How to Use Restream with OBS to Loop a Video on YouTube

Use OBS Media Source Loop to repeat a local video, send it through Restream, and verify the right YouTube live event before broadcasting.

To loop a prerecorded video as a YouTube live stream through Restream, add the local file to an OBS Media Source, enable that source’s Loop setting, send OBS to Restream, and select YouTube as a destination. This broadcasts an encoder-based live stream; it is not the same as a viewer choosing Loop on a YouTube video.

Before you start

  • A computer that can play and encode the video, OBS, a local video file, and a stable upload connection. The computer and OBS must stay running for this do-it-yourself method.
  • A Restream account connected to YouTube, or the credentials for a Restream encoder stream.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Live Control Room and have its settings available. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and getting-started guidance.

Menu wording can change. Use the labels below as a guide and confirm the selected event and destination in the current interfaces before going live.

Set up a looping video in OBS

  1. Open OBS and select or create the scene you want to broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Give the source a name, then choose the local video file.
  3. In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. This setting plays the file again after playback completes. Do not confuse it with Restart playback when source becomes active, which controls what happens when the source becomes active, or Show nothing when playback ends, which controls what appears at the end if the source is not looping. OBS lists supported formats including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
  4. Check the OBS preview and audio meters. Make sure the source is visible in the scene, the sound is routed as intended, and the video can play through its end and restart. A single local file generally needs Media Source, not VLC Video Source; VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed.

Connect OBS to Restream and select YouTube

There are two connection paths. Account integration is generally the simpler setup; manual RTMP entry makes the server and key explicit. Either way, OBS sends one feed to Restream, and Restream forwards it to the enabled destinations.

Option 1: Connect your Restream account in OBS

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
  2. Select Restream.io as the service and connect your Restream account. Restream says this links OBS to the stream card marked Default RTMP. Follow the sign-in prompts and verify that OBS shows the intended Restream connection. See Restream’s OBS connection instructions.

Option 2: Enter Restream RTMP details manually

  1. In Restream, create or open an Encoder | RTMP stream and copy its stream key.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the option to use a custom server, and enter the Restream server and stream key. Restream says the server can be set to Autodetect or to a manually selected region. Use the server details shown for your Restream stream rather than reusing another service’s URL. See Restream’s OBS connection instructions and its streaming-software setup guide.

Treat the stream key as a password: do not show it on screen or share it. YouTube describes it as the credential that lets an encoder send a feed. If it is exposed, reset it in the relevant service before continuing. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Configure the YouTube destination and event

  1. In Restream, open the encoder stream and enable the connected YouTube channel as a destination. If the channel is not connected yet, add it through Restream’s destination settings.
  2. Set the title, description, and thumbnail as appropriate. Restream may allow destination-specific titles and descriptions, so check what will appear on YouTube rather than assuming all destinations share the same metadata. See Restream’s streaming-software guide.
  3. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the correct scheduled or created encoder event is selected and ready to receive the stream. Check the event’s visibility and other settings before broadcast.

Check OBS output settings, then go live

Restream’s OBS setup guidance recommends CBR rate control and a 2-second keyframe interval; it also gives color-format and profile recommendations. Treat those as Restream’s guidance, not universal settings for every resolution, format, or destination. Check the current YouTube requirements for your event before choosing resolution, bitrate, encoder, and other output settings. See Restream’s OBS setup guide and YouTube’s streaming tips.

  1. Start streaming in OBS.
  2. Check the Restream stream page for incoming-stream status and performance.
  3. Open the YouTube Live Control Room preview or watch page. Confirm that the intended event receives the video and audio and that the picture and sound are clear.
  4. Watch for the file’s ending and restart. Confirm that the loop begins where you expect, with no unintended blank scene or audio gap.
  5. Monitor the broadcast after it starts. A successful OBS connection alone does not confirm that the correct YouTube event is live or that viewers can hear and see it.

For a long broadcast, remember that YouTube’s viewer-side DVR is separate from OBS looping. DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume within a live stream; YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream DVR guidance.

OBS looping versus YouTube’s Loop control

OBS’s Media Source Loop setting repeats the local file in the feed you broadcast. YouTube’s player Loop control repeats an already published video for an individual viewer; it does not create a live stream. If you only want to replay a video for yourself, use the YouTube player menu instead of setting up OBS and Restream. See YouTube’s video-loop instructions.

Common problems and fixes

  • OBS connects, but YouTube shows no stream: Confirm YouTube is enabled as a Restream destination, the correct event is open in Live Control Room, and the stream key and server belong to the intended Restream encoder stream.
  • The video plays once and stops: Reopen the Media Source properties and verify Loop is enabled. Restart playback and observe the transition at the file’s end.
  • The stream is live but the picture is black or missing: Confirm the Media Source is present and visible in the active scene, the correct file is selected, and the scene appears in the OBS preview.
  • Viewers cannot hear the video: Check the source’s audio routing and OBS audio meters, then listen to the YouTube preview. A moving picture does not prove audio is reaching the stream.
  • The wrong event or metadata appears: Check the selected YouTube event and the destination-specific title, description, and thumbnail in Restream.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in the service that issued it and update OBS with the replacement. Never display a key in a recording or stream.
  • The broadcast drops or becomes unstable: Check the Restream stream status, OBS output, and the computer’s internet connection; restore the feed and verify YouTube’s preview again. A local OBS workflow depends on the computer, encoding capacity, network, source playback, event setup, and platform availability staying workable.
