To stream a video file from a Mac to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, use its server URL and stream key as FFmpeg’s output, and read the file at real-time speed. For a dependable starting point, encode SDR H.264 video with AAC stereo audio, a constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health before and during the broadcast.
Before you start
- A Mac with an FFmpeg build that includes the encoders and protocol you plan to use. The right build depends on the command; a particular installation method or package build is not established here.
- A video file you are entitled to broadcast. Check the file’s video and audio codecs, frame rate, resolution, and audio tracks before choosing settings.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live, and a live stream prepared in YouTube Studio.
- A reliable upload connection with enough sustained capacity for the chosen bitrate. Leave headroom rather than planning to use all available upload bandwidth.
Keep the stream key private: treat it like a password. Do not put a real key in a public article, shared script, screenshot, or log. The placeholder below is not a usable key.
Prepare the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- In the stream settings, copy the server URL (ingestion endpoint) and stream key. Use the endpoint and protocol YouTube provides for that stream; do not assume an endpoint from an unofficial example.
- Keep the event’s privacy, scheduling, and ending settings appropriate to your broadcast. Confirm in Studio how you want the event to end when you stop sending video.
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers. Use RTMPS when it is offered for your stream and supported by your FFmpeg build.
Choose streamcopy or transcoding
FFmpeg’s -i option identifies an input file, and the output is a destination URL. Many options apply to the next input or output, so their position in the command matters. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Streamcopy (-c copy) |
The source’s audio and video codecs, timestamps, frame rate, and streams are compatible with the selected output muxer and YouTube ingestion. | It avoids decoding and re-encoding, so it is fast and does not add re-encoding quality loss. It cannot apply filters or resize the video, and incompatible streams may fail or be rejected. |
| Transcoding | You need to convert codecs, resize, filter, or control the output format and bitrate. | It offers more format control, but uses CPU and re-encoding can affect quality. Confirm your FFmpeg build includes the encoder you select. |
For a first attempt, transcoding to H.264 video and AAC audio is a practical compatibility-oriented choice. It is not a guarantee that every source file or Mac can process the selected settings in real time.
Choose output settings for YouTube
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, and constant-bitrate encoding. For a straightforward SDR setup, use H.264 and AAC. YouTube recommends Rec. 709, 8-bit color for SDR. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.

| Output choice | YouTube guidance | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | Choose a target your connection can sustain steadily. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise of quality or uninterrupted delivery. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps recommended | Use AAC stereo in the example command below. |
| Keyframes | 2-second interval recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | At 30 fps, a two-second GOP is about 60 frames. |
These figures come from YouTube Help’s current encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026; the page does not state a publication year. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and its recommended bitrate guidance. Match resolution and frame rate to the source where practical, and choose a bitrate suited to the stable upload capacity rather than simply maximizing quality.
Inspect the file, then start FFmpeg
Before selecting streamcopy or transcoding, inspect the file’s stream information with a media-inspection tool or FFmpeg. Look for the video codec, dimensions, frame rate, audio codec, sample rate, and number of audio tracks. If the file has multiple tracks or an unsupported codec, you may need explicit stream selection or conversion; the example below assumes one video stream and one audio stream.

Replace /path/to/video.mp4, YOUR_SERVER_URL, and YOUR_PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY with your own values. Keep the real key private. This encode-oriented example assumes an FFmpeg build with libx264, AAC encoding, FLV muxing, and RTMPS protocol support; adjust it for the file, endpoint, and build you actually have.
ffmpeg -re -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "YOUR_SERVER_URL/YOUR_PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY"
Here, -re is placed before the input so FFmpeg reads the file at approximately real-time pace instead of sending it as fast as it can. The 8 Mbps video target is an example within YouTube’s published 1080p30 range, not a universal recommendation: use a suitable value for your actual resolution, frame rate, source, and connection. At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a roughly two-second GOP. If your source is not 30 fps, adjust the GOP to approximately twice its frame rate for a two-second interval.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Options such as -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize control the video rate behavior; the example is intended to provide a steady output, but confirm the resulting stream in YouTube Studio. If the source is not SDR or the output appears incorrectly colored, revisit the pixel format and color settings rather than assuming a conversion is correct.

Streamcopy succeeds only when the streams and timestamps work with the chosen muxer and destination. If it errors, produces no audio, or YouTube does not accept the feed, transcode the incompatible stream or select the intended tracks explicitly. FFmpeg documents that streamcopy cannot filter and that options are order-sensitive; see the official FFmpeg documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the preview and monitor the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg and watch its terminal output for connection errors, encoder failures, or repeated reconnects. Do not share output that could reveal the key.
- Wait for YouTube Studio to show the incoming stream and preview. Check that video is moving and that audio is present; a static frame or silent source can conceal a problem.
- Confirm YouTube reports stream health acceptable for the event before relying on the feed. YouTube advises testing beforehand with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then monitoring stream-health messages during the broadcast.
- Keep an eye on FFmpeg and Studio while the event is live. When finished, stop FFmpeg cleanly and confirm the event’s ending behavior in Studio.
YouTube’s encoder guidance puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect | Incorrect server URL or key, unsupported protocol, network issue, or an FFmpeg build without the required protocol support. | Copy the endpoint and key again from the correct YouTube stream settings. Check RTMPS support in the build and use the protocol provided by Studio. Keep the key private while diagnosing. |
| YouTube receives a feed but shows an error or no preview | Incompatible codec, muxing, stream selection, timestamps, or output settings. | Inspect the source streams. Try transcoding to H.264 and AAC, and check that the output uses the expected endpoint and muxer. |
| Video arrives but audio is missing | The file may lack an audio stream, contain multiple tracks, or use an incompatible audio codec or track selection. | Inspect the audio streams and select the intended track or encode it as AAC stereo. |
| Stream health warns of unstable delivery | The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or other network activity may be competing for capacity. | Lower the bitrate or resolution, reduce competing upload traffic, and test again before the event. YouTube recommends checking upload bitrate and choosing quality appropriate to a reliable connection. |
| FFmpeg reports that an encoder is unavailable | The installed build may not include the selected encoder. | Use a build with the required encoder and protocol support, or choose settings supported by the build. The exact Mac installation method depends on the build and is not specified here. |
| The event ends differently than expected | Stopping FFmpeg and ending the YouTube event are separate parts of the workflow. | Check the live event’s settings and confirm its ending behavior in Studio before broadcast. |
