1. Check the prerecorded video file
Restream’s requirements for pre-recorded videos, published April 22, 2026, list these mandatory source-file settings:
- Container: MP4, MOV, M4V, or MKV.
- Video encoding: H.264.
- Audio codec: AAC.
- Keyframe setting: 2.
Check the file you are actually sending, rather than relying on the export preset’s name. If it uses a different container or codec, create a compliant test encode and try that file. Restream describes its conversion tool as a way to turn an unsupported format into MP4; converting the container alone does not guarantee a fix if the video encoding or other settings remain incompatible.
Optional source-file recommendations
Restream recommends 1080p (1920×1080), 30 or 60 FPS, and constant bitrate (CBR) for prerecorded video where supported. These are recommendations, not mandatory upload conditions. If your file meets the required settings but the problem continues, check whether its resolution, frame rate, and bitrate mode suit your workflow.

Restream also recommends leaving 15–20 seconds at both the beginning and end of the video so platforms have time to process the incoming stream without cutting into critical content. Treat this as a content-buffer recommendation, not a black-screen diagnosis.
2. Check the outgoing YouTube stream settings
The source file and the live feed sent to YouTube are separate parts of the workflow. Restream’s YouTube streaming guide, published July 9, 2026, lists these YouTube settings:

- Resolution: 240p–2160p.
- Frame rate: up to 60 FPS.
- Bitrate mode: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended, with 4 seconds as the maximum.
Bitrate depends on the resolution and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate value that can be recommended for every stream from these facts alone. Compare the encoder or streaming workflow’s output settings with YouTube’s requirements rather than changing bitrate at random.
3. Test privately or unlisted on YouTube
Run a private or unlisted test broadcast and inspect the event on YouTube while it is streaming. Restream documents this as a way to check how a broadcast connects to and appears on its destination platform: How to test your stream before going live.

Note whether the picture is black on YouTube and whether audio is present. If possible, compare the test with the source file playing locally, then with a direct YouTube stream. These comparisons help narrow down where the symptom occurs, but they are practical checks—not a formally validated diagnostic protocol or proof of a particular cause.
4. If the broadcast will not start or appear, check the YouTube connection
If YouTube is not receiving or displaying the broadcast at all, follow Restream’s YouTube start troubleshooting steps. Check that the channel is connected and configured appropriately. Restream says to reconnect the YouTube channel and reset its stream key if needed; its guidance also recommends trying a direct YouTube stream without Restream.

These steps address a stream that will not start or reach YouTube. A channel reconnection or key reset should not be treated as a confirmed fix when the stream is already live but only the picture is black.
Check how the YouTube event was created
Restream says events created through the YouTube mobile app are for mobile streaming only and are not supported for streaming through Restream. If you created the event in that app, use an event type supported by the Restream workflow instead.

5. Gather details if the black screen persists
If the checks do not resolve the issue, give Restream support a concise reproduction of what you tried. Include:
- The source file’s container, video codec, audio codec, and keyframe setting.
- The encoder or Restream workflow used to send the prerecorded video.
- The YouTube event type and whether the stream connects successfully.
- Whether audio is audible while the picture is black.
- Whether the same source differs in a private or unlisted test, or in a direct YouTube stream.
