Switchboard Live YouTube Stream Stuck on Starting: How to Fix It

Find whether your stream is stuck between your encoder and Switchboard or at the YouTube destination, then follow the matching checks and fixes.

If your Switchboard Live YouTube stream is stuck on “Starting,” first find out where the video feed stops: between your encoder and Switchboard, or between Switchboard and YouTube. Check for incoming video in Switchboard’s Confidence Monitor, then use the destination status and YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped errors to choose the fix. There is no single confirmed cause for every “Starting” delay.

1. Check whether Switchboard is receiving your encoder feed

  1. Open the Switchboard workflow you are using and compare its Stream URL and Stream Key with the server and key configured in your encoder. Reveal the key in Switchboard if needed and compare it carefully. Make sure the encoder is sending to the workflow you intend to use. See Switchboard’s initial setup guide.

  2. Start the encoder’s output and check the workflow’s Confidence Monitor. It previews video arriving from the encoder. If it shows no source, Switchboard has not received a usable feed yet; destination Start buttons remain inactive until incoming video is detected. When connected, the stream-health display can show incoming bitrate and FPS. Details are in Switchboard’s workflow-page guide.

  3. Look for the workflow status to change from Not Receiving to Receiving. A successful input test only confirms the link from your encoder to Switchboard; it does not start the YouTube destination. Switchboard puts it plainly: “This will not push you live to any Destination; it only tests the link between your software and Switchboard.”

    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If there is no video or the workflow still says Not Receiving, stay on the encoder-to-Switchboard side of the problem. If video is present and the workflow says Receiving, move on to the YouTube destination.

2. Verify encoder output and settings

Check whether the encoder is actually sending

Confirm that streaming output is active in your encoder and check for its own error messages or warnings. YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version, checking the output directly in the encoder, and reviewing CPU load. If you have a local recording, inspect it too: a healthy local output helps distinguish an encoding problem from a delivery problem. YouTube’s guidance is at Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Review the settings Switchboard recommends

For initial setup, Switchboard recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe rate, and 30 or 60 FPS. Compare those recommendations with your encoder’s output settings and the needs of your video. They are setup recommendations, not proof that a different setting caused this particular start delay.

Check the outbound connection if the local output is sound

If the encoder output and local recording look healthy but Switchboard is not receiving video, test the computer’s outbound internet connection. YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider if that test identifies a connection problem. Avoid changing unrelated settings until you know which link is failing.

3. Inspect the YouTube destination and its error

Once Switchboard is receiving video, open YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream’s Health Indicator and any timestamped error messages. YouTube describes red errors as critical and potentially able to prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. Use the reported error as the lead for your next change rather than applying a generic settings reset. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

If a third-party encoder reports an error starting

YouTube’s guidance is to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with it. If your streaming software signs in to YouTube without using a stream key, YouTube says to contact that software’s support team; it may need an update.

If YouTube schedules the stream instead of going live

Switchboard’s FAQ identifies one specific possible cause of this scheduling symptom: the active template may be missing a stream title. If that is what you see, stop the stream and update the YouTube title field, then try again. This is a targeted check for a scheduled stream, not a general fix for every stream stuck on Starting. See Switchboard’s frequently asked questions.
