The AWS Live Streaming solution is a useful architectural starting point—not a ready-made 4K deployment: its published encoding profiles top out at 1080p. A UHD channel needs a customized MediaLive configuration, verified regional availability and quotas, and a cost estimate based on its actual always-on workload.
What the AWS reference architecture does—and does not—provide
AWS’s Live Streaming solution separates contribution, encoding, packaging, and delivery. Its reference design processes two feeds in parallel through MediaLive, sends adaptive-bitrate output to MediaPackage, and uses CloudFront to distribute playback. It supports HLS, DASH, and CMAF outputs. In the reference implementation, MediaPackage playback requests are authorized through CloudFront using a CDN identifier held in AWS Secrets Manager.
The distinction that matters for UHD is that MediaLive supports UHD encoding, but the solution guide’s published profiles are progressive 30 fps ladders at 540p, 720p, and 1080p. Deploying that solution unchanged does not establish a UHD output. Treat it as a pattern for the surrounding architecture, then build and validate a channel-specific UHD output and any companion renditions.
This design serves viewers through your configured delivery path; it is not, by itself, a YouTube ingest or YouTube Live setup. Define the destination and player experience before choosing the exact packaging and distribution configuration.

Plan the channel before deploying it
Define the contribution feed
Record the upstream feed’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio tracks, captions, and any alternate-language requirements. Choose a MediaLive input type that matches how the source will be delivered. The AWS deployment guide lists URL pull, RTMP pull or push, RTP push, and MediaConnect as input options. Confirm that the selected services and input workflow are available in your intended AWS Region.
Set an availability target
Decide whether the channel requires independent primary and backup contribution paths, redundant processing, or both. AWS’s reference design demonstrates two feeds and parallel MediaLive processing, but that does not prove that your own upstream sources, failover rules, or recovery behavior are independent or correctly configured. Design and validate those paths for your production workflow before launch.

Choose the viewer experience
List the devices and networks you need to support, then determine whether you need one UHD rendition or an adaptive-bitrate ladder with lower-resolution versions. Also decide which playback formats, codec choices, DRM or authorization requirements, and player behavior your service needs. AWS documents H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC for UHD; it does not establish one universally compatible codec or prescribe a single UHD ladder for every audience.
Build the UHD channel in AWS
- Choose and verify the Region. Check current regional availability for MediaLive and MediaPackage, and for MediaConnect if you plan to use it. Availability can differ by Region.
- Confirm account quotas before committing to the design. Check the account’s MediaLive UHD-channel quota and MediaPackage channel and endpoint limits. AWS warns that account quotas can be lower than published defaults; request an increase where needed and allow time for approval.
- Configure the contribution input. Create the input that matches the upstream workflow—such as RTMP, RTP, a pull URL, or MediaConnect—and document the expected feed format. For a redundant design, configure and test both contribution paths rather than assuming that two configured inputs automatically provide independent failover.
- Create a customized MediaLive channel. Configure the UHD output at the resolution and frame rate required by the source and audience, selecting H.264 or H.265 as appropriate. Add lower-resolution or lower-bitrate companion outputs if the delivery plan calls for adaptive bitrate. AWS defines UHD/4K as vertical resolutions above 1080 through 2160. Its documentation supports H.264 and H.265 for UHD; AV1 is documented for SD and HD, not UHD.
- Check the CDI restriction if applicable. A MediaLive channel using a CDI input can have only one UHD output encode. If your design depends on multiple UHD encodes from that channel, revise the design rather than assuming the CDI channel can produce them.
- Configure packaging and endpoints. When MediaPackage fits the delivery requirements, send MediaLive’s adaptive-bitrate output to it and create the necessary HLS, DASH, or CMAF endpoints. Select only the formats and renditions needed for the target devices and service.
- Set up CloudFront and origin authorization deliberately. Configure the distribution with the appropriate MediaPackage endpoint origins and cache behavior for live manifests and segments. In the reference implementation, CloudFront supplies a CDN identifier header and MediaPackage fulfills playback requests authorized through that path; the identifier is stored in Secrets Manager. Adapt this control to your own security requirements rather than exposing an origin unintentionally.
- Deploy and review supporting resources. The reference solution uses CloudFormation and includes CloudFront distributions and a demo-player bucket. Its template is customizable; deploying it does not certify a customized UHD channel as production-ready or validate your viewer experience.
- Validate before opening the channel to viewers. Check the incoming feed, UHD output and companion renditions, manifests, segments, playback on the actual target devices, authorization behavior, and the primary-to-backup recovery path. Monitor the service during an extended run representative of its intended continuous operation.
Choose the UHD ladder, codec, and delivery path
| Decision | When it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| UHD only or UHD plus lower renditions | A UHD-only output may suit an audience and service designed around UHD playback. Add lower-resolution adaptive-bitrate renditions when device support, network conditions, or viewing requirements call for them. | Balance device support, viewer bandwidth, quality targets, and the cost of each configured output. AWS documentation does not prescribe a universal ladder for this use case. |
| H.264 or H.265 for UHD | Both codec families are documented by AWS for UHD output. | Validate audience-device support, delivery bitrate, and workflow compatibility. The documentation does not identify one codec as the universal winner. |
| MediaPackage or preformatted output delivery | Use MediaPackage when its packaging formats or origin features are useful. CloudFront documentation also describes serving already-formatted outputs from a scalable origin. | Match the origin path, packaging, cache behavior, authorization, and player to the output format you intend to serve. |
| Single or redundant contribution and processing | A single path may meet a less demanding availability target; independent feeds and parallel processing are the pattern demonstrated by AWS’s reference solution. | Validate upstream independence, failover behavior, and the additional processing cost for your own topology. |
Operate it as a continuously running service
A 24/7 channel is not costed like a short event. MediaLive pricing distinguishes running and idle resource charges. Running charges apply to attached inputs and configured outputs, and output charges can apply even when an output is paused. Model the intended always-on state, including whichever redundancy configuration you choose.

AWS’s published Live Streaming solution cost illustrations use simplifying assumptions and SD or HD examples. They are not a current quote for a continuously running UHD channel, and AWS notes that estimates may exceed actual running costs and that prices can change. Do not extrapolate the guide’s event figures to a UHD workload.

Check quotas and launch constraints
- Verify regional availability for MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect if used.
- Check the account’s UHD-channel quota and request an increase if the planned channel count exceeds it.
- Confirm MediaPackage channel and endpoint capacity in the account instead of assuming a published default applies.
- Verify the exact source-feed format and input compatibility before relying on a failover plan.
- Validate playback formats and codec choices with the intended devices and player; AWS’s architecture description is not a device-by-device compatibility matrix.
