The clearest cited wattage comparison is an older Intel transcoding test—not a YouTube live-stream test. To find out what it saves on your setup, compare whole-PC power at the wall during matched streams.
What Quick Sync changes—and what it does not prove
Quick Sync is Intel’s hardware video-encoding capability. Instead of doing the encoding work in software on the CPU, compatible systems can use dedicated media hardware. OBS describes hardware encoding as moving work away from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU, and generally recommends hardware encoders for performance. That explains where encoding runs; it does not guarantee that the entire computer draws fewer watts in every configuration.
Intel says its media engine handles hardware video encoding, decoding, and processing. Its oneAPI GPU Optimization Guide notes that “fully fixed function work can be very low power if configured to use low power pathways.” Actual availability and behavior depend on the hardware generation and system configuration. A nonstop stream’s total draw can also include rendering the scene, capturing or playing content, the display, networking, and the PC’s baseline idle power.
What the published wattage comparison says
Intel’s September 2015 presentation reported 48.4 W for software encoding and 24.74 W for Quick Sync encoding, with reported rates of 60 fps and 280 fps, respectively. These were Intel internal measurements using CyberLink Media Espresso 6.7.3521 in Fast Conversion Mode, a demo clip, an Intel Core i7-4900MQ reference platform, and Windows 7. The figures describe that particular transcoding task, not a modern live stream or a measurement of the total wall power of a streaming PC. They do not show that Quick Sync will halve your PC’s power use.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
No directly comparable current whole-PC wattage test for a nonstop YouTube stream is established here. Without your measured watts, streaming hours, and electricity rate, an annual bill saving cannot be calculated responsibly.
Check whether Quick Sync is available
Availability depends on the processor, graphics configuration, operating system, drivers, and streaming software. OBS lists Quick Sync Video support on Windows and Linux. Its guidance lists Intel HD Graphics on Intel Core i-series processors 2xxx or newer, while recommending 4xxx or newer because early Quick Sync generations had lower quality. Check the current OBS guidance and your exact processor rather than treating that historical minimum as a guarantee for every setup.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Check the integrated graphics. Intel warns that Quick Sync is available only if the processor’s graphics are enabled. On a PC with a separate graphics card, disabling the iGPU in firmware or system settings may also disable Quick Sync.
- Check the encoder in your streaming application. In OBS, inspect the available output encoder options. If Quick Sync does not appear, confirm that the processor graphics are enabled and that the system’s graphics drivers and OBS version support your hardware.
- Compare suitable encoders. OBS advises using the primary graphics adapter’s hardware encoder when the PC has a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU. Quick Sync is not automatically the best choice for every PC; test the options actually available to you.

Measure the power cost on your own PC
A plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure the complete PC’s draw at the wall. It cannot isolate the encoder’s contribution, but wall power is the relevant outcome if your question is what the whole setup costs to run.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Choose one repeatable workload. Use the same game or scene, capture method, overlays, and background applications in each test. Avoid comparing an idle desktop with a demanding game stream.
- Hold stream settings constant. Keep resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, scene, and stream duration the same. Change only the encoder—such as software encoding versus Quick Sync—so the comparison is meaningful.
- Measure each run at the wall. Record average watts or energy in kWh over comparable periods. Let the stream settle before recording, and repeat the runs if practical to reduce the effect of short-lived fluctuations.
- Check stream performance too. Note image quality, dropped frames, and stability. A lower wall reading is not useful if the stream becomes unreliable or the output quality is unacceptable.
- Estimate cost from your own readings. For a steady average draw, approximate energy use as average watts ÷ 1,000 × streaming hours. Multiply the resulting kWh by your electricity rate. If the measured difference is small or fluctuates between runs, treat it as inconclusive rather than promising a recurring saving.
This method compares complete-system power under your workload; it does not identify which component caused a difference. Your result applies to the tested PC and settings, not to every Quick Sync system.

If the goal is keeping prerecorded video live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud runs the loop, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. That avoids leaving a home PC running for the stream, though it is a different approach from measuring or reducing Quick Sync power on a local streaming setup.
