Start with YouTube’s published ingest settings, then test the exact resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and network connection you plan to use. For an always-on channel, 720p30 or 1080p30 are sensible profiles to evaluate before trying higher frame rates or resolutions.
Recommended YouTube Live settings to test first
Use the settings below as a starting point, not a guarantee that every mini PC can encode them. YouTube automatically transcodes an ingested stream into viewer output formats; your encoder still has to deliver a stable feed to YouTube.
- Protocol: RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends it for encrypted transport.
- Video codec: H.264 is a broadly available starting choice. H.265/HEVC or AV1 are options only if your encoder and mini PC support them well at sustained load.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps.
- SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit.
- Resolution and frame rate: Use automatic detection by default. If you deliberately want to pin the ingest resolution, use a custom key with manual settings.
These values and options come from YouTube’s encoder settings guide. A two-second keyframe interval is the recommended setting, not a special requirement for 24/7 broadcasts.
What bitrate should I use for a 24/7 YouTube live stream?
Choose the recommended value for your ingest profile and codec from YouTube’s table. The figures below are YouTube’s published recommended ingest bitrates, not mini-PC performance measurements.

| Ingest profile | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
For a low-power machine, start by testing 720p30 or 1080p30 rather than assuming it can hold a higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate profile. Pick a profile that fits the content: 1080p30 provides more detail than 720p30, while higher frame rates can better represent fast motion but add encoding and upload demands. Use YouTube’s recommended column rather than its minimum bitrate column when selecting a production target.
How much upload bandwidth do you need?
YouTube says the stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Upload speed—not the download figure in an internet plan—is the relevant measure. Other devices and users can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder, and a connection interruption can break the stream.

- Run an upload-speed test on the actual connection the mini PC will use.
- Repeat it while the household or workplace network is being used normally.
- Choose a bitrate that leaves about 20% capacity beyond the stream. If you send both a primary and backup stream, account for their combined bitrates plus 20% headroom.
- Prefer wired Ethernet as a practical reliability measure when available; YouTube’s guidance does not make it a requirement.
See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for its bandwidth and backup-stream advice.
Configure and test the stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio options. Use the matching YouTube recommended bitrate for your codec and profile.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the preview appears and that the stream is healthy before going live.
- Test with audio and movement similar to what the actual broadcast will contain. Check playback on the channel or watch page and on a mobile device, and listen for audio problems.
- If you record locally, check that the archive file is growing and has enough storage space.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain stream URL and key setup. Its live-streaming tips cover previewing, checking playback, monitoring quality, and verifying local recording.

Can a mini PC run a YouTube stream all day?
Possibly, but YouTube’s encoder guidance does not certify any mini PC for continuous operation or specify a safe temperature, power draw, or CPU/GPU requirement. Suitability depends on the model, codec, frame rate, cooling, ambient temperature, and encoder settings. A low-power designation is not proof that the device can sustain your chosen profile.
Before relying on the machine unattended, run the intended settings for an extended period. Watch for stable temperatures, thermal throttling, dropped frames, audio or video defects, and adequate free space if recording locally. Also test whether the encoder and network recover cleanly after a restart or interruption. Check model-specific specifications for hardware-encoding support, cooling, network connectivity, noise, power use, and warranty rather than assuming all mini PCs behave alike.

Plan for stream health and interruptions
Live Control Room shows stream health and status, specific error messages, duration, and real-time audience measures. During an unattended broadcast, arrange a way to review health and respond to a network, encoder, or power interruption. YouTube’s cited setup and troubleshooting guidance does not guarantee automatic recovery, so test the recovery path you intend to depend on.
- No preview or stream connection: Check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and current key, then confirm that the selected protocol and connection are available.
- Unstable health or dropped frames: Compare the encoder bitrate with actual upload capacity under normal network use. Reduce the profile or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, and check for network interruptions.
- Stuttering, overheating, or encoder overload: Confirm the selected hardware encoder is supported and active. Test a less demanding profile, such as 720p30, and check whether temperatures or throttling change.
- Missing or faulty audio: Check the encoder’s audio source and format, then verify the sound in the preview and on the watch page.
- Key no longer works: If it may have been exposed or reset, copy the current key from YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in the encoder.
- Local recording is absent or stops growing: Check the recording destination, available storage, and whether the encoder is configured to record locally.
What happens to the recording after 12 hours?
YouTube’s encoder guide states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” It does not promise that one stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be fully archived as a complete VOD. If a complete recording matters, record locally and verify the file is growing and intact, or divide the programming into shorter sessions with a deliberate transition. Do not assume a continuous 24-hour broadcast will become one complete YouTube archive.

Choose latency and DVR settings for the audience
YouTube explains that lower latency can increase playback buffering. When the stream is ambient or informational and you do not need to interact with viewers, minimum delay may matter less than stable playback. DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during the broadcast, which can be useful for viewers joining partway through.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube rather than stream a live camera or encode on a mini PC, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not camera footage. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans, or start the free first day.
