serviceThe unit file, user, environment-file permissions, working directory, and restart policy need to match your paths and security requirements. Check the encoder logs after launch and confirm that the service is actually sending media; a service marked active is not by itself proof of a healthy YouTube stream.
Test, publish, and monitor
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream if available for your setup. Check YouTube’s preview for picture and sound before making the broadcast public.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators and listen for silence, distortion, missing audio, or broken transitions. Test with representative audio and visuals.
- Measure the VPS’s sustained upload performance and choose a bitrate it can maintain. YouTube advises testing upload capacity and selecting a quality the connection can sustain.
- Once the test is healthy, set the intended visibility and publish from Live Control Room. Keep the control-room page or another monitoring method available.
- Monitor the encoder process, VPS CPU and network use, available storage, service restarts, and YouTube stream health during the broadcast.
For hosting, compare a provider’s sustained egress policy, upload reliability, compute capacity for your encoding mode, storage, network route to YouTube ingestion, support, and cost. No provider benchmark or universal VPS size is established here, so validate the plan against your own stream before depending on it.

A looped FFmpeg input can keep supplying files, and a process supervisor can attempt to restart an encoder after a failure. Those are separate from YouTube’s ingest connection and archive handling: automatic process restart does not prove the feed remained continuous, nor does it guarantee that YouTube retained one complete recording.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A multi-day broadcast should not be assumed to produce one complete archive. If you need a retained recording, plan around that limit and verify the resulting archive in YouTube Studio.
Troubleshooting common VPS stream problems
