For an H.264 1080p, 25 fps YouTube Live stream, start with 1920×1080 progressive video, constant bitrate (CBR), a 50-frame GOP for a two-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo audio, and RTMPS. YouTube does not publish a separate H.264 bitrate recommendation for 1080p25; its closest listed reference is 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Treat that as a starting point to test—not a 25 fps requirement—and verify the actual connection and stream health from the place you will broadcast in India.

FFmpeg command for 1080p at 25 fps

This illustrative command sends an existing video file at its intended playback rate and encodes it as H.264 with AAC stereo audio:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=25,format=yuv420p"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
  -b:v 14M -minrate 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
  -g 50 -keyint_min 50 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmps://<ingest-host>/<stream-key>'

This is a template, not a tested command or a guarantee of stream quality. Replace INPUT with your media file and use the RTMPS server URL and stream key displayed in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private. Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes libx264 and supports RTMPS; available encoders and options vary by build. FFmpeg documents its command and encoder options at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html.

What the key settings do

  • -re reads a file at its intended playback rate. Do not blindly add it to a live capture input, which should follow its real-time input behavior.
  • The filter scales the picture to fit within 1920×1080, pads it to that canvas without changing its aspect ratio, sets 25 fps, and outputs 8-bit 4:2:0 video. If your source already has the correct dimensions, aspect ratio, and frame rate, remove unnecessary conversions to avoid extra processing.
  • -b:v, -minrate, and -maxrate set a 14 Mbps target with a constrained rate range. The bitrate is based on YouTube’s 1080p30 recommendation, because its current live table has no 1080p25 row.
  • -g 50 sets a 50-frame GOP; at 25 fps, that is one keyframe every two seconds. -keyint_min 50 and -sc_threshold 0 help keep keyframes on that interval rather than inserting them early for scene changes.
  • -bufsize 28M is an example encoder buffer setting, not a buffer size prescribed by YouTube.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 selects AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.

Settings YouTube recommends

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (and says not to exceed four seconds), and RTMPS where supported. For 25 fps, two seconds equals 50 frames. Its advanced H.264 recommendations include progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 SDR, and 8-bit SDR. AAC or MP3 audio are supported; YouTube’s advanced stereo settings specify 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Listed resolution and frame rate Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate How it applies to 1080p25
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps Nearest listed reference; not a specific 1080p25 recommendation
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps Different frame rate; not a 1080p25 target

Use 14 Mbps as a working starting point, then test representative motion and detail. YouTube’s upload recommendations describe a different workflow and should not be substituted for live ingest guidance. Sustained upload capacity needs to support the stream; if delivery is unstable, lower the bitrate or resolution and check stream health.

Set up and test from your India connection

  1. Check your FFmpeg build. Confirm it has the encoder you plan to use, such as libx264, and RTMPS support. Build options differ, so a command that works on one installation may fail on another.
  2. Get the ingest details. Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for your stream. Enter them in the command’s output URL and do not share the key. See YouTube’s Live Control Room guidance.
  3. Measure and test the actual uplink. YouTube recommends an upload speed test and a full pre-event test. Test at the event location and on the connection you will use; there is no single India-wide bitrate or ingest route established by YouTube’s guidance.
  4. Use representative content. Test with audio and motion similar to the real stream, and confirm encoding speed stays at or above real time. Watch YouTube’s stream health messages during the test and while live.
  5. Adjust based on the result. If the encoder cannot sustain 25 fps, reduce its workload or use an encoding option your hardware can maintain. If YouTube reports sustained delivery problems, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again.

YouTube defines latency as the delay from capture to playback and notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. Choose a latency setting with that trade-off in mind; a low-latency choice does not fix inadequate upload capacity.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
FFmpeg reports that libx264 is unavailable The local build does not include that encoder. Use an FFmpeg build with libx264, or select an encoder available in your build and verify its options.
Connection fails or YouTube does not receive the stream Incorrect ingest URL or key, or missing RTMPS support. Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check the key for transcription errors, and confirm RTMPS support in your FFmpeg build.
Stream health shows unstable delivery The available uplink may not sustain the configured bitrate or route reliably. Test from the event location; reduce bitrate or resolution if delivery problems persist.
Video looks stretched or has unexpected bars The source aspect ratio differs from the output canvas, or scaling and padding are unsuitable for the content. Check the source dimensions and aspect ratio. The example preserves the ratio and pads the remaining canvas; adapt or omit conversion if the source already matches.
Encoding falls behind playback The encoder cannot process frames fast enough, or filters add too much work. Check that speed stays at or above real time; remove unnecessary filters or use an encoding setup the computer can sustain.
Playback buffers more after choosing lower latency YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering. Choose a latency setting that balances delay and playback stability.

Copyright and live-stream eligibility

Use media you own or have permission to stream, including music, gameplay footage, and any other audio or video in the program. Encoding settings do not grant streaming rights or prevent copyright claims. Check YouTube’s current rules and account requirements before scheduling a broadcast; eligibility and enforcement can depend on the account and content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg process on a computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed. The computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
