This lets the process survive an SSH disconnect, restart after qualifying failures, and launch again after a host reboot. It does not guarantee uninterrupted playback: the input, network, YouTube live event, and music rights must all remain valid.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
systemd supervises a process on the Linux host. Unlike a command tied to an SSH terminal, a system service continues after you disconnect. With a restart policy, systemd can also relaunch FFmpeg after certain failures; with the service enabled, it can start FFmpeg when the machine boots.
That is process supervision, not stream-health monitoring. A running FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is receiving usable media. A restart cannot fix a missing input file, invalid stream key, unsupported media settings, blocked network route, or an ended or invalid YouTube live event. If FFmpeg exits and restarts while looping a file, it may begin that file again from the start.
Before you create the service
Confirm the host and media
- Use a Linux machine you can administer with systemd, either an existing host or an optional rented Linux VPS. Consider its availability, network reliability and upload capacity for your stream, cost, and whether you can regain administrative access to troubleshoot it.
- Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports the input and encoding options you intend to use. The correct command depends on the source, its codecs, and YouTube’s current ingest settings; no single bitrate, codec, or GOP value is a universal recommendation.
- Make sure the service account will be able to read the media and any configuration files it needs.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key for the live setup you will use. Keep the key private. Some encoder interfaces take the URL and key separately; others expect them combined.
Check music rights before launch
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Confirm the rights for each song, recording, composition, territory, and intended use with the relevant rights holders or a qualified rights adviser.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies such content, it may show a placeholder and warn the streamer; continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. Even licensed music may be interrupted unless the rights owner adds your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Creator Music does not support licensing for live content. A playlist, attribution, purchased recording, or “no copyright intended” note does not establish the necessary streaming rights.
Create a system-level FFmpeg service
The unit below is a template, not a tested recipe. Replace the example paths, account, and command with values for your host and media. It keeps the real stream key out of the unit file by referring to an environment file; protect that file and do not expose the key in logs, screenshots, or support requests.
1. Prepare a private configuration file
Choose a dedicated, unprivileged service account and a configuration path that it can read. For example, an administrator could create /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env containing the current ingest URL and key as environment variables:

YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL='rtmps://CURRENT-INGEST-URL/APP/PATH/STREAM-KEY'
The value above is deliberately illustrative, not a usable endpoint or key. Use the current address and key provided by YouTube. Restrict ownership and permissions on the file so only the administrator and the service account can read it; do not commit it to a repository or paste it into a public issue.

2. Write the unit file
Create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/indian-music-stream.service. Update the account, paths, and FFmpeg command to match your setup:
[Unit]
Description=Indian music YouTube stream via FFmpeg
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=ffmpeg-stream
Group=ffmpeg-stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/indian-music
EnvironmentFile=/etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/indian-music/stream.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}"
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Here, -re reads the file at its native rate, -stream_loop -1 requests continuous looping, and the example copies the source audio and video codecs. Those choices only suit compatible input and ingest requirements. If the source codecs, container, or YouTube settings require transcoding or different options, adapt the command and verify it with your installed FFmpeg build. The sample restart delay is a starting point, not a universal setting.

Keep FFmpeg in the foreground as the service’s main process; do not background it with & or use a wrapper that exits while FFmpeg continues elsewhere. Check that /usr/bin/ffmpeg, the working directory, the input path, and the environment file path are correct. Ensure the service account can read the input and configuration. If your encoder expects the ingest URL and stream name separately, adapt the command accordingly rather than assuming every interface uses one combined value.
3. Load, enable, and start the unit
After saving the unit, run these commands as an administrator:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now indian-music-stream.service
daemon-reload makes systemd read the new unit. enable --now both schedules it to start on future boots and starts it immediately. Check its state and recent logs:

sudo systemctl status indian-music-stream.service
sudo journalctl -u indian-music-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager
Choose a restart policy that fits the failure
Restart=on-failure is a practical default for a foreground FFmpeg process. According to the systemd documentation, it restarts after a non-zero exit, certain signals, qualifying operation timeouts, or watchdog timeouts. It does not restart a service that systemd intentionally stopped.
Repeated immediate failures can trigger systemd start-rate limiting and leave the unit in a failed state, so inspect both the journal and the unit’s start limits if retries stop. Use a restart delay that avoids a tight retry loop and reflects your host and network behavior. Do not treat a restart policy as a fix for a bad key, inaccessible file, unsupported media, or an event that YouTube has ended.
Verify both the process and YouTube ingest
- Check the local service: use
systemctl statusandjournalctl -u indian-music-stream.serviceto see whether FFmpeg started, can read the input, and can connect. Look for file, permission, option, and connection errors. - Check Live Control Room: inspect the stream preview and health information to confirm that YouTube receives usable media. A “running” systemd service alone does not establish healthy ingest.
- Recheck connection details if setup fails: confirm the RTMPS URL and key are current, and that the endpoint, path, and port match. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance calls for
rtmps, not plainrtmp; its troubleshooting guidance mentions port 443 where needed. The YouTube API documents primary RTMPS ingestion address fields. - After a restart, check content position: a looped file may restart from its beginning. Decide whether that interruption in sequence is acceptable for your stream.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The service stops when SSH disconnects | FFmpeg was launched from the interactive shell rather than as a system service, or the unit does not keep FFmpeg as its main foreground process. | Run it through the system-level unit, remove shell backgrounding, then inspect systemctl status and the journal. |
| The service fails immediately with a file or permission error | The path is wrong or the service account cannot read the input or environment file. | Verify the paths in the unit and grant the unprivileged service account the required read access. |
| FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube | The URL or key is stale or incorrect, the endpoint or path is wrong, or the host cannot reach the required port. | Get the current RTMPS details from Live Control Room; check the endpoint and network route. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance mentions port 443 where needed. |
| systemd retries stop and the unit is failed | Repeated failures may have hit start-rate limits, or the underlying error persists. | Read the recent journal entries and inspect the unit’s restart policy and start limits before restarting; fix the underlying problem rather than creating a rapid retry loop. |
| The service is active but YouTube does not show healthy media | FFmpeg may be unable to provide usable media, or the live event, key, format, or connection may be invalid. | Compare FFmpeg’s journal output with the Live Control Room preview and health information. A process restart cannot repair an invalid event or incompatible settings. |
| The stream restarts at the beginning of the file | FFmpeg relaunched the looped input after a process exit. | Decide whether restarting from the beginning is acceptable; systemd’s process restart does not preserve the prior playback position automatically. |
| Music is interrupted despite the service staying up | YouTube may have identified third-party content, or the channel may not be allowlisted by the rights owner. | Review YouTube’s live notices and confirm the required rights and any Content ID allowlisting with the relevant rights holders. |
