Put compatible fairy-tale video files in an FFmpeg concat playlist, then use FFmpeg to encode and send that repeating sequence to YouTube Live. The playlist handles playback order; it does not keep a stream alive if the computer, FFmpeg process, or internet connection fails. This guide covers playlist setup, YouTube settings, rights, continuous-operation limits, and recovery planning.
What you need before building the playlist
Prepare a computer or server that can read the video files and encode them continuously, a stable upload connection, FFmpeg, and a YouTube channel with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check that the machine can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate before scheduling an unattended broadcast; suitability depends on the workload and encoding settings.
- Use video, narration, music, and artwork that you have permission to broadcast publicly and, if relevant, keep in an archive.
- Keep the original media files accessible for the entire session. A local host offers direct file access; a remote host requires transferring the files and maintaining that machine and its connection.
- Decide whether the goal is one continuous broadcast or shorter sessions that can be archived individually.
Prepare compatible videos
The FFmpeg concat demuxer reads files sequentially without requiring a re-encode when their stream layouts are compatible. Before relying on that, inspect each file’s video and audio stream count, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rate, and audio layout. A collection of MP4 files is not automatically compatible just because the containers match.
Choose a concat method

FFmpeg’s concat FAQ describes the demuxer as the no-re-encode option where applicable and the concat filter as the choice when re-encoding is needed. If files do not match, normalize them to a common profile first or construct the sequence with the filter; do not assume stream copying will work cleanly.

Create the playlist file
- Put the videos in one folder, or choose paths that FFmpeg can access from the directory where you will run the command.
- Create a plain-text file named
playlist.ffconcat. Use UTF-8 or plain text, and make this exact header the first line:ffconcat version 1.0. FFmpeg requires that exact first-line header for automatic format recognition. - Add one
fileline per video in the intended broadcast order. For example:ffconcat version 1.0 file 'episode-01.mp4' file 'episode-02.mp4' file 'episode-03.mp4' - Save the file alongside the videos if you are using these relative filenames. Use simple filenames without unusual characters where possible, and confirm every listed path exists.
- Test the sequence before going live. The demuxer presents the listed files one after another and adjusts timestamps so each begins after the previous one. Incorrect duration metadata can still lead to timing artifacts or gaps.
Send the repeating playlist to YouTube Live
Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then copy the server URL and stream key provided for that stream. In the command below, replace the example ingest address and key with the values from Studio. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, commit it to a shared script, or expose it in logs.

-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'This is an illustrative starting command, not a tested universal preset. -re paces file input at its natural rate instead of allowing FFmpeg to read as fast as possible; -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. Those flags do not prevent a process, host, network, or YouTube ingest failure.

Match bitrate and keyframes to your output
The example is for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps: YouTube’s encoder guidance checked 2026-10-03 lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for that resolution and frame rate. The command uses 14 Mbps, not the minimum. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec; the platform can update its recommendations.
YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS, with the interval not exceeding four seconds. In the example, -g 60 produces a 60-frame GOP, equal to two seconds at 30 fps. At another frame rate, adjust the GOP so the interval remains two seconds. The sample also sets a two-times bitrate buffer with -bufsize 28000k; verify that your complete encoder configuration matches YouTube’s current guidance.

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and up to 60 fps. The example uses H.264 and AAC. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection between the encoder and Google’s servers.
Start in Studio and validate the actual stream
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into the command. Keep them private.
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the stream to appear in Studio’s preview.
- Check Studio’s stream-health messages and verify both audio and video. Test representative movement and sound from the actual playlist rather than relying on a static title card.
- Run a speed test against the intended upload bitrate, as YouTube advises, and test before announcing a permanent broadcast.
- After the test succeeds, start the intended stream. Keep the encoder and upload connection running for the whole session.
Plan for continuous operation and replays
An infinite input loop only repeats media while the FFmpeg process and its environment remain available. The process can exit, a host can reboot, power or networking can fail, or the YouTube upload can become unhealthy. Monitor FFmpeg logs and Studio’s stream-health indicators, and arrange a restart procedure appropriate to your operating environment. These are operational failure possibilities, not a claim about any particular host’s reliability.

YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that duration, so do not rely on the automatic archive behavior to preserve one complete replay. If a complete replay matters, keep a separate local recording or use planned shorter sessions with transitions. A local recording can also provide a copy if the live broadcast is interrupted.

Clear rights and set the audience appropriately
A traditional fairy tale being old does not automatically make a particular animated adaptation, illustration, narration, or soundtrack free to use. Confirm that you have the rights needed for public live streaming and any intended replay or recording.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube also says licensed third-party streams may still be interrupted if the channel has not been added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist where applicable. If you rely on a license, confirm whether allowlisting is required and ask the owner to add the channel when needed.
Because animated fairy tales may be made for children or general audiences, determine the intended audience for the actual programming and apply YouTube’s current audience designation and content policies. The correct classification depends on the works and intended audience, not simply the fairy-tale label.
