A Premiere is an uploaded video scheduled in YouTube Studio. FFmpeg can instead send a prerecorded file to YouTube as an encoder-originated live stream. Choose the Premiere workflow for a scheduled watch page; use the FFmpeg workflow when you specifically need the video sent as a live encoder feed.
Choose the right YouTube workflow
| Workflow | Use it when | How it works | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uploaded-video Premiere | You want YouTube’s scheduled Premiere page and shared viewing experience. | Upload the finished video in Studio, schedule it, and select Set as Premiere. | YouTube’s Premiere guidance says Shorts, 360/VR180 video, and output above 1080p are unsupported. YouTube Premiere help. |
| FFmpeg encoder live stream | You want a prerecorded file to play through an encoder-originated live event. | Schedule an encoder event, send its feed using FFmpeg, check the preview, then launch it in Live Control Room. | This is a live stream, not the upload-based Premiere feature. Test your FFmpeg build, source, and ingest before the event. |
If your goal is a real Premiere, follow the first method. FFmpeg is relevant only to the second.
Schedule a true YouTube Premiere
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and upload the finished video.
- Enter the video details.
- Choose Schedule, set the date and time, and select Set as Premiere.
- Share the resulting watch page so viewers can set reminders and join the live chat when the Premiere begins.
- Check the current format limits in YouTube’s Premiere help: Shorts, 360/VR180 video, and output above 1080p are unsupported.
The Premiere plays from the video you uploaded; FFmpeg does not need to run during it.
Send a prerecorded file as an FFmpeg live stream
Set up the YouTube encoder event
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy that event’s Stream URL and Stream key. The key authorizes an encoder to send the feed, so treat it like a password. Use the event’s own details rather than a sample endpoint or a key from another event. YouTube explains stream keys and how to reset one in its stream setup guidance.
- Use the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. Do not substitute an example ingest address. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Run FFmpeg with the event’s URL and key
Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the destination with the RTMPS URL and stream key copied from your event. Keep the key out of shared logs, screenshots, and commands you publish.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is a starting template, not a command verified for every FFmpeg build or input. The -re option reads the file at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), helping the output proceed in real time instead of racing through the file. FFmpeg documents this behavior and real-time output in its command-line documentation and protocol examples.
The example uses H.264 video, AAC audio, and FLV muxing as a practical starting combination. YouTube’s current encoder guidance also lists HEVC and AV1, but use those only if your installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen codec and the event’s ingest mode accepts it. Check YouTube’s supported encoder settings before changing codecs.

Start and end the event in the right order
- Start FFmpeg sufficiently before the scheduled time to allow connection and preview checks.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and inspect both picture and sound.
- When ready, click Go live in Live Control Room. Starting FFmpeg supplies the feed; it does not replace the launch step in YouTube’s scheduled encoder workflow.
- Monitor picture, sound, and stream health while the event is running. YouTube recommends testing beforehand and checking the preview before going live; see its encoder settings and live streaming tips.
- At the end, stop the stream through the event controls and stop FFmpeg. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube’s live stream setup guidance.
Settings to check before streaming
YouTube’s current encoder guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Match settings to the source: Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to suit the actual video and YouTube’s current guidance. Do not copy a high bitrate without checking whether the source and your upload connection can sustain it.
- Use a stable upload connection: The connection must carry the outgoing stream continuously. Test the full setup and check stream health rather than assuming a file that plays locally will stream reliably.
- Verify codecs in your FFmpeg build: The command assumes
libx264is available. FFmpeg builds differ; check the installed encoders and test the exact command and source before the event. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing, but do not establish which encoders a reader’s local build contains. - Protect the stream key: It is event-specific and grants access to send a feed. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s stream key guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
- No preview appears: Confirm FFmpeg is running, the destination uses the URL and key for this exact event, and the URL was copied correctly. Check the FFmpeg output for a connection error before changing encoding settings.
- FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or cannot initialize
libx264: Your build may not include that encoder. Check the build’s available encoders and use a supported option, then test the complete command before the scheduled event. - The stream plays too quickly: Make sure
-reappears before the input option-i. It tells FFmpeg to read at the file’s native rate for real-time output. - Video or audio is missing or unhealthy: Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm the source contains the expected tracks and that the selected codecs are accepted by the event. Test in advance instead of troubleshooting for the first time on air.
- The event has a preview but is not live: For the scheduled encoder workflow, the operator still needs to click Go live in Live Control Room after checking the preview.
- A stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room; do not keep using a key that may no longer be private.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo uploads and loops videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
