If your YouTube stream key stopped working after a channel permissions change, first check whether you still have a role that can access it. Viewers cannot see the key, and Editors cannot reset it; an Owner or Manager can retrieve or reset it in YouTube Studio. A permissions change does not necessarily invalidate a key already saved in your encoder, so check the role, key, and stream URL before replacing equipment or assuming the key was revoked.
Check whether this is a permissions problem or a stale key
In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Permissions and confirm both the channel and your assigned role. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials, so share them only with people who need them and through a secure channel. YouTube’s stream-key guidance says an Owner or Manager must reset a key.
| Channel role | Relevant stream-key access |
|---|---|
| Owner | Can manage live streams and permissions, and reset a stream key. |
| Manager | Can manage live streams and permissions, and reset a stream key. |
| Editor | Can manage live streams but cannot delete or reset stream keys. |
| Viewer | Can monitor streams and view settings other than the stream key; cannot manage live streams. |
These capabilities are described in YouTube’s channel-permissions guidance. If the channel uses older Brand Account user access rather than channel permissions, role names and capabilities may differ; consult YouTube’s Brand Account migration guidance before applying this role table.
Retrieve or reset the key with an authorized role
- Open the correct channel in YouTube Studio. Make sure it is the channel associated with the stream.
- Open the Live Control Room. Choose Create → Go Live, then select Stream.
- Check Stream key. If you only need to reconnect and the displayed key is still the intended one, copy that key. If it needs replacement, an Owner or Manager can select Reset beside the key.
- Give the current key to the encoder operator securely. Treat it as a credential; do not post or send it publicly.
Resetting creates a replacement, so any encoder still configured with the previous key will need to be updated. The official steps are in Manage live stream settings.

Update both encoder connection fields
A stream key is only one part of the encoder configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup instructs you to copy the stream URL into the encoder’s server or RTMP field and the key into its Stream Key field. Check both against the values shown in Live Control Room; an old URL can prevent a connection even when the key is correct.
- In the encoder, replace the Stream Key value with the current key shown in Live Control Room.
- Check the server or stream URL field against the current stream URL in Live Control Room.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- Once the preview appears, click Go live in Live Control Room to publish the stream. Starting the encoder and publishing the stream are separate actions.

Check RTMPS separately if the encoder still cannot connect
If your encoder is configured for RTMPS, confirm that it supports RTMPS and that its server URL matches the RTMPS URL displayed in Live Control Room. Do not assume the displayed default RTMP URL is interchangeable with RTMPS. If the encoder reports an SSL error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance identifies port 443 as a workaround to check. Follow the exact URL and connection settings shown for your stream; see Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
If Studio will not let the channel go live
Livestream eligibility is separate from stream-key permissions. YouTube lists channel verification and having no livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days among the requirements to start streaming. Check these if Studio itself will not let the channel go live; do not treat them as an automatic consequence of a role change. See Get started with live streaming.

When nobody can access or reset the key
If no available user is an Owner or Manager, an authorized channel owner or manager must regain access before the key can be reset. The documented guidance does not establish a permission-change propagation time or a guaranteed recovery route for a channel with no accessible authorized user. Avoid assuming that waiting a particular number of minutes or sending another invitation will solve it; account-specific recovery remains unresolved until an authorized person can access the channel.
