The exact command depends on the codecs in your replay and the encoders in your FFmpeg build, so test the file and preview the broadcast before making it public.
Before you start
- A local video file that FFmpeg can read. This workflow starts with an exported or otherwise available file; it does not extract a replay from Fortnite.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, according to YouTube Help.
- FFmpeg installed on the computer that will send the stream, and enough upload capacity for your chosen output bitrate.
- Permission to rebroadcast the particular replay, event footage, game content, audio, and overlays in your file. Access to a replay does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it.
YouTube’s requirements and UI labels can change. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live to reach Live Control Room, then create or select an encoder stream. The stream setup provides a server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
Prepare and inspect the replay file
Confirm that the file plays through from beginning to end and that it contains the intended picture and audio. An old tournament replay may include licensed music, overlays, or footage with separate rights considerations. Check the permissions applicable to your specific file before scheduling a continuous public rebroadcast.
FFmpeg’s available encoders and accepted options depend on how it was built; its online documentation is regenerated, so consult documentation matching your installed version. The input’s codecs and properties determine whether you can copy its streams into the output or need to transcode. Without inspecting the file, there is no reliable universal choice.

Set up YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- In Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream and choose the intended visibility and stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key supplied for that stream. Do not paste the key into a public command, screenshot, or chat.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest where supported. The URL commonly has the RTMPS scheme, but use the exact server URL shown for your stream rather than assuming a particular endpoint.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says to enter the Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. The key is a credential, not a public channel identifier.
Build and validate the FFmpeg command
A looping file-to-live command needs to read the file repeatedly, pace output at real-time speed, and send a live FLV stream to YouTube’s ingest URL. FFmpeg documents input options, looping, and muxers, but the appropriate option placement and encoding settings depend on your build and media. The pattern below is a starting point, not a tested command:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "replay.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -r 60 -g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "YOUR_RTMPS_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the input filename and output URL with your actual values. This example encodes H.264 at 720p60-style bitrate, uses a two-second GOP at 60 frames per second, and encodes AAC audio; it does not resize the input to 720p. If the file is not 60 fps, lacks audio, uses incompatible codecs, or your FFmpeg build lacks libx264, adjust the command rather than assuming this example fits. Verify the available encoders with your installed FFmpeg documentation or build information.

What the options do
-rereads input at native, real-time pace rather than sending a file as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1requests indefinite input looping. FFmpeg option order matters; place input options before the relevant-iand test with your installed version.-i "replay.mp4"selects the local media file. Quote paths that contain spaces.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode video and audio. If the input already matches the intended stream profile, stream copying may avoid re-encoding, but compatibility must be checked against the actual file and YouTube ingest requirements.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeset video rate-control values in this example; the actual bitrate should suit both the chosen profile and the upload connection.-r 60targets 60 frames per second. Do not force a frame rate that the source or desired output does not support without checking for judder or duplicated frames.-g 120and-keyint_min 120target a 120-frame GOP, which is two seconds at 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.-f flvselects the FLV output muxer used for this RTMP-style ingest workflow.
Do not put a real stream key in a script you share or in a command screenshot. Command-line arguments can also be visible to other local users or process-monitoring tools. Use a private environment and reset the key if it is disclosed.
Choose bitrate, resolution, and keyframes
Match output quality to the file and the sustained upload capacity of the sending connection. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. RTMPS is recommended. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates for these specific profiles, not universal values for all codecs or frame rates.

| Output profile | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube advises leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total outgoing bitrate. Account for audio and any other traffic on the connection; a speed test’s brief peak is not a guarantee of sustained upload capacity. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the target with headroom, lower the output bitrate or resolution and test again.
HLS is a separate YouTube ingestion option, but the available guidance does not establish a reason to use it for an ordinary replay stream. Use the protocol and server URL presented for your selected stream.
Preview before going public
- Start FFmpeg while the YouTube stream is set to private or unlisted, as appropriate for your test.
- Wait for the signal to appear in the correct Live Control Room preview and check the stream health indicator.
- Listen for audio, inspect motion and image quality, and confirm that the file loops at the expected point without a black frame or unintended silence.
- Check the output bitrate against upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Only change visibility or go live to the intended audience after the preview is sound.
YouTube recommends testing before going public, monitoring stream health, and ensuring upload capacity. Test representative sections of the replay, not only its opening seconds.

Manage the live stream, DVR, and archive
YouTube’s DVR feature lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream. For streams longer than 12 hours, rewind capability may be limited or unavailable. Separately, YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a longer broadcast.
Decide whether viewers should have DVR controls and check the corresponding Live Control Room setting. When you want to stop, end the broadcast in YouTube’s live controls and stop FFmpeg deliberately. Confirm the stream has ended rather than leaving an encoder process running unintentionally.
If you also keep a local recording or archive, allow for its storage use and check that the archive is intact and growing as expected. An external drive is optional, useful only if your existing storage is insufficient.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No signal appears in Live Control Room | Incorrect server URL or key, stream not enabled, or a connection issue | Re-copy the server URL and key from the selected encoder stream, confirm the stream is enabled, and check FFmpeg’s error output. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| FFmpeg rejects an option or encoder | The installed build differs from the command’s assumptions | Check the installed FFmpeg version and available encoders, then consult documentation for that build. Confirm the option placement, especially for input looping and real-time pacing. |
| Video or audio is missing or incompatible | The replay’s codecs, streams, or frame rate do not match the chosen output | Inspect the actual input streams, then select compatible encoding or stream-copy settings. Test the resulting preview before broadcasting publicly. |
| Stream health is poor or the broadcast buffers | Outgoing bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, or the connection fluctuates | Lower bitrate or resolution, stop other upload-heavy activity, and leave the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. |
| Loop boundary glitches or playback runs too quickly | Input pacing or the media’s end/start transition needs checking | Verify real-time input pacing and the looping option against your FFmpeg build. Preview the end-to-start transition with the actual replay. |
| Broadcast ends or archive behavior differs from expectation | YouTube stream lifecycle and duration rules apply independently of FFmpeg looping | Check Live Control Room status and YouTube’s duration guidance. DVR rewind may be limited beyond 12 hours; automatic archiving is stated for encoder streams under 12 hours. |
