What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your YouTube stream looks blurry while using Restream, first check what your encoder is actually sending: output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval. Then check whether your upload connection can sustain that bitrate. Restream says its regular relay passes the incoming stream through unchanged; YouTube processes live streams for playback, so a difference in appearance alone does not establish that Restream caused the blur.
For H.264, YouTube’s live-stream recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Those targets only help if your connection can hold them with headroom. Use the steps below to isolate the cause without changing several settings at once.
1. Check the encoder’s actual output
A project canvas or source file set to 1080p does not guarantee that the encoder is sending 1080p. Check the output settings of your streaming software, not just the canvas or camera source.
- Output resolution: confirm the encoded output resolution and match it to the detail in your source.
- Frame rate: check the encoded frame rate. Higher frame rates and fast movement generally need more bitrate to retain comparable detail.
- Codec: confirm whether the stream uses H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary by codec.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoding.
- Keyframe interval: use 2 seconds as recommended by YouTube; do not exceed 4 seconds.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current specifications. These are live-ingestion settings, not the separate recommendations for uploading a finished video.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Set a YouTube-specific bitrate
For a YouTube live stream, use the recommendation for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you are sending. YouTube’s current table gives these video bitrate targets:
| Codec | 720p30 | 720p60 | 1080p30 | 1080p60 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 8 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 6 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s live ingestion recommendations; verify the current table before a broadcast because platform guidance can change. Do not substitute an upload-video bitrate table for a live-stream target, or assume one codec’s values apply to another.

Restream’s general encoder guide describes 4,500–6,000 Kbps as a starting point for 1080p30, but also advises checking destination requirements. That broad multistream baseline is lower than YouTube’s current H.264 1080p30 live recommendation, so use YouTube’s destination-specific table when configuring a YouTube stream. Restream’s guide is at Best encoder settings for live streaming.
3. Make sure your upload connection can sustain the target
A bitrate target is not useful if the connection cannot deliver it consistently. Measure upload speed—not download speed—under conditions similar to your stream, including other people and devices using the network. YouTube says total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping 20% headroom. Its guidance is in live encoder settings and streaming tips.

- Estimate the total stream bitrate, including audio, and compare it with sustained upload capacity.
- If upload speed fluctuates or the stream reports instability, reduce video bitrate first.
- If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate to a combination your connection can hold reliably.
- Change one setting at a time, then test again with representative motion and detail.
A stable lower-resolution stream can look better than a higher-resolution stream that repeatedly runs short of bandwidth. Restream’s encoder-quality troubleshooting article lists 1.5 Mbps for 720p and 3 Mbps for 1080p as minimum troubleshooting thresholds; those are not replacements for YouTube’s higher recommended targets. It also advises checking upload capacity and server selection, and reducing bitrate, resolution, FPS, or encoder preset if needed. See Restream’s bad encoder quality guide.
4. Inspect stream health and test representative content
Before relying on a public broadcast, test with the kind of content you will actually stream. Include movement, fine detail, and audio; a static screen can conceal problems that become obvious during gameplay or a fast-moving scene.

- Check YouTube’s stream-health panel and messages during the test.
- Confirm that the encoder’s output matches the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- Watch the YouTube playback quality options and compare the result at a consistent resolution rather than judging from a single viewer’s automatic playback setting.
If YouTube reports unstable delivery or mismatched settings, address those before changing relay options. The health messages help distinguish an encoder or connection problem from differences in playback processing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Tell relay quality apart from YouTube processing
Restream states that its regular relay does not modify incoming streams: the stream quality sent to Restream is what destinations receive. YouTube, in turn, transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and connections. As a result, a Restream-side preview and YouTube playback can look different without proving that Restream degraded the feed.

Compare what the encoder sends with Restream’s preview, if available, and YouTube’s stream-health information and playback quality options. If the incoming feed is already blurry, investigate encoder output and upload stability. If the incoming feed looks clean but YouTube playback does not, allow for YouTube’s processing and compare playback at the same quality setting. Without observations from the actual stream, the cause cannot be determined from appearance alone. Restream explains its relay behavior in My quality is bad on some platforms.
6. When Restream transcoding is relevant
Restream offers a separately purchased transcoding add-on that lets you set output per channel. Restream documents maximum output of 1920×1080, 6,000 Kbps video, 320 Kbps audio, and 60 fps, and reports an average of 2–3 seconds of added delay. See Restream’s transcoding guide (dated January 23, 2026).
This option may suit a setup that needs different output settings for different destinations. It is not a universal fix for blur: the documentation does not say transcoding restores detail already lost in the incoming feed or resolves an unstable encoder connection. Establish that the incoming stream is clean before considering per-channel output changes.
Common causes and fixes
| What you notice | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Everything looks soft, including a static scene | Encoded output resolution, source detail, and bitrate | Confirm the actual output resolution; use the YouTube target for the codec and frame rate, if upload capacity allows. |
| Quality drops during movement or busy scenes | Bitrate relative to motion and upload stability | Check sustained upload capacity and headroom; if unstable, lower bitrate or reduce resolution/frame rate. |
| Encoder settings look right but YouTube reports problems | YouTube stream-health messages and encoder output | Resolve any reported instability or mismatch, then retest with representative content. |
| Restream preview looks different from YouTube playback | Compare at the same playback quality and review YouTube health information | Do not assume the relay caused the difference; YouTube transcodes live streams for playback. |
| One destination needs different output from another | Whether per-channel settings justify added delay and a paid add-on | Consider Restream transcoding only after confirming the incoming feed is clean. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than a live camera or gameplay encoder session, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
