First identify whether you are using Media Source or VLC Video, then check the playlist order and the source’s visibility behavior. These are OBS playback issues; YouTube’s stream-segment playlist is a different thing.
First, identify what OBS is playing
OBS has two built-in sources that can look like playlist options but serve different purposes:
- Media Source plays an individual media file and has a Loop option. Use it when one video should repeat.
- VLC Video supports a playlist, with separate Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist settings. Use it for multiple media items. VLC must be installed; OBS’s guide specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
The OBS Project’s Media Sources guide, dated January 11, 2022, describes VLC Video as allowing a playlist of items, “similar to an Image Slideshow.”
Check the likely causes in this order
1. Shuffle is changing the expected order
With Shuffle Playlist enabled, OBS randomizes the media files rather than playing them in list order. A title that seems to have been skipped may simply occur later in the randomized sequence. Turn Shuffle off if you need a predictable order. Enable Loop Playlist if the list should start again after its last item.

2. The source stops when it is hidden
By default, VLC Video’s visibility behavior is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If you switch scenes or toggle the source’s eye icon, OBS can stop playback while the source is hidden and restart it when it reappears. That restart can look like a skipped item or a broken playlist.
If playback should retain its place or keep advancing in the background, change the VLC Video source’s visibility behavior to pause/unpause or always play. The available behavior names and controls may vary by OBS version. This concerns the media source, not whether the outgoing YouTube broadcast has ended.

3. A playlist entry may not play correctly
Check the file path and filename for each suspect entry, then try playing that file directly in VLC. If playback repeatedly stops at the same entry, inspect VLC diagnostics and try a smaller playlist of known-good files. A 2019 OBS forum reply suggested checking VLC’s messages for a file error in one user’s large shuffled playlist; that is a troubleshooting lead, not proof of a universal cause.
4. VLC may be missing or the wrong architecture
If VLC Video is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly, confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. The OBS guide specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.

5. Editing the playlist during a live session may affect playback
An OBS forum user reported that adding an item during an active YouTube Live session reset playback to the first video. That single report does not establish that live edits always reset playback, or that they do so in every current configuration. Test playlist edits before relying on them during a public broadcast.
Match the setting to the playback you want

Why YouTube’s playlist is not the cause
Here, “playlist” means the media items OBS plays into the broadcast. YouTube’s HLS documentation uses “playlist” for a rolling list of stream segments used for delivery. That HLS playlist is not the list of local videos in an OBS VLC Video source, so changing OBS’s media rotation is a different troubleshooting task from changing YouTube’s stream-ingestion settings.

A quick troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm whether the source is Media Source or VLC Video. Use VLC Video for multiple items.
- Turn Shuffle off if the videos must play in a fixed order; check Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat.
- Check whether a scene switch or eye-icon toggle hides the source. Change its visibility behavior if playback should pause, resume, or continue rather than stop and restart.
- Verify the paths and filenames, play suspect files directly in VLC, and test a smaller list of known-good files.
- Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture.
- Test playlist changes before making them during a public broadcast.

Does turning off Shuffle make VLC Video play every file in order?
It makes the playlist order predictable, but a file that cannot be accessed or played may still interrupt playback.

Will OBS keep the YouTube broadcast live if a media source restarts?
A source stopping or restarting is separate from stopping the outgoing live stream; it affects the media source’s playback.
