Reduce that delivery load by choosing a compatible codec, testing a lower bitrate and mono output where it suits the audio, avoiding unnecessary transcoding, and pricing the VPS against your actual listener-hours and transfer terms. The right setting depends on how the stream sounds and which players your audience uses; there is no universally cheapest server size.
Understand which traffic you are paying for
A typical internet-radio setup has two traffic legs: an encoder or generator sends one continuous source feed to a media server, then that server sends the stream to each listener. Liquidsoap’s internet-radio overview describes this generator-to-server-to-player arrangement: Liquidsoap’s internet-radio toolchain.
- Source feed: It continues whether or not anyone is listening. Lowering its bitrate can reduce this leg’s traffic, but it does not eliminate it.
- Listener delivery: With ordinary unicast delivery, the server sends a copy to each listener. Outbound traffic therefore grows with the number of listeners and the time they listen.
For cost planning, use your encoded stream rate and expected listener-hours. As a rough payload estimate, a continuous stream at R kilobits per second sends about R × 0.45 megabytes per listener-hour, before protocol and container overhead. Multiply by listener-hours, then account for overhead and the provider’s precise transfer accounting. This is an estimate, not a provider bill calculation.
Lower the stream rate without damaging the listening experience
Choose a codec your audience can actually play
MP3 is the compatibility-oriented starting point. Liquidsoap’s encoding documentation says modern browsers support Opus and Vorbis, which can provide good quality at lower bitrates, but that does not establish support in every app, smart speaker, or other player: Liquidsoap encoding formats. Check the actual clients your listeners use before switching codecs, and provide a fallback if your setup supports it.

Test bitrate and mono versus stereo
Bitrate and channel count are direct encoding controls. A lower bitrate reduces the stream’s payload traffic; mono can reduce it further compared with stereo at the same codec and bitrate. The trade-off is audible quality and spatial presentation. For relaxation audio, stereo ambience may be part of the experience, so compare on representative headphones and speakers rather than assuming mono is acceptable.
Liquidsoap’s transcoding cookbook gives 32 kbps mono MP3 and 128 kbps MP3 as configuration examples. Treat 32 kbps mono as a test point, not a universal recommendation for music or ambience: Liquidsoap transcoding cookbook. Test a few settings against the stream you currently deliver, including quieter passages and detailed ambient sounds. Confirm that the result plays in your supported clients before making it the live output.

Keep conversions to a minimum
Encoding and decoding can use substantial CPU. If the source is already in the format you intend to deliver, avoid decoding and re-encoding it merely by habit. Where mixing, resampling, or transcoding is necessary, measure CPU with the real stream running steadily and during playlist changes; a smaller transfer bill is not a saving if the VPS cannot encode reliably. Estimate monthly egress before changing VPS plans
- Record the actual output settings. Note codec, bitrate, channel count, and whether the server sends one copy per listener.
- Estimate listener-hours. For example, 10 listeners each listening for 5 hours produce 50 listener-hours. This is an assumption for the calculation, not a prediction of your audience.
- Estimate payload traffic. Multiply listener-hours by the stream’s approximate megabytes per listener-hour, then add a margin for protocol and container overhead.
- Check the exact billing terms. Compare that estimate with the VPS plan’s included transfer and overage rules, plus any separate media-server or CDN charges. Include the base fee and the operational work needed to keep the stream running.
- Compare scenarios. Model your current stream and each tested lower-bitrate or mono option using the same listener-hours and geography assumptions. Recheck current provider terms before purchase.
The VPS sticker price alone can mislead: the included transfer allowance and cost of additional delivery traffic may matter more than the base fee. Billing also varies by provider and service. For example, Cloudflare says bandwidth is included in its plans while Argo data transfer is metered separately; the terms are specific to those services, not a universal rule for VPS providers: Cloudflare billing: How charges accrue. Choose the setup by measuring the whole workload
Compare configurations using the same listener demand and geographic assumptions. A lower stream bitrate can reduce delivery traffic, but the best choice also depends on sound quality, codec compatibility, CPU load, and how you recover from interruptions. Without your expected concurrent listeners, listener geography, quality target, uptime needs, and candidate providers’ current prices and transfer allowances, a single cheapest VPS plan cannot be established.
- Audio quality: Does lower bitrate or mono preserve the texture and stereo space your relaxation stream is meant to deliver?
- Compatibility: Do the browsers, apps, speakers, and other players in your audience accept the codec and container?
- Delivery cost: What are expected listener-hours, transfer allowance, overage price, and any separate delivery-service charges?
- Compute: Can the VPS handle the actual decode, mix, resample, and encode work without sustained overload?
- Continuity: What restart and recovery process is needed if the encoder, server, or network connection fails?
Do not mistake a video pricing model for an audio-radio alternative
Cloudflare Stream’s pricing page, last updated September 8, 2026, lists video delivery at $1 per 1,000 minutes and says bandwidth is included in video delivery: Cloudflare Stream pricing. Those are video-service terms, not evidence that Stream can replace an Icecast-style audio radio service or lower the cost of this audio-only setup. Compare managed delivery only where the provider documents support for your required audio workflow.
