To run a continuous YouTube stream through Restream, authorize your YouTube channel in Restream, create an encoder/RTMP stream with YouTube enabled, then run FFmpeg on a VPS to send your media to Restream’s ingest URL and stream key. The VPS runs the encoder; Restream relays its feed to YouTube. You still need to monitor the process, plan recovery, and account for YouTube’s archive limit.
Before you begin
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. For a channel’s first live stream, YouTube requires phone verification and a 24-hour wait before broadcasting can start, according to Restream’s YouTube setup guide.
- A Restream account and authorization from the YouTube channel owner. Restream says a manager or editor role is not sufficient to add the channel.
- A VPS with enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream, plus the media file or other encoder input. The right instance and transfer plan depend on the source and hosting provider; no universal VPS size follows from the encoder settings alone.
- FFmpeg installed from a maintained package source for the VPS operating system.
This is a continuous feed from an encoder input such as a media file. The VPS must remain available and the encoder process must keep running. Restream is the relay, not the machine that runs FFmpeg.
Set up the Restream and YouTube connection
- Enable YouTube live streaming. Complete YouTube’s channel verification and first-time live enablement flow. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, allow the 24-hour activation wait.
- Authorize the correct channel in Restream. In Restream, open Channels and add YouTube. Choose the Google account and channel you intend to broadcast to, especially if multiple accounts are signed in. Confirm that the authorization is from the channel owner.
- Create an encoder stream. In Restream, choose New Stream, then Encoder | RTMP. Enable YouTube as a destination for that stream.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key. Use the endpoint and key shown for this encoder stream in your VPS encoder configuration. Restream says its key remains static unless reset, but a newly created RTMP stream may have a different key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, or public log.
Prepare the VPS and configure FFmpeg
Check network capacity and access
Restream’s encoder setup guidance recommends at least 10 Mbps upload and 25 Mbps or higher for Full HD. These are Restream recommendations, not a universal VPS sizing rule. Confirm that the provider allows sustained outbound traffic at your chosen bitrate and check its transfer limits, firewall rules, and regional network conditions.
Install FFmpeg using the maintained package source for your chosen operating system. Keep the media input and configuration on the VPS. Restrict access to any file that contains the stream key, and avoid putting the key in a command transcript or other location that may be retained or shared.

Choose RTMP or RTMPS
FFmpeg documents RTMP as a multimedia streaming protocol over TCP/IP and RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. Use the Restream endpoint as provided, choosing RTMPS when an appropriate secure endpoint is available. FFmpeg documents RTMP output through its protocol support; the exact command depends on your input, encoding choices, and endpoint.
A minimal command shape is ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "RTMP_OR_RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY". Replace the input and endpoint placeholders with your own values; do not paste a real stream key into an article, public shell history, or shared terminal recording. This illustrative command assumes 30 FPS for the 60-frame GOP; adjust it to your output frame rate and target settings rather than treating it as a universal preset. If the file is already encoded suitably, you may be able to copy its streams instead of transcoding, but check compatibility and bitrate before relying on that.
Set encoder settings for YouTube
Restream’s YouTube guide lists H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second recommended keyframe interval with a four-second maximum, up to 60 FPS, and resolution-dependent video bitrates. It supports AAC or MP3 audio. The cited guide gives 128 Kbps stereo audio or 384 Kbps 5.1 audio, with sample rates of 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1. Check the current guidance for your chosen destination before implementation.

| Setting | Restream’s stated YouTube guidance | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | Choose H.264 output when encoding with FFmpeg; if copying an existing video stream, verify its codec and compatibility. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use a steady target bitrate rather than allowing large bitrate swings. |
| Keyframes | Two-second interval recommended; four seconds maximum | Set the GOP length to match the output frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 FPS equals two seconds. |
| Frame rate and resolution | Up to 60 FPS; resolutions from 240p through 2160p | Pick a resolution and frame rate your media, encoder, VPS, and available egress can sustain. |
| Video bitrate | 3,000–40,000 Kbps depending on resolution and FPS | Use the value appropriate to the selected output in Restream’s current guide, not the entire range as a single target. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1; 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1 | Match the audio channel layout and sample rate to your source and intended output. |
The example command above is not a recommendation for every resolution. In particular, its illustrative 4,500 Kbps video target and 30 FPS GOP should be checked against Restream’s bitrate guidance for the actual output.

