AWS vs. Google Cloud for a 24/7 4K 60fps YouTube Live Channel

AWS and Google Cloud can support managed live workflows, but neither is automatically necessary for a YouTube-only 24/7 4K60 channel. Compare the documented roles, bitrate limits, continuity needs, and real cost assumptions before choosing.

For a YouTube-only channel, first check whether you need AWS or Google Cloud at all. YouTube accepts a compatible live feed and transcodes it for viewers, so a cloud encoding stack may add cost and operational work without helping if your encoder can already deliver a stable 4K60 feed. If you need managed transcoding, multiple output formats, or a cloud-based workflow, Google Cloud documents a managed live-streaming path; AWS documents a broader encoding, packaging, and CDN reference architecture. Neither vendor’s published examples establish a like-for-like price or a guaranteed 24/7 solution for this exact channel.

Start with the workflow, not the cloud vendor

There are two different designs that are easy to confuse:

  • Encoder straight to YouTube: Your encoder sends a compatible feed to YouTube. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live video into formats for viewers. If YouTube is the only destination and the feed is stable, adding a cloud media stack is optional, not a prerequisite.
  • Cloud ingest and processing: A cloud service receives a feed, processes or packages it, and sends output onward. This can make sense when you need managed transcoding, controlled failover, or distribution beyond YouTube—but it adds services and configuration to operate.

For a channel that only needs one live feed on YouTube, compare the cloud designs against the simpler direct-encoder path before committing to either provider.

What each option actually does

Option Documented role Fit for a YouTube-only channel
Direct encoder to YouTube YouTube receives the live feed and transcodes it for viewers. YouTube Help recommends RTMPS and says to test the feed and monitor stream health. Often the simplest design when one compatible, stable feed is all you need.
Google Cloud Live Stream API Managed ingest and transcoding into multiple renditions, with live outputs such as HLS or DASH. A channel can attach primary and backup inputs. Consider it when you need cloud-side processing or outputs beyond a direct YouTube feed. Input and output are separate workflow legs; the cloud’s recommended input protocol is not automatically the protocol used to publish to YouTube.
AWS reference workflow AWS Elemental MediaLive ingests two feeds and creates adaptive-bitrate HLS output; MediaPackage packages HLS, DASH, and CMAF; CloudFront serves the distribution. The reference includes redundant inputs. A plausible managed distribution workflow, but the documented design does not establish that every component is needed for YouTube publishing.

The services are not identical substitutes: Google’s cited service is managed ingest and transcoding, while the AWS reference includes a CDN distribution stage. Choose by the output and recovery requirements you actually have, not by assuming both diagrams solve the same problem.

Can Google Cloud handle a 4K60 profile?

Google Cloud documents Live Stream API UHD input up to 2160p at 60fps and 50 Mbps. Its documented UHD output limit is 2160p at 60fps and 25 Mbps. Google Cloud’s best-practices guidance recommends H.264 at 50 Mbps for 2160p60 input and 25 Mbps for 2160p50/60 output. These are different points in the cloud workflow: the output limit is not a statement about the maximum quality YouTube will accept.

YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 4K/2160p60 is 35 Mbps. Its listed AV1/H.265 range for that profile is 10–40 Mbps. YouTube supports up to 60fps and recommends RTMPS. Do not treat Google’s 50 Mbps input recommendation, its 25 Mbps output limit, and YouTube’s 35 Mbps H.264 ingest recommendation as conflicting numbers; they describe separate legs or endpoints.

For Google Cloud processing, verify that the configured output codec, frame rate, resolution, and bitrate fit YouTube’s current ingest guidance. Google Cloud best practices recommend SRT for an encoder-to-cloud input when supported, citing packet recovery, forward error correction, multiple audio elementary streams, and higher bandwidth advantages over RTMP. That does not replace YouTube’s RTMPS guidance: a processed workflow has a cloud input leg and a separate YouTube output leg.

What AWS’s documented architecture means for this use case

AWS’s reference uses MediaLive for ingest and encoding, MediaPackage for packaging, and CloudFront for delivery. It describes redundant inputs and outputs in HLS, DASH, and CMAF. That architecture can address managed processing and distribution needs, especially where there are multiple delivery formats or an audience served through a CDN.

It does not establish that a YouTube-only 24/7 channel needs the entire stack. If YouTube is the sole viewer destination, its own ingest and transcoding may already cover viewer-facing formats. The AWS reference also does not certify uninterrupted 24/7 operation for this particular YouTube workflow; availability depends on the full configuration and tested recovery design.

Plan continuity around failure and restarts

A continuous channel needs more than a valid 4K60 profile: it needs a way to detect a stopped or unhealthy feed and resume publishing. Google’s quota documentation says a Live Stream API channel that remains in an active state for 24 hours may be restarted. Design for that lifecycle with monitoring and automated recovery, and test the restart-and-resume behavior rather than treating one active session as a perpetual process.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Google Cloud supports primary and backup inputs, and AWS’s cited reference uses redundant feeds. Redundant inputs can help address source-feed failure, but neither fact alone proves zero interruption or guarantees recovery of the complete path to YouTube. Define the interruption you can tolerate and test the failure cases that matter: source loss, cloud processing failure, output publishing failure, and planned 24-hour restart handling where applicable.

How to compare the real cost

There is no supported blanket winner on price. The published examples do not compare a 24/7 4K60 YouTube channel on equivalent assumptions, and the services have different roles.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • AWS example: AWS’s planning guide estimates approximately $69.74 for encoding, packaging, and distribution for a one-hour event with about 1,000 viewers using its SD-540p profile. The documentation page does not state a year. This is an example under that guide’s assumptions, not a forecast for 4K60 or 24/7 operation. Its separate example involving about 10,000 viewers uses HD-1080p for one hour, not a 4K60 continuous channel.
  • Google Cloud billing basis: Google says Live Stream API pricing varies by input and output resolution and is based on how long each channel remains active. It specifies a ten-minute minimum charge and rounds active durations up to the nearest minute after that. An exact bill depends on the relevant region, number of inputs, output renditions, and active hours.

Before estimating either design, use the same assumptions: direct encoder versus cloud ingest; YouTube-only versus additional destinations; codec, resolution, bitrate, and rendition count; primary and backup inputs; active hours; region; expected audience traffic and CDN egress; and the monitoring and recovery work you will operate. Check current regional service rates and availability before deployment. A one-hour SD or HD event estimate cannot be reliably extrapolated into a 24/7 4K60 quote.

A practical decision

  • Choose direct encoder-to-YouTube as the baseline if YouTube is the only destination and your encoder can deliver a stable compatible feed. YouTube’s ingest settings are the relevant publishing target.
  • Evaluate Google Cloud if you specifically need managed ingest/transcoding or HLS/DASH outputs, and can accommodate its documented UHD output bitrate limit and 24-hour active-channel restart lifecycle.
  • Evaluate the AWS reference stack if your design calls for the MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront roles—particularly managed processing and distribution. Do not add the full stack solely because the channel is always on.
  • Do not choose on an assumed cost or reliability winner. Build a matched regional estimate and test the failure and recovery behavior for the actual workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud
