To stream a community radio station’s live program feed to YouTube from Linux, route the station’s audio into an encoder on the server, create a YouTube live event, and send the encoder’s output to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and private key. OBS Studio is a documented Linux option when the server has a supported graphics environment; first confirm that the station’s audio output can actually reach the encoder. Rehearse the full chain before going on air, and confirm that the station has the rights needed for a YouTube simulcast.

What you need before configuring the stream

  • A YouTube channel eligible to go live, with live streaming enabled.
  • A Linux machine capable of encoding the chosen video and audio settings, plus a stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity.
  • A defined audio path from the station’s mixer or automation output to an input the server and encoder can capture.
  • An encoder, such as OBS Studio on a Linux host that meets its requirements.
  • Confirmation that the station’s music, performances, recordings, artwork, and other broadcast material may be streamed on YouTube in the relevant territories. An existing terrestrial broadcast licence does not necessarily establish those online rights.

YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. Its live-streaming tips also call for a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Check the channel before scheduling the broadcast: YouTube live streaming tips.

Choose an encoder that fits the Linux server

OBS Studio on a server with a graphical environment

OBS Studio is a documented Linux encoder choice if the machine has the display/session support it needs. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and X11 or Wayland among its Linux/Unix requirements. Its installation guide recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions and provides an Ubuntu installation path: OBS Linux installation and OBS system requirements.

Do not assume OBS will work on every headless VPS or minimal server installation. Check the actual host’s graphics support, display session, CPU capacity, and any hardware-encoding support, and decide how the encoder will run unattended. The official guidance cited here does not validate a particular headless workaround or compare OBS with FFmpeg for this use case.

Identify the station audio path first

Configuring YouTube’s destination does not make station audio available to the encoder. Trace the actual program output from the station mixer or automation system to a capture device presented to Linux, then confirm that the selected input is available in the encoder. The correct connection and capture settings depend on the station’s equipment and the server’s hardware, so verify them locally rather than assuming a particular interface or command.

For an audio-first station, the visual layer can be a station logo, an “on air” graphic, or a schedule image. Use only visual material the station is entitled to use; YouTube does not require one particular image for this setup.

Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live event, and set its title, visibility, and intended start time.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as a password and address for the encoder. Treat the key as a secret: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or shared configuration repository. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Enter the destination in the encoder. Select YouTube if the encoder offers it; otherwise enter the supplied server URL and paste the key into the stream-key field. For ordinary RTMP-compatible ingestion, YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect the incoming preview. Confirm the correct program audio and visual are arriving in Live Control Room before starting the event for viewers.
  5. At the end, stop the YouTube event and encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that is not a substitute for a local recording or a guarantee of a permanent copy.

See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Live Control Room flow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Set conservative video, audio, and network settings

Use the settings page for the codec you have selected; bitrate figures for one codec are not universal targets for another. For an audio-led broadcast, a modest static visual is often sufficient, so avoid encoding an unnecessarily high resolution or frame rate if it adds load without helping viewers.

Setting Practical starting point or YouTube guidance
Ingest protocol YouTube recommends RTMPS for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate).
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Video codec YouTube lists H.264, HEVC/H.265, and AV1. Choose a codec supported by your encoder and use the matching YouTube bitrate guidance.
Frame rate YouTube’s settings support up to 60 fps. Use only the rate your visual content and server need.
Audio codec AAC or MP3.
Stereo audio guidance YouTube’s advanced recommendations include 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps stereo. Treat these as platform recommendations, not evidence of the station source’s current format or a guaranteed sound-quality improvement from conversion.
720p30 H.264 bitrate YouTube lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These figures apply to H.264 at 720p and 30 fps, not to every codec or resolution.
Upload capacity Keep the total sent bitrate within sustained upload capacity; YouTube recommends 20% headroom.

For the current settings and codec-specific tables, consult Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube also notes that the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available, so test the actual network under realistic conditions rather than relying on a headline ISP speed: Streaming tips.

Check the captured program for clipping, silence, channel imbalance, and the wrong source. A technically healthy stream can still deliver poor audio if the encoder is listening to the wrong input or levels are set badly.

When HLS is relevant

HLS is a separate YouTube ingestion option for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. It sends segments and has higher latency than RTMP, with additional segment, playlist, and HTTPS requirements. It is not the default choice for a straightforward community-radio relay. See Set up an HLS stream.

Rehearse the broadcast and monitor it on air

  1. Test with a representative program. YouTube recommends a test with audio and movement similar to the real stream. Check the station feed, visual, and intended encoder settings.
  2. Start the encoder early. YouTube recommends starting at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event so there is time to resolve problems.
  3. Review Live Control Room before going live. Confirm the incoming preview, audio, and stream-health status, then check that the public watch page is accessible as intended.
  4. Keep monitoring during transmission. Watch stream-health messages and listen to the broadcast from the viewer side when possible. Monitor available upload capacity and whether the program source remains correct.
  5. Test failover if the station depends on it. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable during a planned test and checking whether the player switches to the backup. Do not assume failover works without testing the actual setup.
  6. Verify any local archive. If recording locally, check that the file grows during the broadcast and that it plays. A growing file alone does not prove that its audio is usable.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause to check Next action
The channel cannot start a live stream Live streaming is not enabled yet, channel verification or eligibility is incomplete, or a restriction applies. Check the channel’s Live Control Room status and YouTube eligibility guidance. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement where applicable.
YouTube receives no signal Wrong server URL or key, encoder not sending, or network path blocked or unstable. Re-copy the event URL and key from Live Control Room, check the encoder connection state, and review stream health. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
Video arrives but station audio is silent or incorrect The encoder is using a different input than the station program output, or Linux does not expose the intended capture device. Trace the audio path from mixer or automation output through the server capture device; select that device in the encoder and test levels before the event.
Stream health reports instability or viewers buffer Sent bitrate exceeds sustained upload capacity, shared-network use reduces bandwidth, or the connection fluctuates. Measure under realistic conditions, reduce bitrate or output demands, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and retest.
OBS will not launch or is unreliable on the server The host may lack the required OpenGL support, X11/Wayland session, or capacity for the chosen workload. Check OBS’s Linux requirements against the machine and its operating environment. The cited OBS guidance does not establish a universal headless-server fix.
Audio is distorted or unbalanced Input gain may be too high, channels may be routed incorrectly, or the wrong program source may be selected. Check meters and listen to a test stream; correct the source routing and levels at the appropriate stage of the chain.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is not a replacement for sending a live mixer or microphone feed: it keeps a YouTube channel live by looping videos uploaded to the service, rather than going live from a camera or live station input. It may suit a station that wants to schedule pre-recorded programming as a continuous stream instead of operating its own Linux encoder. To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, then go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on; the video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.

Plan for rights and continuity

Before simulcasting, have the station verify that its rights cover YouTube distribution for the specific music, performances, recordings, artwork, and territories involved. The technical setup cannot determine whether the station’s existing licences are sufficient. Separately, decide who will monitor the broadcast, how the station will respond if the encoder or connection fails, and whether a local recording is needed; rehearse any backup path rather than treating it as available by default.
