Estimate a 24/7 YouTube stream’s upload data from its sustained total bitrate: multiply the bitrate in Mbps by 10.8 for approximate decimal GB per day, or by 324 for approximate decimal GB over 30 days. For example, a continuous 6 Mbps stream uses about 64.8 GB per day and 1,944 GB (1.944 TB) in 30 days. These are arithmetic estimates of creator-to-YouTube upload traffic, not measurements of a particular channel or the amount YouTube delivers to viewers.
What “bandwidth” means for a 24/7 stream
For this calculation, bandwidth is the stream’s sustained upload rate: the encoded audio and video sent from your computer or streaming service to YouTube, usually expressed in megabits per second (Mbps). The total transferred data is a different quantity, measured over time in gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB).
This estimate covers the creator’s stream ingest, not all audience viewing. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, so your upload bitrate does not tell you the playback rate or total data delivered to viewers. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe its recommendations and transcoding; Google Cloud’s separate Live Stream API guidance likewise treats input bitrates and output rendition ladders as distinct quantities.
Use the bitrate-and-time formula
Network transfer estimates commonly use decimal units: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes and 1 TB is 1,000 GB. Because a byte contains 8 bits, the calculation is:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Data in decimal GB = bitrate in Mbps × seconds streaming ÷ 8,000
- Per day: bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 = estimated decimal GB.
- Per 30 days: bitrate in Mbps × 324 = estimated decimal GB.
The multipliers follow from 86,400 seconds in a day and 2,592,000 seconds in 30 days. For a different period, multiply the bitrate by the actual number of seconds and divide by 8,000. A calendar month is not always 30 days, so calculate with its actual length if you need a calendar-month estimate.

Estimated upload data at common bitrates
These figures are calculations from the formula, not published measurements. They assume one continuous stream at a sustained total bitrate, use decimal units, and exclude any separate backup transmission or additional traffic from reconnects and restarts.
| Sustained total bitrate | Approx. per day | Approx. per 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 10.8 GB | 324 GB |
| 4 Mbps | 43.2 GB | 1,296 GB (1.296 TB) |
| 6 Mbps | 64.8 GB | 1,944 GB (1.944 TB) |
| 10 Mbps | 108 GB | 3,240 GB (3.24 TB) |
Worked example: a continuous 6 Mbps stream
Per day: 6 × 10.8 = 64.8 decimal GB. Over 30 days: 6 × 324 = 1,944 decimal GB, or 1.944 decimal TB. YouTube lists 6 Mbps as a recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p at 60 fps; that is an example encoder setting, not a special recommendation for ambient audio or 24/7 broadcasting. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings for recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Find the right bitrate for your calculation
Use the configured total, including audio
Check the encoder’s video bitrate and audio bitrate, or use its displayed total stream bitrate. The total is the right input because both audio and video are uploaded. If you add the two rates yourself, add each once; do not add audio again when the encoder’s total already includes it.
For variable bitrate, estimate an average
The formula assumes a sustained average rate. If your encoder uses variable bitrate, use a representative average measured over the relevant period, or a conservative high estimate if you are checking a data cap. YouTube’s published live recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR) settings. Its guidance recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health; it does not establish one universal 24/7 safety margin.

Resolution alone does not determine data use
YouTube’s recommended bitrates vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options. A mostly static ambient image may affect the quality you choose, but the available guidance does not establish an optimal ambient-channel bitrate or a special 24/7 preset. Calculate from the actual total rate you configure, and choose settings that look and sound acceptable for your content.
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance says HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more compression than H.264 at the same video quality. That qualification belongs to the HLS guidance; it is not a guaranteed reduction for every encoder, scene, or quality target, and should not be used to predict an individual channel’s observed transfer as a fixed percentage. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Check your connection and account for other traffic
Upload capacity is a rate, not a data allowance
A connection’s upload capacity, measured in Mbps, is the rate it can send data. An ISP data allowance, measured in GB or TB, is a volume over a billing period. The first determines whether the stream can be sent reliably; the second may determine whether the estimated monthly upload fits a plan’s cap. The data formula does not guarantee that a connection can sustain the configured rate.
Test the actual planned stream
YouTube recommends testing before starting, including audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitoring stream health. For an ambient channel, test the actual loop or visuals you intend to run. Confirm the connection can sustain the encoder’s upload rate while the stream is active; the official guidance does not specify a universal extra percentage for headroom. YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health guidance are the place to check current settings and recommendations.
Count a backup feed only if you send one
The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes primary and backup ingestion addresses. Their existence does not mean every channel transmits both at once. Include extra upload data only if your particular setup actually sends a separate backup feed; do not automatically double the estimate.
Why a network meter may differ
The formula estimates encoded media transfer from bitrate and duration. Actual metered totals can differ because of protocol overhead, reconnects, restarts, or a separately transmitted backup. The cited YouTube guidance does not give a universal percentage for these additions, so there is no evidence-based blanket overhead factor to add. For a channel broadcasting continuously, Google’s Live Streaming API guide includes a 24/7 feed as an example, but that example does not change the bitrate calculation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep an encoder and internet connection running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
