What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a spare Intel PC, start with OBS’s Intel Quick Sync H.264 encoder, a constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Set bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then test the actual scene and connection in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on the setup. Quick Sync availability and stream stability depend on the PC, graphics configuration, drivers, OBS build, and upload connection.
Recommended starting settings
For ordinary SDR gameplay or other live video, H.264 is a practical Quick Sync starting point. YouTube’s live guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use the following H.264 bitrate recommendations as starting targets, not guarantees of picture quality or connection stability. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| Output | YouTube H.264 recommendation | Minimum listed by YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the game and the available upload capacity. A 60 fps target is useful when motion clarity matters, but it requires more bitrate than 30 fps at 1080p. The listed minimum is not a recommended target for every scene: fast gameplay, complex scenes, or variable network performance can make a stream less reliable or less clear.
Core encoder values
- Encoder: Intel Quick Sync H.264, if available in OBS.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube gives a maximum interval of 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: Select the value for your resolution and frame rate from the table, then confirm your connection can sustain it.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 are supported by YouTube. Its recommended advanced audio setting is stereo AAC at 128 Kbps.
YouTube’s recommended advanced H.264 settings also include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR. OBS’s available controls and labels can differ by version and encoder, so use these values when the corresponding options are exposed rather than assuming every QSV interface offers identical controls.

Check that the spare PC can use Quick Sync
Quick Sync uses Intel processor graphics, not simply the fact that the computer has an Intel CPU. OBS’s documented compatibility guidance says QSV is supported on Windows and Linux with Intel HD Graphics on Core-i generation 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) or newer; OBS recommends generation 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because early QSV versions had lower quality. This is a compatibility baseline, not a guarantee that a particular older PC will produce satisfactory output. OBS: Hardware Encoding.
Intel says Quick Sync is available only when processor graphics are enabled. If a discrete graphics card is installed and the iGPU has been disabled, QSV may not be available. Intel: Quick Sync Video and processor graphics.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Check the processor model and generation; do not infer QSV capability from the PC’s age or branding alone.
- Make sure Intel processor graphics are enabled in the system firmware, especially if the PC also has a discrete GPU.
- Install an appropriate Intel graphics driver, then reopen OBS and check whether an Intel Quick Sync encoder is selectable.
Hardware encoding moves encoding work to a specialized graphics component and can reduce CPU impact, but older hardware encoders may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding. That trade-off does not establish how a specific spare PC will perform; test it with the game and scene you intend to stream.
Configure and test OBS with YouTube
- Enable processor graphics and install the driver. Confirm that Intel processor graphics are enabled in firmware and that the Intel graphics driver is installed. Restart the PC if the driver installation requires it.
- Select the Quick Sync encoder in OBS. In OBS’s output/streaming encoder controls, select an Intel Quick Sync H.264 option if one appears. Exact menu labels vary by OBS build and platform; if QSV is absent, revisit the hardware and driver checks above.
- Set the stream output. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the H.264 bitrate matching your intended resolution and frame rate. Configure audio with a supported codec; YouTube recommends stereo AAC at 128 Kbps.
- Connect OBS to YouTube securely. Use YouTube’s stream setup and an RTMPS ingest option where available. Treat the stream key as a credential: enter it only in OBS or the relevant trusted encoder, and do not publish or share it.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Use the game, motion, overlays, and audio that resemble the real broadcast. Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and correct warnings before the event. YouTube specifically advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. YouTube’s live encoder guidance and YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
How to choose a stable resolution and bitrate
Start by measuring upload capacity at the location and time you will stream, preferably over the same wired or wireless connection you will use during the broadcast. Leave headroom rather than planning to consume the full measured upload rate: other devices, network variation, and bitrate overhead can interrupt delivery. The table values are YouTube recommendations, not a substitute for a connection test.

If the 1080p60 target is unstable, test 1080p30 or 720p60 at the corresponding YouTube bitrate. Compare the result using the same gameplay and scene complexity; a static menu is not a useful stand-in for fast gameplay. There is no universally best resolution for an unspecified PC and network.
Troubleshooting common Quick Sync problems
- Quick Sync does not appear in OBS: Verify the processor graphics are enabled in firmware, particularly when a separate GPU is installed. Install or update the Intel graphics driver, restart OBS, and check encoder availability again. Confirm the processor/graphics generation against OBS’s documented guidance.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames: Check whether upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate during the actual stream. Test a lower resolution or frame rate using its matching bitrate recommendation, and avoid competing uploads or other heavy network use during the test.
- The stream connects but motion looks poor: Confirm that the selected bitrate matches the chosen resolution and frame rate, and that CBR and the two-second keyframe interval are set. Test representative fast gameplay; YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommendations, not a guarantee for every scene.
- Encoding overload or high CPU use: Verify OBS is actually using QSV rather than a software encoder. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU work, but the overall game, scene, driver, and encoder combination still needs a realistic test.
- Audio is missing or unhealthy: Confirm OBS is capturing the intended audio source and is using AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends stereo AAC at 128 Kbps; check audio during the private or unlisted rehearsal.
Copyright and gameplay considerations
Using an encoder does not grant rights to the game, soundtrack, cutscenes, or other material in a broadcast. Check the relevant rights and YouTube policies for the content you plan to stream, and remove or replace music you are not licensed to use. A test broadcast is also a chance to catch audio sources that may include music or other material you did not intend to include. Avoid assuming that gameplay footage is automatically cleared for every use.
