You can broadcast an internet radio station to YouTube by running radio playout and an audio/video encoder on a rented VPS, then sending the encoded feed to a YouTube Live ingest endpoint. The VPS is the source encoder; YouTube receives its stream. You will need a radio source, a visual track, an active YouTube stream configuration, and an encoder setup that matches YouTube’s current requirements.
What runs on the VPS
The VPS hosts the software that selects or generates the audio and encodes the outgoing live feed. Liquidsoap can handle radio playout and route output through FFmpeg; its documentation includes a YouTube streaming destination example. Treat that example as an architectural reference, not guaranteed copy-and-paste configuration: confirm syntax against the Liquidsoap and FFmpeg versions you install.
The YouTube broadcast and the incoming stream are separate resources. You configure the feed at the encoder and associate it with the appropriate YouTube Live broadcast or stream. Google explains the distinction in Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
Prepare the radio audio and visual
Organize the audio source
Prepare the audio files or live audio input that your playout system will use, then configure Liquidsoap or another suitable radio automation system to produce a continuous program. Check that the playout process can continue through track changes and that its output reaches the encoder. A VPS’s suitability depends on the actual playout and encoding workload; no particular server size can be assumed to be adequate without testing.

Provide video as well as audio
For this audio-radio workflow, pair the program audio with a video stream, such as a station image or a simple visualizer. This is an implementation approach, not a claim that a static image is a YouTube rule. Confirm that the encoder outputs a supported video format and that the image or visualizer behaves as intended during a test.
Create and configure the YouTube Live feed

In YouTube Live, create or select the broadcast and its incoming stream configuration. Use the current stream key and ingest settings shown for that stream; do not assume a broadcast event and a continuous incoming feed are the same resource.

Configure the encoder with YouTube’s displayed server or ingest endpoint and stream key. Prefer RTMPS where supported. Google’s RTMPS guide documents a YouTube secure-ingest connection using port 443: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Keep the stream key secret. Store it outside public scripts and repositories, and avoid exposing it in screen captures or logs. The Liquidsoap book demonstrates keeping a key separately and reading it into the script.

Start the playout and encoder, then confirm in YouTube Live that the incoming feed is detected and associated with the intended broadcast before taking the broadcast live.
Set encoder output to match YouTube’s requirements
Use the current settings page for the exact resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended video bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not treat one video bitrate as universal. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For stereo audio, YouTube’s encoder page specifies a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps bitrate. These are audio settings, not a VPS sizing recommendation. For example, YouTube lists 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps; that figure applies to that video mode only, not to audio or other output settings.
Choose a mode the encoder can sustain and verify the actual outgoing feed. The selected bitrate is only one part of server capacity: playout, encoding, network stability, and available outbound transfer also matter. No provider plan, VPS price, transfer allowance, or server benchmark is established here.

Run a test before the intended broadcast. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, so test track transitions and the visual treatment rather than only checking a quiet still frame.

Check that the audio is audible and continuous, the video is present, the encoder is connected, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.

Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and the playout and encoder processes while the broadcast runs. If the incoming feed stops or degrades, determine whether the fault is in radio playout, encoding, VPS connectivity, or YouTube ingest before restarting components.
Copyright, channel eligibility, and operational limits
Having audio files does not by itself establish permission to broadcast them. Confirm that you have the rights needed for the catalog, territories, and YouTube use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before going live. Channel-specific live-stream eligibility, account restrictions, maximum duration, and archive behavior depend on circumstances not established by the encoder and ingest documentation cited here. Check the current YouTube Live interface and policies for your channel rather than assuming a particular limit or archive outcome.
Troubleshooting common VPS-to-YouTube failures
