Set up a small set of clearly named OBS scenes, assign a distinct hotkey to each, and rehearse every transition before streaming. Use Studio Mode when you want to preview a scene before viewers see it. For an overnight broadcast, test the complete setup for longer than a few minutes and arrange a way to monitor it: OBS scene switching helps manage what viewers see, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted all-night stream.
Plan the scenes your ASMR stream actually needs
An OBS scene is a layout made from sources such as a camera, image, text or media file. Start with the visual moments you expect during the broadcast rather than building a long list of scenes without a clear purpose. For example, an ASMR stream might use an opening slate, a main close-up or tabletop view, an alternate visual, a brief break scene and an ending slate. These are examples, not required presets.
Create each scene in the Scenes dock and give it a purpose-specific name. Add the sources it needs, then check their order: sources higher in the list can appear over sources below them. Confirm visibility is enabled for the sources you want viewers to see, and that overlays do not obscure the focal image. Set up dependable scene switching with hotkeys
- Open Settings → Hotkeys in OBS.
- Find the hotkey action for switching to a specific scene and assign a distinct key or key combination to each scene.
- Choose controls that are easy to remember and unlikely to be pressed accidentally. Avoid assigning the same combination to multiple scenes.
- Apply the settings, then rehearse the full scene sequence while watching the preview. Confirm each key activates the intended scene.
Hotkeys are built into OBS, so basic scene switching does not require a plugin or dedicated control hardware. They are a good fit when you will be present to operate the stream; they do not switch scenes on their own if nobody presses them. The OBS guide covers hotkeys in its overview of OBS Studio.

Choose a transition and preview it safely
OBS includes Cut and Fade transitions by default, and lets you adjust transition duration. Use a cut for an immediate change or a fade when a softer visual change suits the stream. Pick a restrained transition that fits the quiet viewing experience you want; an elaborate effect is not automatically an improvement.
To prepare a scene without showing your in-progress changes to viewers, turn on Studio Mode. Set up the next scene in the edit area, check the composition, then select Transition when it is ready to go live. Rehearse this extra step alongside your hotkeys so you do not mistake a previewed scene for the live one. OBS documents Studio Mode and transitions in its Overview Guide.

Check microphone and media playback
Verify the microphone
Choose the intended microphone in OBS audio settings and speak or make a test sound. Confirm that the correct channel’s Audio Mixer meter responds. Meter movement confirms a signal is reaching OBS, but does not establish that the sound is clean or at a suitable level. Listen to a local recording or private test where possible, and be cautious with filters: processing can alter subtle ASMR sounds. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking selected devices and testing before a first broadcast.
Check any media source
If a scene uses audio in a Media Source, check its playback settings. OBS supports audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Review whether Loop is enabled and whether playback should restart when the source becomes active or the file should close while inactive. Test the behavior by switching away from and back to the scene; do not assume a file will restart or continue in the way you intend. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.

Decide whether you need automation or physical controls

Conditional automation with Advanced Scene Switcher
Advanced Scene Switcher is an OBS plugin for condition-and-action automation. Its OBS forum listing, updated August 7, 2026, reports version 1.36.1 and a minimum OBS Studio version of 31.1.1. Check the current listing against your installed OBS version and platform before relying on it, and back up your OBS settings before changing a working setup. Plugin compatibility can change; OBS outlines the general caveats in its Plugins Guide.
Dedicated buttons are optional
OBS’s plugin guide names Elgato Stream Deck as an example of hardware some plugins let OBS communicate with. Consider it only if physical controls would make your workflow easier, and check current model and plugin compatibility. You do not need a Stream Deck to use OBS scene hotkeys.

Test the whole sequence before an overnight broadcast
- Switch through every scene and verify the right camera, overlays, text and media are visible.
- Check for blank scenes, hidden sources or overlays that cover the main image.
- Test each cut, fade and Studio Mode transition you plan to use.
- Confirm the microphone meter responds, then listen to a short recording or private test rather than relying on the meter alone.
- Test any looping media and its behavior when you switch scenes.
- Run a longer private or unlisted rehearsal under conditions similar to the planned broadcast, and arrange an appropriate way to monitor the stream.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes before a first stream or recording. A short test can catch setup problems, but cannot establish that a computer, plugin combination or streaming platform will stay uninterrupted all night. Treat overnight operation as something to validate and monitor, not a guarantee of scene-switching settings.

A hotkey does nothing or selects the wrong scene
- Reopen Settings → Hotkeys and confirm the key is assigned to the intended scene.
- Check for duplicate or conflicting combinations, then apply changes and rehearse again.
- Make sure you are watching the live output rather than only a prepared scene in Studio Mode; use Transition when the preview is ready.
A scene looks blank or an overlay hides the subject
- Check the source visibility controls in that scene.
- Inspect source order and move the focal camera or image above sources that should sit behind it, or move overlays so they do not cover important detail.
- Verify that the scene contains the intended sources rather than assuming another scene’s layout applies.
The microphone meter does not respond
- Check that OBS has the intended microphone selected in its audio settings.
- Make a test sound and watch the correct Audio Mixer channel.
- If the meter responds but the recording sounds wrong, listen back and investigate the captured audio; meter activity alone does not confirm sound quality.
Media audio fails to loop or restart as expected
- Open the Media Source properties and check Loop and the options for restarting playback when active or closing the file while inactive.
- Switch away and back during rehearsal to confirm the behavior you want.
- Check that the file uses a supported audio format, such as MP3, AAC, OGG or WAV.
A plugin or control device stops working after an update
Check the plugin’s current compatibility information against your OBS version and platform. The Advanced Scene Switcher listing specifies a minimum OBS version, but compatibility details may change. If the plugin is not working reliably, return to the built-in hotkeys while you troubleshoot; basic scene switching does not depend on the plugin.
