First inventory what OBS does, then build and test the equivalent inputs, overlays, audio processing, and recovery plan before cutting over. For an always-on Indian music channel, verify music rights separately: changing encoders does not prevent YouTube copyright interruptions.
Is FFmpeg the right replacement for your OBS setup?
OBS is a graphical, scene-based production tool; FFmpeg is a command-line pipeline for reading media, selecting and filtering streams, encoding, and publishing to an output URL. The better fit depends on how the channel is produced, not whether it plays Indian music.

These are workflow differences, not benchmark results. They do not establish that FFmpeg uses less CPU or is more reliable on your machine. FFmpeg’s command options are positional: generally, an option applies to the next input or output, so placement matters. Protocol and encoder availability vary by build. Check ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders on the actual streaming host before settling on a codec or hardware-encoding path. See the FFmpeg command documentation and protocol documentation.
Inventory what OBS currently does
Before building a command, write down every source and operator action that contributes to the live output. A switch can fail even when the music file plays if an essential filter, visual, or control disappears.

- Audio: identify whether OBS receives a file, playlist, application audio, microphone, or a mix. Record filters, levels, transitions, and any processing that is part of the channel sound.
- Visual: note whether the output is a still image, video, scene, or combination. List overlays, text, transitions, and how often the image changes.
- Playlist behavior: document the source of the playlist, supported file formats, ordering, what happens at the end of a track, and how new tracks are added.
- Operations: record who starts and stops the stream, how the stream is monitored, and what the operator does after an encoder or internet failure.
- Recording and archive: determine whether OBS saves a local recording, where it is stored, and how you verify that files are growing and usable.
- Host details: note the operating system, FFmpeg version/build, available encoders, intended output resolution and frame rate, and measured outbound bandwidth from the actual streaming location.
If scenes change often or an operator needs immediate controls, keep OBS or plan a tested control layer. If the channel uses a stable playlist and fixed visual, FFmpeg may be a simpler repeatable pipeline—but the playlist, loops, restart behavior, and visual generation still need deliberate design. In particular, test how the installed FFmpeg version handles your chosen input demuxer and looping behavior; do not assume a still image and an audio playlist will advance or loop together as intended.
Prepare YouTube and protect the stream key
- Create a private or unlisted test stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Use it to validate the new pipeline without making the migration itself your first production test.
- Copy the current ingest URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. Use the exact RTMPS URL shown there rather than an old tutorial’s generic server address. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP over TLS/SSL; see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Keep the key secret. YouTube describes a stream key as a password and address. Do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or support post. Supply it through a protected environment or secret store, and reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Confirm the channel and stream settings in the Live Control Room, including privacy and the intended watch page. Do not assume a past key or ingest address is still the one assigned to the current stream.
Choose settings that match YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced recommendations include 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For SDR, the listed advanced settings use Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. These are YouTube’s published platform recommendations; verify the current page and Live Control Room settings when you publish, because platform guidance can change. The figures above are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of your Indian ISP’s upload capacity and not guarantees of a stable stream. Choose a codec that your installed FFmpeg build and host can encode reliably, then test actual outbound throughput from that host and location. YouTube recommends leaving 20% spare upload capacity; shared network use can reduce what the encoder gets, and a connectivity disruption can break the stream. For primary and backup streams, account for primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20% headroom. Do not use a household download-speed result as a substitute for an outbound test. There is no channel-specific command that can be safely finalized without knowing the operating system, FFmpeg build, inputs, playlist source, visual needs, encoder, and tested uplink. The general pipeline should specify the input or playlist, visual source or generation, explicit audio and video mapping, filters if needed, encoding settings consistent with the current YouTube recommendations, and the current RTMPS destination. Keep credentials out of the command text that you share or store in an exposed location. Validate all input-loop and playlist-advance behavior with the exact FFmpeg version you will operate.

Test the FFmpeg stream before cutover
Use YouTube’s test and operational guidance as a checklist, adapted for a permanent radio-style channel. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting at least 15 minutes before its scheduled time; for a continuous channel, use those lead times as a conservative test and cutover window rather than treating them as a permanent-stream rule.
- Start the test encoder early and confirm the Live Control Room receives a preview. Check that the selected visual appears correctly and that audio is present, intelligible, and at the expected level.
- Check the audience view by opening the watch page from the channel and on a mobile device. Confirm privacy and access behave as intended.
- Verify recording and storage if you keep a local archive: check that files are growing during the test and that a completed test file is intact and playable. Make an archive retention plan before continuous output consumes the available disk.
- Exercise recovery deliberately. YouTube’s checklist suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. For your migration, also verify how you restart the FFmpeg process and return to the known OBS configuration. A failover test is not a promise that YouTube will always transition seamlessly.
- Monitor continuously during the test. Check the outgoing stream’s audio and video, stream health, and the watch page rather than assuming that a running process means viewers are receiving a good stream.
Plan supervision, rollback, and the production cutover
An always-on YouTube live stream needs a way to recover from more than an encoder error: the process, host, power, and network can all fail. The cited YouTube guidance does not prescribe a Linux service manager, Windows task runner, restart policy, UPS size, backup provider, or guaranteed uptime. A systemd service, Windows service wrapper, watchdog, backup uplink, or battery backup may be implementation options, but validate them on your platform and do not mistake them for YouTube requirements.

Use a staged cutover
- Keep the working OBS profile and its known-good settings intact while the private or unlisted FFmpeg test runs.
- Choose a maintenance or cutover window, alert anyone who operates the channel, and ensure someone can access the host and Live Control Room.
- Start the FFmpeg pipeline and inspect preview, audio/video, watch-page access, and archive behavior before relying on it as the production source.
- Stop the OBS encoder only when the new output is confirmed. Keep the OBS configuration available as the rollback path if the FFmpeg pipeline or its control layer fails.
- After cutover, use monitoring and alerts appropriate to your setup, schedule periodic archive checks, and test the restart and rollback procedure rather than waiting for an outage.

Changing from OBS to FFmpeg does not change music rights or YouTube’s copyright systems. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for third-party content. If a match is detected, the live video may be replaced with a placeholder and the operator warned; continued third-party content can interrupt or terminate the stream. Confirm permission for each recording and the territories where you intend to broadcast. If you use licensed third-party music, ask the rights owner or distributor whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a stream can be interrupted even when the creator has a licence if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. An archive of the live stream can also receive a Content ID claim after broadcast. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshoot common migration problems
