OBS showing “connected” does not necessarily mean your YouTube event is live. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s usual workflow is to receive the feed, show it in the Live Control Room preview, and then have you select Go live—unless auto-start is enabled. Start by checking the event and preview; only change encoding settings if YouTube’s stream-health message points to a format problem.
1. Check the event and start it in YouTube

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the exact scheduled event you intend to broadcast. Make sure you are not looking at a different stream or an old event.

With OBS sending the feed, wait for the preview to appear in that event. For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s documented process is to wait for the preview and then click Go live, unless auto-start is enabled. Starting OBS and seeing its connected indicator alone does not establish that the event has been published live. YouTube’s streaming workflow describes the preview and start step.

If the preview is present but the event remains offline, select Go live if the control is available. If you rely on auto-start, check the event’s stream settings to confirm it is enabled. YouTube also documents auto-stop controls there.

The precise meaning of “connected” in OBS’s status display is not established by YouTube’s guidance. The practical distinction is that OBS reports on its encoder connection, while YouTube’s event workflow has its own preview and live-start state.
2. If there is no preview, verify OBS’s destination and key

In Live Control Room, open the settings for the intended stream and note its server URL and current stream key.

In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Check that the service and server/destination match the stream in YouTube, and replace the key with the current key if it differs. OBS labels can vary by version or configuration, so compare the actual destination and key rather than relying on a particular service preset name.

Apply the settings and start streaming again, then return to the correct Live Control Room event and allow time for its preview to appear.

A YouTube stream key directs the encoder to a stream and authorizes YouTube to accept its feed. YouTube calls stream keys “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that stream. If you reset the key in YouTube, update the encoder with the new one. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
3. Use YouTube’s health message to choose the next check
Once a preview appears, look at the Live Control Room stream-health indicator and any attached error message before changing OBS settings. YouTube says the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check for errors in the stream being sent. The message is more useful than making several encoding changes at once.

No preview: Recheck the selected event, OBS destination/server URL, current key, and whether OBS is sending to that destination.

Preview but event offline: Complete the scheduled event’s Go live step, unless auto-start is enabled.

Preview with a health error: Follow the specific message. If it identifies format, compare the encoder output with YouTube’s stated requirements.

Preview is visible but the picture or sound is poor, or the feed drops: Check the source routed into OBS, encoder errors and CPU load, and the strength of the outbound internet connection.
For format-related errors, YouTube’s error reference identifies video that is not H.264 or audio that is not AAC as a format mismatch. It also lists a keyframe-frequency mismatch between primary and backup streams. Those are targeted checks, not universal fixes for an event that simply says offline. 4. If the feed is unhealthy, isolate the encoder, source, and connection

Update OBS to a current version, then check for encoder errors and high CPU load while streaming.

Inspect the video and audio sources routed into OBS. A bad source or routing choice can make the feed look or sound poor even when the encoder is sending it.

If the local output looks and sounds healthy but YouTube reports interruptions or poor delivery, test the outbound connection. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend bandwidth headroom; its guidance suggests leaving 20% headroom, without assigning a publication year to that recommendation. Avoid treating that figure as proof of a fault without checking actual upload conditions.

After the event starts, check its channel or watch page as a viewer and confirm that the intended stream is accessible. Keep the Live Control Room open to monitor health during the broadcast. A preview in the control room is useful evidence that YouTube is receiving the feed, but the viewer-facing page is the final check that the event is available to its intended audience. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend checking access through the channel and watch pages.

6. Troubleshooting by symptom

If the checks do not resolve the issue, YouTube’s guidance provides a report-a-problem route. For problems involving signing in to YouTube through third-party software without a stream key, it directs users to the relevant software support team; that is a different setup from the stream-key workflow above. The YouTube troubleshooting guidance was accessed October 3, 2026, and the cited help pages do not display publication dates.
