You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream with OBS on a Mac mini by sending a continuous encoder feed to YouTube Live, but the setup is only as dependable as the Mac mini’s sustained performance, your internet upload, power and stream management. Enable YouTube Live first, test the intended OBS scene and settings for an extended period, and plan how you will handle power or network interruptions and recordings.
What you need for a continuous stream
The Mac mini runs OBS, which encodes your video and sends it to YouTube Live. For a stream to stay online, OBS must remain running, the Mac mini must stay powered, and the internet connection must sustain the outgoing feed. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing upload capacity and monitoring stream health; a fast connection on a speed-test screen alone does not establish that a particular stream will remain stable.
- A Mac mini capable of handling the resolution, frame rate, encoder and OBS scene you plan to use.
- OBS on macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later, with an Intel or Apple Silicon processor. OBS cautions that meeting its baseline requirements does not guarantee a given workload will work: OBS system requirements.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
- A reliable, sustained internet upload connection. Use wired Ethernet where practical, but remember that a local Ethernet link cannot fix an ISP outage or inadequate upstream capacity.
- Power continuity for the Mac mini and, if you want the internet to survive a local outage, the relevant router and ONT or modem as well.
Apple’s India specifications for its currently listed Mac mini family include Ethernet and hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW encoding. Check the specifications for the exact model you own or are considering, because family specifications change with releases: Apple Support India: Mac mini technical specifications.
Enable YouTube Live and connect OBS
- Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and follow the prompts to create or enable a live stream. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the planned launch time.
- Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream you intend OBS to send. YouTube’s instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key; if configuring a custom server, use the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it in a screenshot, description or public chat.
- Build the scene and test it privately or unlisted. Add the sources you actually intend to use, including representative audio and motion. Confirm that the video is visible, audio meters move as expected, and YouTube’s preview receives the feed before making the stream public.
- Start the broadcast and monitor YouTube’s stream health. OBS sending data is not by itself proof that viewers are receiving a healthy stream. Check the Live Control Room for warnings or dropped input and watch the OBS status indicators during the test.
Choose OBS settings from the connection you actually have
There is no single bitrate that is right for every Indian broadband connection or every video. Choose resolution and frame rate for the program, then use YouTube’s current encoder guidance to select the corresponding bitrate. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (and says not to exceed four seconds), and RTMPS. Its guidance also says to test upload bitrate with a speed test: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Upload headroom: Judge the connection by sustained upload performance, not just the advertised plan rate. Test at the time and over the route you expect to stream, and leave room for normal variation and other household or studio traffic.
- Resolution and frame rate: Higher output settings require more upload capacity and can increase encoding workload. Start conservatively if you have not tested this exact Mac mini, OBS scene and connection together.
- Encoder and scene: The chosen encoder, overlays, filters, scaling and source complexity all affect performance. Apple’s hardware-accelerated encoding support is useful context, not a guarantee that every scene will run smoothly.
- Keyframes and rate control: Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval in OBS, following YouTube’s recommendation. Use RTMPS where the configured YouTube server supports it.
Test with representative audio and motion for an extended period. Inspect OBS for dropped or lagged frames and check YouTube’s stream health while the test runs. If the feed becomes unstable, reduce the output demand or simplify the scene, then test again; do not assume YouTube transcoding can repair an unstable source feed.
Keep the Mac mini and network online
For a practical 24/7 installation, connect the Mac mini to the router or switch by Ethernet when your network permits. A wired path avoids relying on Wi-Fi between the computer and local network, but it cannot prevent ISP-side congestion, upstream failure or an outage.

A UPS can provide ride-through for the Mac mini and network equipment, but size it for the combined real load and the runtime you need. Include the router and ONT or modem if the connection must continue during a local power interruption. A UPS protecting only the Mac mini will not keep an unpowered ISP device online.
Apple lists 155 W maximum continuous power for the currently specified Mac mini family. That is a maximum specification, not a measurement of OBS power draw and not a valid standalone estimate of UPS runtime. Use the actual equipment load and the UPS manufacturer’s runtime information for sizing.

Plan OBS recovery, YouTube sessions and recordings
OBS and YouTube do not make a home setup immune to interruption. Keep an eye on OBS and YouTube stream health, and decide who will respond if the Mac mini, network or power fails. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance describes managing the encoder stream in Studio: YouTube encoder stream instructions.
YouTube states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast is longer than that threshold, so do not rely on the live stream automatically producing one complete recording. Decide separately whether you need local recordings, shorter scheduled sessions or another archive workflow, and verify the result for your own channel and stream.

Check copyright and reused-content risks
Before leaving a stream unattended, make sure you have the rights to every video, music track and other included material. A continuous stream does not make copyrighted material permissible, and an OBS setup does not prevent claims, blocks or other YouTube enforcement. Review YouTube’s policies and permissions for your specific content; do not assume that material being available online, or having streamed before without a claim, is cleared for continued use.
Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live is unavailable when you are ready | First-time live activation may still be pending. | Enable live streaming in advance; YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. |
| YouTube preview does not receive the OBS feed | Stream URL, stream key, selected service or network connection. | Compare OBS settings with the current encoder details in YouTube Studio, check the connection, and regenerate or replace a key if it may have been exposed. |
| OBS shows dropped or lagged frames, or YouTube reports poor stream health | Insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity, encoding load, or scene complexity. | Check the sustained upload path, lower the output demand or simplify the scene, and repeat a representative extended test. |
| The stream stops during a power cut | The Mac mini or one of the required network devices lost power. | Protect the complete equipment path you need—computer, router and ONT/modem—with a UPS sized for its combined load and desired runtime. |
| The stream ends but there is no complete archive | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition for streams under 12 hours. | Use an explicit recording and archive plan rather than treating a 24/7 live session as a guaranteed complete VOD. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube stream to continue without keeping a Mac mini, OBS or home internet connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
