Choose the right kind of broadcast
A finished video can appear on YouTube in two different ways. A Premiere plays a video already uploaded to YouTube at a scheduled time, with chat alongside it. Best free choice for one scheduled video: YouTube Premiere
Use Premiere when the goal is simply to have an uploaded video begin at a selected time and give viewers a live chat experience. It needs no separate encoder software and is described as free in the reviewed comparison. It is not an encoder-fed YouTube Live stream, so choose it only if that distinction suits your event.
- Upload the finished video to your YouTube channel.
- In YouTube Studio, set it up as a Premiere and choose the date and time you want it to play.
- Share the Premiere watch page with viewers. YouTube plays the uploaded video at the scheduled time; no local OBS session is started by the schedule.
Premiere is a poor fit if you specifically need an encoder-fed live broadcast, want to loop the video continuously, or need playback to continue as a live feed after a local operator has left.

Best free encoder software: OBS Studio
YouTube’s official encoder software directory describes OBS Studio as open-source software for video recording and live streaming at no charge. OBS gives you a hands-on encoder workflow, but it does not by itself provide managed cloud scheduling: the computer running OBS must remain powered on and connected for the broadcast. Prepare the channel and video
- Confirm that your channel is eligible to live stream. LiveReacting’s guide, published June 28, 2026, says channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days are required, and that first activation can take up to 24 hours. These rules can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements before relying on them.
- Have a finished video file available on the computer that will run OBS. Test playback and audio before scheduling the event.
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and obtain its stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
Send the prerecorded file through OBS
- Install and open OBS Studio, then add the video as a media source in a scene. Configure the source to restart when it becomes active if you intend to replay it; verify the actual playback and ending behavior in a private test before going public.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Do not publish or share the key.
- Open Settings > Output and choose streaming settings appropriate to your upload connection and the resolution you intend to send. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for supported resolution, bitrate, and keyframe requirements; the sources available for this article do not establish one universal set of numeric settings for every resolution and connection.
- Keep the computer awake, OBS open, the media source playing, and the internet connection stable for the whole broadcast. Start streaming in OBS and confirm that YouTube Studio receives the feed before directing viewers to the live watch page.
- When the video ends, stop the stream in OBS and verify the broadcast has ended in YouTube Studio. Do not assume that a scheduled YouTube event will launch OBS or restart a stopped encoder automatically.
Browser scheduling: StreamYard, with plan limits to verify
StreamYard’s help page documents a workflow for scheduling a stream to destinations including YouTube and choosing either Studio or Pre-recorded video as the source. Its documentation confirms the route, but does not establish whether this feature is included on the current free plan or specify the applicable file and duration limits.
