Army Commanders are non-combat units that group nearby forces for faster movement, help deploy them near the front, and provide promotion bonuses to units within their command radius. Use one to reposition and coordinate an army—not as a unit expected to fight on its own.
What does an Army Commander do?
The Civilization VII game manual describes Commanders as “a special type of unit that are non-combatant.” Their job is to support other military units: pack nearby forces together to move as a group, then deploy them near the front. The official combat developer diary says packed units benefit from movement bonuses.
A commander also earns experience and promotions through nearby combat. Some promotion effects benefit units within the commander’s range stat, which defines its command radius. When the commander is selected, the community guide says the radius is highlighted; units outside it do not receive its promotion effects.
How to use Army Commanders
- Select the commander and check its highlighted range. Keep the units that need its promotion bonuses inside that radius; use the in-game display rather than assuming every nearby unit qualifies.
- Pack units to reposition. Move forces as a group when you need to bring them toward the front without issuing separate movement orders to each unit.
- Deploy near the target before fighting. Packing helps with coordinated travel, but units need to be deployed to take part in combat.
- Use a group attack when it suits the situation. The official combat diary describes group attack orders with special combat bonuses, as well as commander actions such as healing, repair, and beginning fortification construction. A player-authored Steam guide describes coordinated assault and focus fire as ways to concentrate eligible melee or ranged attacks on one target; treat that as community strategy, not a guaranteed rule for every unit or build.
- Check the current tooltip before committing. Promotion effects and edge cases can vary by commander and game version, so rely on the in-game description for the exact effect in your save.
How does commander XP work?
The official combat developer diary says commanders gain experience and promotions through nearby combat. Promotions can improve units within command radius, but the supplied official description does not establish a universal XP threshold or a complete current promotion table. Check the commander’s in-game interface to see its available promotions and requirements.

Which Army Commander promotion theme should you choose?
The official diary describes broad themes for Army Commander promotions. Use the immediate need of your army to guide a choice; the documented themes do not establish one best build for every game.
| Theme | General emphasis | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Assault | Attack bonuses | When your plan depends on applying more pressure in combat. |
| Bastion | Defensive bonuses | When holding ground or protecting forces is the priority. |
| Maneuver | Movement bonuses | When repositioning and reaching the front matter most. |
| Logistics | Operational bonuses, including army size | When managing the size or organization of your force is the concern. |
| Leadership | Commander-focused effects | When you want effects centered on the commander. |
These are high-level descriptions, not exact effect text. Promotion names, prerequisites, and numerical bonuses should be verified in the current tooltip.

How do unique commanders change the rules?
Commander details can depend on civilization, game version, and when a save began. For example, the official July 22, 2025 patch notes document Trung Nhi, Trung Trac’s unique Army Commander. The notes say Trung Nhi is awarded in the first Age alongside Trung Trac’s first military unit, and that she, her abilities, promotions, and appearance persist across later Ages. Her separate promotion tree includes effects involving terrain, friendly territory, adjacent enemies, coordinated attacks and focus fire, fortified districts, and commander defense.
Those patch notes provide a dated example of civilization-specific variation, not a promise that every listed effect is unchanged in the newest build. The official game site search result surfaced Update 1.2.5 notes dated September 30, 2026, but commander-specific details were not available in the retrieved page text. For the precise effect in a current game, use its tooltip.
