If a YouTube stream key will not save or update in Live Control Room, first confirm you selected the right stream and that your channel role allows the action. Then check whether the problem is in Studio, the browser session, or the encoder. YouTube’s Help pages do not identify a browser-specific cause or confirmed browser fix for stream-key save failures, so cache clearing and browser changes are best treated as isolation checks—not guaranteed repairs.
Check the stream and key in Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, choose the intended stream, and open the Stream settings.
- Inspect the Stream key controls. Make sure you are looking at the key for the stream you intend to send to, and use YouTube’s copy or selection controls rather than assuming an older saved value is current. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- If the key may be stale or exposed, use the reset control to generate a new one, then update the encoder that sends to that stream. Resetting rotates the credential: an encoder still configured with the old key will need to be changed.
Check whether your channel role permits a reset
YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. Editors and viewers do not have that permission. If Reset is unavailable, ask an owner or manager to perform the reset; changing browsers will not grant the missing channel permission. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
Try browser checks as diagnostics
These steps can help determine whether a browser session is involved, but YouTube’s general browser guidance does not specifically document them as fixes for a Live Control Room key that will not save.
- Reload Live Control Room, or close and reopen it, then check the stream key controls again.
- Update and restart your browser. Close unnecessary tabs and retry.
- Try Chrome or another supported browser to see whether the symptom changes.
- Restart the device.
- If the problem continues, isolate the browser session by clearing cache and cookies, then sign in again and reopen Studio. YouTube suggests clearing cache and cookies on a general video-error help page; that guidance is not a confirmed diagnosis of stream-key persistence failures. YouTube Help: Fix video playback issues.
Update the encoder and test the connection
A key can appear correct in Studio while an encoder is still using an old value or sending to a different destination. For an encoder startup error involving a stream key, YouTube’s guidance is to retrieve the key from Live Control Room and paste it into the third-party encoder. If the software signs in directly to YouTube and does not use a stream key, YouTube recommends contacting that software’s support team. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream errors.

- In the encoder, open the settings for the YouTube destination that matches the stream selected in Live Control Room.
- Paste the current key from Studio into that destination and save or apply the encoder settings.
- Start sending from the encoder. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room and review stream health before clicking Go live. YouTube recommends testing the stream and checking stream health before an event. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream errors.
Identify which part is failing
| Layer | Check | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio or account | Confirm the selected stream, whether its key is visible or selectable, and whether your role permits a reset. | A wrong stream selection or missing permission can block the action. |
| Browser session | Reload Studio, restart or update the browser, try another browser, or isolate cache and cookies. | If the symptom changes, the session may be involved; this does not establish a confirmed key-save fix. |
| Encoder integration | Paste the current key into the matching destination; determine whether the encoder uses a key or direct account sign-in. | This separates a stale or mismatched encoder setting from an integration or sign-in problem. |
| End-to-end stream | Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview; review stream health. | A preview confirms that a feed is reaching YouTube before you start the public stream. |
When to escalate—and when eligibility is separate
Record the exact failing action: selecting a key, saving stream settings, copying the key, or pasting or accepting it in the encoder. Include your browser and version, channel role, and whether the encoder uses a stream key or direct YouTube sign-in. A Studio-side failure belongs with YouTube Help; an encoder integration or sign-in failure belongs with that software’s support team, consistent with YouTube’s separate key-management and encoder troubleshooting guidance.
Live-stream eligibility is a separate issue from saving a key. YouTube lists channel verification and having no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days among its requirements for live streaming. If you cannot go live even after the encoder feed reaches Studio, check eligibility rather than repeatedly rotating the key. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
