Use a YouTube Premiere when you want viewers to gather for a scheduled showing of a finished upload, with reminders and chat. Use OBS Studio when you need to produce a live encoder stream—perhaps combining the video with commentary, overlays, or other scenes. A Premiere is simpler for a shared watch event; OBS offers more production control and requires more setup.
What is the difference?
| Question | YouTube Premiere | OBS Studio to YouTube Live |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Publishes an uploaded video as a scheduled, communal viewing event. | Sends a live, composed output from OBS to YouTube; a prerecorded file can be one source in a scene. |
| Viewer experience | A public watch page, countdown, reminders, and chat. Viewers can rewind, but cannot skip ahead of the point currently being shown. | A live-stream watch page and live chat. A scheduled stream can be promoted as upcoming. |
| Production control | Limited to YouTube’s upload and Premiere options; the video is uploaded in advance. | Control over scenes, media sources, overlays, audio, and live presentation, with more setup and monitoring. |
| After the event | The video remains as a regular upload, and chat replay is available. | YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the current archive and visibility settings. |
YouTube describes Premieres as a way for creators and viewers to watch a new video together in real time. The two options serve different purposes: a Premiere is an upload release feature, while OBS is production software for sending a live encoder output.
Choose Premiere for a scheduled shared viewing
If the video is finished and your main goal is to bring viewers together at a specific time, a Premiere is usually the more direct choice. You upload the video to YouTube Studio, select Premiere, and publish the scheduled watch page. Viewers can visit beforehand, set reminders, and chat during the showing. They can rewind, but cannot jump past the current playback point.
Set up a Premiere
- Upload the finished video in YouTube Studio and enter its title, description, thumbnail, audience, and visibility details.
- Choose to schedule the video and select the Premiere option. You can also set an instant Premiere if you do not need an advance schedule.
- Choose countdown settings if desired, then schedule or publish. The scheduled page is public, so you can share it and viewers can set reminders.
- During the event, join the chat if you want to participate. YouTube describes moderation options including keyword blocking and slow mode, and notes that third-party chatbot support is available.
YouTube recommends scheduling at least 24 hours in advance to give audiences around the world a chance to see the thumbnail in their subscriptions feed. That is platform guidance, not a measured promise of increased views.

Check Premiere compatibility
YouTube Help currently lists Shorts, 360/VR180 video, and output greater than 1080p as unsupported for Premieres. Check the options shown in your current Studio account before planning an event; availability and account access can change.
Choose OBS when you need a produced live output
OBS fits when the prerecorded video is only one part of the broadcast—for example, when you want to switch between it and a host, display graphics, or use multiple scenes. It gives you control over the live composition, but you must configure the encoder connection and monitor the stream.

Add a prerecorded video in OBS
- Create or select a scene in OBS and add a Media Source.
- Select the video file. OBS documentation lists common video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM; supported formats can depend on your system and software version.
- Set the Media Source options you need. Enable looping if it should repeat, or configure it to restart playback when the source becomes active.
- Check the scene’s video and audio before broadcasting. Test representative motion and sound, then verify that OBS output matches your intended stream format.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream and open its Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s streaming connection settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Use RTMPS if available, as YouTube recommends it for encoder streaming.
- Start streaming in OBS. In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives the preview and check stream health.
- When ready for viewers, click Go live in Live Control Room for a scheduled encoder stream.
- Keep OBS and the connection running while the broadcast is on, and monitor the preview and stream health during the event.
YouTube recommends testing before an encoder broadcast. Choose resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and other output settings for your actual video, equipment, and connection, and consult YouTube’s current guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every format. The account’s current live-stream eligibility and Studio options also matter.
Make the choice based on the event
- Finished video, scheduled group viewing: Premiere. It provides an advance page, reminders, and shared chat without requiring an encoder setup.
- Video plus live hosting or scene changes: OBS. Use it when you need to combine the file with other sources or make production choices during the broadcast.
- Finished upload, no need for a shared event: Publish it as a regular video instead. A Premiere adds a scheduled event experience; OBS adds a live production workflow.
Neither workflow is documented as universally better for reach, retention, reliability, or revenue. Choose for the viewer experience and production control you actually need.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before uploading or streaming, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for every video, music track, image, and other material. A scheduled event or encoder stream does not remove copyright responsibilities. Also review YouTube’s current policies and your channel’s live-stream eligibility in Studio; access and enforcement can depend on the account and can change. Do not assume that material is safe to use merely because it is prerecorded or because you are adding commentary.
Troubleshooting the common failure points
- Premiere is not available: Check the video format and resolution against current Premiere support, then check the options and eligibility shown in your Studio account.
- Viewers cannot find the scheduled page: Confirm the video’s visibility and schedule in Studio, then share the public watch-page link. Viewers can set reminders from that page.
- OBS has no video or audio from the file: Confirm the correct file is selected and that the Media Source is active in the scene. Test playback and audio in OBS before starting the YouTube stream.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm the encoder is running, and inspect Live Control Room for a preview and stream-health messages. If the key was exposed, reset it.
- The preview works but the event is not live to viewers: For a scheduled encoder stream, starting OBS is not the final step. Confirm the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live when ready.
- Playback quality or stability is poor: Test with representative video and audio, then review resolution, frame rate, bitrate, hardware load, and connection against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. There is no single setting that fits every setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving a computer and encoder running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