Start the stream and verify the destination
- Start FFmpeg on the VPS with the selected input, encoding settings, Restream endpoint, and protected stream key.
- Open YouTube’s live control room and check that the incoming feed appears and that video and audio are correct.
- Confirm the stream is healthy before treating the setup as unattended. Check that the input is advancing, the encoder is still running, and YouTube is receiving the expected output.
Restream documents RTMP and SRT as supported protocols for encoder streams. This workflow uses the RTMP endpoint and key from the Restream encoder setup; use the protocol and credentials shown in your own stream configuration.
Keep the encoder supervised and plan restarts
Run FFmpeg under a service manager or another process supervisor so you can observe it in logs and relaunch it after a process failure. Exact service-unit configuration depends on the VPS operating system and has not been established here. Test process restart behavior with your actual input, server, and YouTube event before relying on an unattended broadcast.

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation describes options for attempting recovery from temporary output failures, including continuing real-time processing during a temporary network failure. Recovery settings can improve resilience, but do not guarantee seamless reconnection or that YouTube will resume the same event automatically. A process supervisor and FFmpeg recovery are distinct safeguards: one can relaunch a failed process, while the other can attempt to recover a temporary output failure.
Restream warns that server maintenance may restart streams that run for more than 24 hours and suggests a restart every 24 hours. Schedule a controlled restart and verify the resulting YouTube event behavior rather than assuming a restart will be invisible to viewers.

Restream says it has no stream-duration limit, and its YouTube guide says YouTube has no duration limit for a live stream. However, that guide says YouTube archives only streams under 12 hours. If a YouTube VOD is important, plan separate shorter broadcasts or make a separate recording; an always-on live feed is not the same thing as one permanently archived video.

Troubleshooting
My stream doesn’t start on YouTube
- First live stream not enabled yet: complete phone verification and wait through YouTube’s 24-hour first-stream activation period.
- Wrong channel authorized: check the Google account and selected YouTube channel in Restream. Confirm that the owner authorized it.
- Destination not enabled: open the encoder stream in Restream and verify that YouTube is enabled as a destination.
- Wrong or stale credentials: copy the endpoint URL and key for the current RTMP stream. A new Restream RTMP stream may have a different key; reset keys only if needed and update the VPS configuration accordingly.
- Encoder mismatch: check the codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against Restream’s current YouTube guidance. Inspect FFmpeg logs and the YouTube live control room for the point of failure.
The stream drops or the encoder exits
- Inspect FFmpeg output and VPS logs to distinguish an encoder crash from a temporary network or destination failure.
- Confirm that the VPS can sustain the selected outbound bitrate and that provider network or firewall rules permit the connection.
- Use a process supervisor to relaunch a process failure and consider FFmpeg’s FIFO recovery options for temporary output failures. Validate the recovery behavior in a test broadcast; it is not an uptime guarantee.
- Plan a controlled restart at least every 24 hours in light of Restream’s maintenance guidance, and check what happens to the YouTube event when the encoder reconnects.
The live stream is available but there is no YouTube archive
Restream’s current YouTube guide states that only streams under 12 hours are archived. For a required VOD, use shorter broadcast segments or keep a separate recording rather than relying on one continuous event.
Costs and architecture choices
The VPS route requires a hosting plan and the outbound transfer capacity for a continuously running encoder. This research does not establish current VPS prices, provider-specific egress allowances, or a reliable universal instance size. Check those terms with the provider for your selected region and stream settings.
| Architecture | What it does | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| VPS encoder → Restream → YouTube | FFmpeg runs on your VPS, sends a feed to Restream, and Restream relays it to the enabled YouTube destination. | Use the requested route when you want Restream between the encoder and YouTube, including when managing destinations through Restream. |
| VPS encoder → YouTube directly | FFmpeg sends its output to YouTube without the Restream relay. | Consider this simpler destination path if you do not need a relay service. FFmpeg documents RTMP/RTMPS output; confirm the current YouTube ingest settings for your channel. |
The Restream route adds a service dependency and a separate place to manage destination authorization and encoder credentials. A direct route has fewer relay steps, but does not provide Restream’s relay layer. The cited sources do not establish a vendor reliability comparison or current costs for either architecture.
