H.265 (HEVC) is supported by YouTube for RTMP/RTMPS, so the codec alone does not explain a “Bad video settings” warning. YouTube uses that summary for several different problems, including an open GOP, keyframes arriving too slowly, an unsupported codec or container, and multiple video streams. Find the detailed health issue first, then adjust the setting it identifies.
Why YouTube reports “Bad video settings”
The warning is a summary, not a diagnosis. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.265 (HEVC), H.264, and AV1 as supported video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. A supported codec does not guarantee that the encoder is sending a valid stream: the container, GOP structure, keyframe cadence, stream count, or other settings may still be wrong. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and its Live API health issue reference cover these separate checks.
Without the complete health message, encoder model and version, and actual output settings, it is not possible to identify the fault in a particular stream. Do not assume that HEVC is unsupported or that switching to H.264 will fix it.
Start with the detailed health message
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s health or stream status details. Copy the full message and its issue type, not only the “Bad video settings” label.
- If you use the Live API, inspect
status.healthStatus.configurationIssues[]. YouTube exposes configuration issues with descriptions and severity. Match the issue type to the relevant check below. - Record the encoder’s actual output settings. Note the codec and profile, container, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and GOP mode, audio settings, and whether a backup stream is configured.
Fix the issue type YouTube identifies
openGop: change to a closed GOP
YouTube’s health reference identifies open GOP as unsupported. In the encoder, select closed GOP (or disable open GOP), then confirm that the output—not just the preset description—uses that structure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
gopSizeLong or gopSizeOver: shorten the keyframe interval
YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Set the encoder to two seconds where possible, and verify the emitted stream follows that cadence. If the warning persists, inspect the actual output rather than relying on a nominal preset value.
videoCodec: verify the emitted codec
Confirm that the actual video bitstream uses a codec currently supported for the selected ingestion method. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. If the encoder label says HEVC but the output is different or malformed, the label alone does not establish what YouTube receives.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
badContainer or multipleVideoStreams: inspect the stream and tracks
Check the container being emitted and confirm the stream contains one video stream. A supported video codec does not rule out an incompatible container or extra video track. Use the issue description to distinguish these cases.
Resolution, bitrate, frame rate, or primary/backup mismatch
Compare the actual resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current table for the selected codec and target format. Its RTMP/RTMPS encoder table supports up to 60 fps, and bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not apply H.264 figures to H.265; use the matching codec column in the current YouTube table.

For reference, YouTube’s table accessed on 2026-10-03 gives these H.265/AV1 recommendations: 1080p at 30 fps, 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended; 1080p at 60 fps, 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended; 2160p (4K) at 60 fps, 10 Mbps minimum and 35 Mbps recommended. These are codec- and format-specific operational recommendations, not guarantees that a stream with those numbers will pass every health check.
If sending primary and backup encodes, check for the mismatch YouTube identifies. Keep codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and bitrate consistent where required by the alert.

Audio or secondary-stream alerts
A video-settings summary does not necessarily mean video is the only issue. YouTube reports audio codec, sample-rate, channel-limit, and primary/backup mismatch issues separately. Read the detailed message and check audio settings if it flags them.

For a standard SDR stream
Use the SDR color settings appropriate to the encoder and target format. YouTube’s general guidance includes Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR recommendations. Check the corresponding current encoder table rather than changing color settings at random.

For an HDR live stream
HDR has separate requirements: YouTube currently uses H.265/HEVC for HDR live streaming and allows RTMP(S) or HLS in its Control Room setup. Its HDR instructions specify 10-bit settings. For OBS, YouTube’s guidance calls for version 30.1 or newer, a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. See YouTube’s HDR live-streaming instructions. The Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so judge color output using an appropriate HDR monitoring workflow rather than the preview alone.
Test the corrected stream before going live
- Apply the change indicated by the issue type, keeping unrelated settings unchanged so you can tell whether the fix worked.
- Run a test stream with representative movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health before an event.
- Watch the health panel and full messages while the stream runs. Confirm the specific issue clears; a working preview by itself does not show that every configuration warning is resolved.
- If it remains, capture the full health message and the encoder’s output configuration, including any backup stream. Those details are needed to distinguish a YouTube-side diagnosis from an encoder configuration problem.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded video running continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option, not a fix for a live encoder’s H.265 configuration. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports whatever quality you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
