To broadcast a radio station on YouTube with an audio-reactive visual, send your station audio and a visualizer from the same OBS scene to YouTube Live. Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, add its server URL and stream key to OBS, configure a stable video profile, test the preview, and then go live. The visualizer is optional software; a microphone is not required for music-only playback.
1. Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. 2. Create an encoder stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live.
- In the Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream details. If OBS offers a connect-account workflow, you can use that instead of manually entering the key.
The stream key directs the encoder feed to the right YouTube stream; treat it like a password. If it is exposed or compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset it. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions · YouTube’s stream-key guidance
3. Build the OBS scene around the station feed
- Add the station program output as an audio source in OBS. Choose the exact device or input carrying the broadcast mix, and confirm its meter moves when the station audio plays.
- Add a visualizer source, then position and size it so it remains visible in the full video frame. Keep important text and motion away from the edges, where player controls or different screen crops may obscure them.
- Check that the visualizer listens to the same program audio being sent to YouTube. A visualizer reacting to a microphone or desktop audio instead of the station feed can look active locally while not matching the broadcast.
- Use OBS’s audio mixer to ensure the station is audible and that an unused microphone or desktop source is not unintentionally mixed in.
One option is Waveform, an OBS plugin that visualizes an audio source. Its listing describes frequency-spectrum graphs, bar and circular forms, meters, and waveform display. The listing reports version 1.9.1, an update dated July 14, 2026, support for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and a minimum OBS version of 27.0.0. Compatibility and update details can change, so check the listing against your operating system and installed OBS version before installing.

4. Choose a stream profile that your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion. Match the bitrate to the video codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not universal settings for every codec.

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. For stereo audio, its guidance lists 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. Use the recommendation for your selected codec and profile rather than copying an H.264 figure to another codec. Measure your available upload speed under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total stream bitrate; account for audio and any other upload activity as well as the video. A wired connection can reduce variables, but the key requirement is sustained bandwidth with headroom. For a mostly static radio visual, choose a resolution and frame rate the connection can hold steadily rather than maximizing settings without a practical need.
5. Test, go live, monitor, and end cleanly
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the Live Control Room preview.
- Check the preview for the intended visualizer, correct station audio, balanced levels, and any unexpected sources. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement before a broadcast.
- Watch the test from another device so you can confirm what viewers receive, not just what appears in the OBS canvas.
- When the preview and stream health are satisfactory, click Go live in the Live Control Room.
- Monitor stream health during the broadcast. At the end, click End stream in YouTube and stop sending content from OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube’s livestream workflow and archiving guidance
Microphone: optional, not a music-stream requirement
For a music-only station feed, a microphone is not necessary. Add one only if you plan to record station identifications, live announcements, or commentary. YouTube lists a microphone among equipment that can connect to an encoder, while also noting that expensive equipment is not required to get started. Music rights are separate from the technical setup
A working stream key, an audio visualizer, or artist credits do not establish permission to broadcast a recording. The technical setup guidance does not determine whether a specific catalog, recording, territory, or continuous radio-style broadcast is cleared. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the music and intended use before streaming. YouTube copyright guidance
Troubleshooting common problems
- YouTube receives no signal: Confirm OBS is streaming, the server URL and key match the selected Live Control Room stream, and the key has not been reset. If exposed, reset it rather than continuing to use a compromised key.
- The preview appears, but there is no station audio: Check the selected OBS audio source, its mixer meter, and whether the station output is reaching that device. Make sure the source is not muted and test from another device.
- The visualizer is flat or reacts to the wrong sound: Verify its selected audio source is the station program feed, not an inactive input, microphone, or unrelated desktop audio. Test with the actual station audio before going live.
- The stream buffers or loses stability: Reduce resolution, frame rate, or video bitrate, then retest. Check sustained upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom beyond total stream bitrate.
- The plugin does not appear or load: Check the current Waveform listing for operating-system and OBS-version compatibility, confirm installation for the correct OBS environment, and retest before scheduling a public stream.
- You are unsure what viewers see: Check the Live Control Room preview and watch the test stream on a separate device before clicking Go live.
